Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

i haven't used beatport in a while, but does that say "restricted" on the right? Are they trying to build up hype or something?

#1232479Post 4 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

nope, it's territorial restrictions, somehow always to the disadvantage of us stupid Europeans. It irritates me, it's like holding the sausage before the dogs mouth with a rod and making him chase it without result.

I do not want to see what I cannot get my hands on.

#1232483Post 5 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

yeah I completely agree with you...its like that for everything not just beatport.

there are plenty of tracks that are territory restricted for canada as well...

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

You're right I guess, but it's just so incredibly annoying.

#1232600Post 8 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

Totally agree with you Yao ... There are so many tracks that I still have not managed to get my hands on due to the restriction bollocks thing

I am not sure what happens with the other digital downloads sites, but I have also seen territory restricted releases on Amazon

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

What does territorial restriction mean?

#1232613Post 10 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

It means the song isn't able to be sold in certain countries, probably due to licencing restrictions with the label it's on.
It means the song isn't able to be sold in certain countries, probably due to licencing restrictions with the label it's on.
I think most of us are aware of that, nevertheless it freaks me out hearing a great track that has not been released for my geographic area -it depends on to which label it is licenced and sometimes you'll see it multiple times in the index, one restriced and another release that I can get my hands on. All too often still, no alternative licencing basically keeping that music away from me unless I resort to alterative options.

Thanks mate ... not familiar with this, I've not encountered it in Singapore or Australia.

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

Really? Do a search for sasha on beatport. For me (sydney) all the tracks that are on the label Ultra are listed as restricted, (but are also available on emfire).

#1232848Post 15 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

That choicetrax link I put up a little while ago would be the fastest way of finding where the tracks are available.

#1232889Post 16 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

beatport is so outdated when it comes to the licensing issues... i mean... territory restrictions? this is the internet, you must be kidding me! snap out of the past...

but instead of having some balls and standing up against their labels they just give in and propagate old cashing models.

i never understood why everyone was flocking to beatport in the first place. there's plenty of other advanced download sites out there... by sucking the music industries balls beatport got all the labels, and today they get all the users, undeserved.

but oh well... yao is so right on this. they don't want our money, why insist on giving it to them? ;)

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

^^^ Because we want to support the artists ???

#1232899Post 18 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

i suppose you'd better give the money directly to the artist then. he'll be only receiving a fraction of what you pay to the music industry anyway.

#1232901Post 19 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

I would love to. !! But seeing I can't why don't we ask the artists if they would prefer we steal their music. Lots of fractions can add up to a sizeable amount. :D Well i can actually by going to their gigs but then I am giving money to some promoter as well !!

I fully understand Yao's frustration and also understand if people can't buy a track that they will download it illegally. What I do object to is the people who use some unavailability as an excuse to download everything illegally .

Btw just for record I hate the way the commercial music industry works and definitely think the artists are ripped off. But that shouldn't be a reason for us to rip them off any further.

#1232902Post 20 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

what i'm saying is: if the music industry can take a big share of the money that people pay for music, i can also expect them to put that money to work. i don't see that happening.

music is about art, so basically the term "music industry" is a contradiction in itself... personally, i'd say it's about time to break down that whole idea. but that's just me ;)

#1232908Post 21 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

Agreed Yao - i'm in the UK and suffer from the same trouble. Seems to be happening more and more as well.

Like you say, usually by the time you realise the track is restricted, you've decided you like it enough to buy it which is always a pisser.. Agreed that if it's not available it shouldn't be shown to you - at the very least these tracks should come up in a different colour or something like that so you know. I know it says "restricted" in the column but that doesn't stand out when you're browsing

#1232909Post 22 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

Glad to see it's not just me going bonkers behind my screen when that happens a few times in a row ;).

I don't download for the sake of downloading, and am all about supporting artists. These territorial restrictions are one of a few possible reasons, though I just realized from someone else's post that I could try and look elsewhere. But in that case the whole principle of easy acquisition is out the door.

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

You aren't allowed to buy an artists track, so you steal it instead? :BSPost:

Note I put commercial in front of music industry :) Would be good to break that down but I certainly don't want the artists to suffer in the process. :)

Btw I used choicetrax to hunt for two tracks tonight for someone else and ended up buying both for myself. The joke was it was so much easier going through them than going through Beatport even though both were on Beatport. :D

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

What is the purpose of restricting tracks to territories? Surely the more people that can buy the track = more $ for everyone involved?

Yes, if that is what it takes for the music industry to modernize itself.

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?
What is the purpose of restricting tracks to territories? Surely the more people that can buy the track = more $ for everyone involved?
it's the old school licensing model that allows label A to get all the cash from e.g. europe, whereas label B gets the money from e.g. US. and therein also lies the big problem: what if label A refuses to release a track to europe? then there's no legal way for users in europe to listen to that track.

so personally, i don't consider it stealing. stealing is taking something without paying. in this exact case i would pay, if not some fucked up licensing model prevented me from doing so.

#1232942Post 29 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

i think its also because of exclusivity issues. they release a track in Europe for instance and its restricted to djs in US so that Europeans (in that example) can get their hands on that track earlier and retain exclusivity on their sets. of course this can happen the other way round too..

it pisses me off aswell but buying your music from other sites and not only beatport is one solution. i remember a similar thread a while back and someone said it all has to do with your IP address. the site you buying your music, recognize your IP and tells which part of the world you live. then it decides if a track is territory restricted for you or not... so if you can shange your ip address or maybe give false delivery address you may confuse the siteand it wont give you the track as t.r

#1232948Post 30 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

how about just buy something else? there are hundreds of thousands of records out there, if you HAVE to have those few tracks to make your set, then you're not a very good or creative dj.

#1232954Post 31 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

That would be succumbing to the industry that is unable to keep in pace with the new possibilities the internet has disclosed. Dear Jenks,it is exactly these kind of things that motivate the music industry to adapt to the new set of circumstances -if corporations were the ones to dictate the tempo of advancement we'd be in deep shit, don't you agree? It has always been the demand that has driven the development in an economy, not the other way around (except for those markets where a demand is created, but that is not the case here).

i'm on there Dhar_2 strangley enough

#1237612Post 33 of 56

Re: Wanna know why I still use Soulseek sometimes?

haven't used Soulseek in ages  found alternatives.

I do agree though: while it's not a MUST HAVE track, to hear something, then absolutely WANT to BUY it legitimately and can't...that's just curtailing some of your clientèle.

Diff. countries though do have diff. rules...so where there's a will there's a way...

Ahem... I'm not sure you know how frustrating it is to hear an killer tune, after searching high and low, only to have Beatport bleep "Territory Restricted." Damn annoying :twisted::twisted::twisted:

i think it's funny that most of those producers and labels there are all from europe. but that is still pretty messed up.
