Xone 42 or DJM 600s

Hi guys. First post here.

I think its important to say that I know how to mix properly, but I was mainly a producer for the past 6 years or so. I now want to take DJing more seriously and my budget for the mixer allows me to chose between this 2 (or something in the same price range).

Im gonna use the mixer + decks + traktor scratch pro + midi controller. I will for now use software FX but intend on buying a EFX 500, 1000 or something similar in the future.

At first I was really leaning towards the A&H and didnt even considered the Pioneer. Then I found some negative reviews (such as the one below) and that got me thinking. What is your opinion?
Here are the problems that I didn't really like. Keep in mind...I'm picky.. I hooked it up to my Dynacord speakers...

 1. The cross fader brand new out of the box had static when moving it back and forth. WTF?

 2. You can apply the VCF filters to activated to the cross fader. It didn't seem to work as well as using the rotary dial. Sometimes when using the cross fader filter......the music would go to absolute silence!

 3. On each channel there is an efx knob. The mixer allows for send and return for an effects module to be hook up. I don't have an effects module...so those knobs were wasted for me....

 4. The headphone jack was really close to the headphone volume and cue mix dial. It was awkward.

 5. I thought that the vu lights would light up better.......they kinda just flicker....

 6. There are four channels. Only two of the channels allow for both phono and line. The other two channels only allow for line. So you can only hook up a turntable to channel 1 and 4. Why are these options so limited?

 7. I have big fingers. The cue and filter buttons on each channel are difficult to press. They have a plastic ring around the button that lights up. It was difficult for me to press the buttons on and off. When I returned the mixer, the guy at the store was using a 42 the night before and managed to almost rip off his nail while pressing the button.

 8. The EQ knobs seems very small and tiny.

 9. The box didn't have the extra knobs that it was supposed to come with.

Don't get me wrong...the sound is warm.....and amazing. Total A&H sound. I think that A&H mixers do have the best sound.
Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

You can ALWAYS find some bad reviews about any product that's on the market :) besides the fact that people wanna share their good expiriences with some piece of gear, there are also people that are pain-in-the-as^ and will always find something to hate about what they review.. so why the hell they dont try to make smth better if they know everything, i wonder??? :|

My opinion is Xone.. in this case, comparing to 600 cuz i dont like 600 for a lot of reasons! But also, my even stronger opinion is that you should stop reading reviews and go to some store and try them both out, by yourself.. so you see if this what this guy's mummling in this quote is right or not. Just, try them out.. there's no better review than the one you can do facing both these pieces of gear ;)

as for me, once more - xone! leave this guy.. and his fat fingers  i guess mom didnt like him enough while he was a kid so he writes such wierd things..

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

mixers have come a long way since the 600. the eqs on the 600 are fucking awful, not to mention the muddy flat sound coming out of the box. pioneer didn't get anything right until the 800, and they still haven't figured out eq technology on that one.

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

Im gonna be ordering the gear from the UK so thats part of the reason im so worried. I mean.. i dont want to use it for 3 days and find out I hate it.

But im sure that wont happen. A&H it is then :)

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

just try to find some way to ... well, taste them.. :) what Jenks said about eq knobs being fat and awful for (ab)using is my personal opinion too, just i didn't wanna bring that out cuz we all differ, imo, they're freaking hard to use and that plastic fat thing is yuck! ..but some of my friends love it cuz its that way.. 1more thing i hate about it is having a fader, not a knob.. for master volume.. and 3rd thing is that its not durable, faders crash after a while and i didnt hear that about Xone.

..imho, i like 400 more than 600.. dunno why but i like it more, nevertheless it has less options, its somehow more compact, but not much useful. go for Xone ;)

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

Pioneer is about to do some product updates in August at the DJ Expo and its rumored the 600 maybe on its way out. Personally, I hate the DJM600, its crap compared to the DJM700 and DJM400. A&H Xone will always sound better. A&H put their proven technology from FOH live mixing consoles into their DJ line. I own a Xone 3D, it was one of the first that came out and its had its issues but ultimately A&H fixed it. Nothing comes close to the warm sound of a Xone mixer, nada nil.,,except for the DJM-800...kinda close.

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

I had the 600 and now have the 62 and 92 A&H. If i were you def go A&H. The 600 was good when i first got it years ago but then those effects sound crap and also like was mentioned the eq's are not great on the 600. You also mentioned that you will get a effect unit 500 or 1000 in the future so why not get the 42 A&H now instead of getting the 600 then upgrading both the mixer and the effect unit later? In regards to the effect unit get the kaos pad much better sound quality and effects :)

Xone 42 and Ecler NUO 4 seem to be the most suitable ones for you. BTW the black edition of Xone 42 really rocks in appearance, I agree with scifi pi. :)

Very enthusiastic about it too.

The rockshop has a much bigger price.. and Im pretty sure they are out of stock too. Its not even worth emailing because of the price tho.

