Hi everyone, I moved from Peru to New Jersey three years ago, oviously when I go out to party my destination is always New York City. When I left all the parties in Peru were about progressive house, I had the oportunity to listen djs like Sasha, Digweed and Cattaneo. Since I'm here I listened Mr. Digweed aswell but his set was more techno and tech house, and Cattaneo he always loyal to progressive, the think is I'm trying to find progressive house parties and it seems that now there's only house, techno and tech house in New York, Is any of you New Yorkeans know about some good proggy venues out there please let me know, I will appreciate. Thanks.

Is progressive house in New York dead?
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
Where have you been the past 5 years? There are hardly any more champions of prog as we knew it.
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
there are some extremely knowledgeable [ms]'ers whom i'd imagine got quite the low down, as far as nyc goes...
additionally, there are sometimes -- when i'm listening to some good madoka, jeff belfi and shane ehlers -- that i picture to myself just how dank the prog scene is over there on the regular. idunno, but my friend is a new jersey dj, and he says the prog is somewhat alive on the east coast (that was like 2 yrs ago). prog is nearly dead over here tho :(
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
^^^ thats because Orange County blows
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
It's all :hollow: "Electronic Music" these days.
No DJ's use the "P" word for fear of being pidgeon holed or marginalised with being stuck in a time warp or behind the times - "House" is also only used with extreme caution too.
For some reason Tech seems trendy now ... it's the new Minimal after everybody realised the Electro truly blows. Also saying something is influenced by the "Berlin" sound seems to get brownie points too.

Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
Pot brownie points. ;)
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
@ simonr : "tech," "progno," "mnml," etc. etc. have been trendy for a while now. no one realized "electro" sucks, it's just that most dj's didn't know how to do it right as a deejay. yes parlance prog/progbreaks is dead, if not for forsaken period, but it's transformational elements are still versatile -- and long livin. (imho of course)
@ haziel : lol yeah. but "the bubble" is better known for other prominent genres. it does however, in my opinion have a killer house and deep scene.
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
Is it safe to say "tribal" is dead?
I'd like Techno Tribal to be the new "in" thing ... seriously :D

Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
just tell em you play everything, then play everything. lol
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
speaking of, can someone recommend a club in Miami that plays brazilian drum & bass tribal mashups on weeknights and underground vocal breakbeats on the weekend?
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
^ D.I.Y. ;)

And this is what kills me. I went to Timewarp in Mannheim the other day , and albeit I had a good time, but for as many people being on the bill for a 20+ hour music festival, There was absolutely no melody or soul, or groove for that matter. I mean it was like 0830 in the morning and Loco Dice was droppin the same techno beat ( with the climax being a new hi hat)That I had been hearing for 10 hrs. what is the deal with that shit? i just don't undersatand there being no difference in sets. Its a waste of money and time.
Laurent Garnier, Yoris Voorn, and Carl cox were enjoyable, but the rest of the sets were forgettable.
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
I used to worry about that shit, frankly I don´t give a damn anymore, I can find good prog-house out there, you just have to take your time in digging for it, it´s not as prevalent as before, that´s all.
Shameless plug, i just did a mix for Tribalmixes radio which hopefully will show this.
As for what´s playing in the clubs and festivals, fuck it, I just don´t go there, nor do I feel any kind of need to ´belong´ or be ´cool´ music-wise, I just stay home and listen to what I want. Maybe I´m just old and over the hill musically, I don´t care.
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
^ well fucking said man. btw., that one mix u did not to long ago was killer.
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
If you define your genres of music very narrowly, meaning that you want "progressive house" today to always sound exactly like it did in the summer of 1999...then yes, it is dead.
If you define your genres of music more broadly and stay open to evolutions of sound in terms of what "progressive house" means...then no, it is not necessarily dead. To me, Sasha and Digweed are still properly carrying on the legacy of "progressive house" in what they do; they are honestly far from real "minimal".
It's up to you whether you want to stay in 1999 or go with the changes. But music always changes and waits for no one.

This is also quite true.
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
^^ word. that last line of yours was strait up wisdom miro. regards.
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
so basically labeling sub genres is a moot point in EDM.
right?
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
Well if you looked at progressive house history, it HAS evolved drastically ... the reason so many people harp on about the 99-early 2000 era is because that's when a lot of current EDM fans got into the scene.
But I find over the years progressive house has/had a signature: melodies, vocals, and a beat or bassline that has energy in it. Listen to Sasha or Digweed sets from the early 90s, they aren't bass heavy, they just have great beats that drives you on the dancefloor. Even when progressive house got pared down and went more 'minimal' with the darker stuff, the emphasis went to the bass lines for that deepness, those huge rolling phat basslines.
Contrast with the electro or minimal influence. Electro had these fucking irritating synths and the structure of the tracks sounds like trance to me in the way they always build up to the irritating bits. I don't have a quibble with minimal in general, I think minimal on its own is fine, but when transported into the progressive house genre, it was neither here nor there: The minimal influence made progressive house sound aenemic with its flat beats and thin-sounding melodies (when there were any), and I am sure from the minimal camp, they thought it was equally shit.
What's lacking in progressive house is musicality and basslines with substance. Just listen to Spooky, Jark Prongo or Moshic. Granted it shouldn't be a comparison because the music has moved on and we should be listening to it with a different mindset, but to me, progressive house has lost its essence in its evolution.
Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
i live here, im out on long island.
it aint dead not at all

Re: Is progressive house in New York dead?
ha ha ha ha... it's like a never ending tree diagram of subcategories with you guys. can't just call it rock and roll, noooooo it has to be called alternative rock->goth rock->industrial rock->indie->emo->hardcore->screamo. Can't just call it electronica or techno, noooooooooooo. prog->edm->mars->drum and bass->mars->minimal->experimental->tribal->NES blah i cant take it anymore. Sorry for the rant...someone posted a pretty spiffy diagram of all the various forms of dance music since sythetic sounds had been created, anyone got a link to that anymore?

Hey is you are unable to find any proggy venues.. I'd say you're next best bet would be to hop on over to the P&R section .. there's a boat load of proggy sets there that should keep you going forever.. ..
