Re: Swine Flu
i can't believe how big a deal people are making this into. its the flu. it is no worse than any other flu. it is simply a new strain. you should only worry if you are a small child, an old fart or have a weak immune system. otherwise it will run its course. let them create a vaccine. things will be better.

and i hope i'm not proven wrong.....
this

jesus this is ridiculous.. and that shit about Egypt really pisses me off

Re: Swine Flu

funny how we are joking about this especially turning this into the prok thread, but fuck, I have to fly to vegas on Sunday and then when I come back I hope I don't get anything. Not for my safety but more so for my 6month old daughter.
That would be awesome if we did!

I hope you have a great time as well (even though its for work), and I hope you take lots of pics if you can too :)
I wish I could bring my dslr. I will be at a conference and wont get the chances to get out and see the city. That means, it will be on you to get some awesome pics. ;) Get a lot of them. We need some more in the Digital Scribbles section.

This will be my second time there and I have yet to experience Las Vegas. There is so much to see there.

where are you staying?

Re: Swine Flu
Probably so. I'm not suggesting that we need to start freaking out... The odds of survivability are strongly in your favor. I read that epidemiologists estimated the 1918 outbreak at a case fatality rate of less than 2.5%.

There's always something out there waiting to kill us. :)
Yeah. we had an America expert on TV, who probably wrote the article you read by the sound of it  , say 98% of the people who caught the flu in 1918 survived. And also mentioned immune system over reaction. It was the reaction rather than the flu that was killing them. Apparently we can give it to pigs as well !!

#1209194Post 45 of 84

Re: Swine Flu

98% survived, but a million plus died....meaning pretty much every single person got sick with it at some point. That's a scary bug.

Re: Swine Flu

gaaaaaaaaaaaaa

working in the news industry I am sick and fucking tired of hearing about this. Every newscast MUST have a swine flu story, a swine flu spinoff, a local swine flu hit, a swine flu this a swine flu that....fuck last week there was a 6-minute block of swine flu shit. Gee, don't panic the viewing audience TOO much

For fucks sake we interviewed a local/senior hospital doctor tonight and said email your questions in...the idiocy of the questions and amount we had in an hour was ridiculous. People are fucking sheep and morons...yes, I saw and filtered the questions after the fact (since they emailed them into the wrong area)

Of course NOW there are some supposed confirmed cases at a local college which gives us our big local hit on things...boy this will throw some panic into people...

Places are running out of hand sanitizer, Tamiflu, masks, etc. It's the fucking bird flu shit redux again...with only 109(!!!) confirmed cases so far and 1 death (a Mexican toddler) out of what, 300,000,000 people in the US?!?!?

Give me a fucking break. Until I see a pandemic like the 1918 bit that killed 500,000+ Americans this means absolutely nothing...more people get sick and die period from "regular" flu then this crap that has gone about so far.

Bring back those 1976 ads next...then I'll really throw up.

I of course also found out that in Massachusetts the Senate 3 weeks ago passed what amounts into martial law...the House I'm sure will be next then it gets quietly signed by the Governor. Bunch of bullshit.

i saw this game as that shit happen, you could even hear the guy from the Chilean team call him a "Leper" just because the dude was Mexican, the other dude responded with a "oh so im a leper, here you go" all of this in response to all of this influenza crap.

im telling you, me being an Hispanic and living so close to the border with Mexico its just hard as hell to have a normal day, just yesterday i went to the store and while i was in line to pay some groceries, i sneezed(im having the seasonal allergy symptoms) and people just look at you like fuuuuuck!! this guy is gonna kills us all!!!

This will be my first time there, but its my best friends 4th trip. I will be staying at the Flamingo. My friend stays there whenever she goes and we got a really good deal. Where will you be?

#1209659Post 68 of 84

Re: Swine Flu

H1N1 is the type of strain.

TECHNICALLY, it should be called "Mexican flu" since that's where it supposedly originated (and usually anything that turns into a worldwide pandemic or where one is issued gets its name from the country of origin)..

Wouldn't want the US to hurt any trading relationships though

Besides, "swine flu" sounds so newsy...throttle the idiot behind a desk who thought about using it instead....

Even up in Canada when I sneezed the other day I had a few older people in the office look at me funny as well. The media and the WHO really have blown this thing out of proportion. Hell even Joe Biden is in on the act scaring people. 75 people in the US get the flu and it is just everywhere across the news.

Also when are we going to find out where it originated

Re: Swine Flu

This entire situation is nothing short of sensationalism, and the media should be ashamed of itself. The number of people who have this flu is a statically infinitesimal and it has everyone afraid when they should not be. Consider this people: The Swine flue has between 350 and 400 confirmed cases out of a world population of 7 billion people. That is a percentage so small it is hardly measurable. In addition, only 11 people have lost their lives, not to marginalize the importance of these people who died, but that is a really REALLY small number in the larger scope of things. Now, I would like you all to consider that when we deal with the regular flu strains that humans contract on a regular basis, did you know that millions of people contract this every year, and every year there are 1000s of deaths from the flu in the U.S. alone, totaling about 100 per day. Everyone needs to put on his or her thinking caps and get a little more rational about the true scope of the situation. Moreover, it is not just peoples fear that this media circus is affecting, it is also kicking the economy when the economy is down. People are freaking out based on the media’s word and cancelling their trips to places that are nowhere near Mexico! I work for a travel agency that has been poised to survive this economic down turn, but now this flu has come on the scene many people may loose their jobs if this is not dealt with properly and fears subsided soon. If I loose my job I due to this irresponsible yellow journalism, I will not blame Mexico or the virus; I will blame the media.

I'm no fan of the media and their sensationalism, but that is a load of ignorant bullshit.

Whether or not this becomes a pandemic, and the odds are still that it will (although things look better now than a few days ago), the current number of infections is not particularly relevant - the fact that it is spreading person-to-person and killing people is. The rate of spread of any disease that is transmitted in this way will grow exponentially, but has to start somewhere - so the fact there are only a few hundred infected now is the beginning, and in a weeks time it COULD well be millions - we don't know yet.

liquidmesa, I agree you.. All the media is good for now is a good laugh. It's a sad fact that people don't use what's between their ears for what it's there for. An because the 'NEWS' is telling them it is so they believe it. Why waste the energy to think for oneself when someone else is telling you how it is?

Here are some of the facts... http://informationclearinghouse.info/article22518.htm