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

Thanks Panoulix but as you can see they are out of stock on thomann. I actually emailed them a few days ago and they said they only expect new Xone's for mid August :(

On the other site the price is much higher and not really worth it.

I am a customer of RockShop for a long time. If you find a competitive price available elsewhere and email them, they will try to beat it, so no worries about that. If RockShop was out of stock, they would mention that. I strongly suggest you to take a look.

Just pray it is not an ex-demo unit or a customer return. That's what I'm afraid of when buying the last item in stock...

#1242075Post 24 of 46

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

true...even though a cust. return usually is fine shape-wise, but they shouldn't try to mark it off as "new."

Definitely the better choice; heck I'd get a P500 instead of the 600. 800 is much preferable out of the lot though ;)

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

:(

Still havent received the gear.. hopefully that wont be the case. I already emailed them about that and told them that I will have to return the mixer if its not new.

edit: they just replied and assured me the product is brand new and boxed.

So far im very pleased with djstore.com. After reviewing the products if everything is ok I will recommend them to anyone without a doubt.

Good news then. I will add djstore.com to my list then for trusted DJ Gear websites. So far I am very satisfied with RockShop.de and Thomann and Disque Tu Veux from France. Greek DJ shops SUCK, so I get all of my stuff from abroad ;)

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

Yeah they have a great costumer service. Very helpfull and fast response.

Btw is the crossfader on the Xone good enough to learn how to scratch? I've always wanted to learn that.

#1242302Post 28 of 46

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

All the A&H Mixers carry Penny+Giles faders and xfader, except for the Xone02. You're gonna love it, although I would recommend you to go Ecler, Rane, or Rodec for scratching.

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

hei guys

I got the gear today and everything appears to be working fine.. but I have one doubt about the mixer:

The output LEDs are not affected by the Mix Volume button. They always stay the same and only change if I change the gain of the channels.

Check this video to see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-cP4hKvN-8

So far, Im not using the Mix output (XLR) and only using the Booth output (RCA). But I dont think thats the issue here. What do you guys think? Is this normal?

#1242591Post 30 of 46

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

ok from what I read on the manual the LEDs are not affected by the Mix button. BUT.. why is it that the channel LEDs are at +3 dB for example and the master LED is at 0dB ?

#1242616Post 31 of 46

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

also.. (and sorry for triple posting but I think its more organized this way) is it normal that, when i have no sound input.. but one of the faders is up.. I pickup some radio signal.. very low volume but I ear it.... I guess the cables act like an FM antenna ?

Hello, Regarding postings, a good way to organize different subjects and merging them to one post, is to use quotes for each of the subject. They attract better the attention of the viewers, plus they are smoothly organized ;)

Now, about the mixer. the Master volume LEDs are lit ONLY when you are using the MAster volume level fader/rotary on each mixer. The booth out has no LED levels except if you own a Rodec clubMixer which has more than one separately controlled and volume level LED displayed outs...

Regarding your signal catching problem, try connecting your mixer to the same power socket array that you have the rest of your DJ equipment. BUT be careful to isolate your TV, Satellite Receiver, AV Receiver, Cordless Dect phone devices and so on from this socket multiplier/splitter you have your DJ equippment attached to. This may help you eliminate the problem you have.

Let me know if I can assist you further ;)

Cheers, Panos.

I understand that. Thats not what I asked. My point was that the MIX volume button does not affect the LEDs.. only the output volume of the XLR outputs. The manual says this is normal. It doesnt make sense to me... how do we know how much output are we giving to the XLR outputs?

Also.. and I noticed this on other mixers across youtube.. the master LEDs dont go as high as the channel LEDs. They differ in about 1 or 2dB. I dont know why.

#1242714Post 34 of 46

Re: Xone 42 or DJM 600s

The Master Out of each mixer, has a variable voltage rate output of 2~7V normally. The line channel voltage output that passes through the mixing logical ICs and circuits of each mixer, is significantly less than the one emmited by the Master out. This is why you have different response between the master and the channel fader VU Level LEDs.

Regarding the mixer main outs, all expensive and well designed mixers, have also a TRIM knob in the back side, so that you can adjust the response and amounds of Voltage that the main Outs surpass to the speakers.

As you may also notice, the Channel VU LED meters of the mixers start litting or flashing when there is signal present. So even if your Channel fader is set to 0 (While 0 = no sound and not 0db), signal present will still exist as these VU Meters are Pre-Fader installed. However, GAIN knobs are also Pre-Fader installed and thus, are affecting the Channel Signal Levels by increasing or decreasing it, so this way only you will see significant changes to your Channel Level LED meteres.

Feel free to ask if you have any further questions. ;)

Thanks... no trim knob tho.

Sadly, after a few hours of normal use I already notice the crossfader bleeding sound.. heres a little video of the problem: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OhdHnQ9tuI
