What do you mean live? Please explain...he doesn't play an instrument? He doesn't make music live on a program...or does he?

Was kinda hoping to get a set from him that would display his dj capabilities to the max...every set I heard from him was so so...granted there haven't been many, but nothing really blew my mind...

Re: How shit is this T/L???

I'm going to assume this is a serious query, you should check him out mate

he produces, composes, plays numerous instruments, drums, guitar, keyboards, etc .. oh, and he dj's once in a while too :) but also does actual live shows

Re: How shit is this T/L???

He's an ableton/computer guy, and prefers playing his own music.

Re: How shit is this T/L???

he's much more than that, lol

Re: How shit is this T/L???

^Yeah, I wasn't saying that in a bad way, I mean when he plays live its ableton, soft synths etc. I may be wrong but I don't think he takes other instruments out of the studio.

so more musically inclined. And not a douche.

Tell me, does he ever wear silly costumes that just beg for it to be lit up with gasoline-fueled flames?

Re: How shit is this T/L???

i'm not his biggest fan, but two years ago when chromophobia came out on kompakt i heard him play "live" at demf on the pyramid stage in the afternoon and i had a fantastic time and thought it was awesome then (i was also faced). that said, it was pretty much just like putting in his chromophobia cd and listening from start to finish, so i'm not really sure how much "live" was going on. cueing up ableton and running through the scenes isn't playing live to me, but que sera sera, he's big, he blows up clubs, he's a hell of a producer. i wouldn't pay money to see specifically him, but there's no denying he's talented. he's blurring the lines between trance and techno, which is probably why i dig some of his stuff and can't stand a lot of the rest. lots of over the top synth epicness. it's working for him tho.

Re: How shit is this T/L???

Yeah...I know his music never heard him live though...dj-ing or making shit as he goes along...either way. Of course I have listened to other dj's perform live on ableton but I still think if your mixing your own shit up...its no fun. I still think its a shit T/L. I mean as you said it yourself cuing shit in ableton is not performing live imo. Now if he was making up music as he went along that would be a different story... starting with something and finishing with something abslutley different. Like a reeeeaaaaalllllly long song ;)

Anyway...I guess to each his own...I was hoping ho hear him play something kinda new...but I have pretty much all those songs as already

There's your mistake. Boratto is first a producer then a DJ, in fact I wouldn't even call him a DJ. All his gigs are live performances. Like catching Underworld or Aril Brihka live, or Joris Voorn before he took on DJ duties.

Back in the day when producers were producers and DJs were DJs, you didn't run into confusion like that.

DJ = dude plays / mixes other peoples' music, oftentimes not just through a computer.

I don't know that Gui Boratto has ever DJ'd in his life. I thought he generally just goes to shows and plays his own shit out of his laptop. That's what happened when I saw him at DEMF that year that Jenks mentioned... was ok for me, nothing too memorable. By that time, Gui's music had been so oversaturated that I knew exactly what to expect - even the order in which he would play the tunes. And he basically just stood behind his laptop and clicked away with a trackpad, or whatever.

Certainly nothing like the first time I saw Mathew Jonson down in Miami several years before that. That was spiritual.

Re: How shit is this T/L???

Defo one of my fave producers out there. I can't say anything about his "live" show though... He's gonna be here in Denver next weekend but it looks like I have to miss it again! :(

Yeah Matthew Johnson is amazing...I am pretty sure I have a couple of sets by Gui Boratto though...that include other ppls songs. They are just not very good imo. He is still one of my favorite producers out there along with guy j, dousk, pablo bolivar...etc

exactly. But what he does should NOT be deemed as playing Live. Even considering he is using "Live" as his platform for his sets. He's a laptop performer.

Re: How shit is this T/L???

i just want to say for the record that I'm thoroughly enjoying his essential mix right now.

I've tried to simply listen to it and get a feel for his music. I'm about 40 minutes in at this point, and I felt inspired to write how good this set is, no matter how many tracks of his that he's using. Even if they are his own tracks, they're still pretty good. I was working on the assumption that he was part of the "let's see how much post-modern minimal-without-soul music we can play" crew, but I'm quite mistaken.

I probably would not go see him play live (though apparently he was recently in philly, and I should have gone because there is an absolute glut of ANY house dj's in this city), but as for background music, this is THE SHIT.

Ok, maybe i'd check him out live.

Re: How shit is this T/L???

Dude no one here is doubting the mans production skills. The music he makes is pure gold IMHO...I was just complaining about his dj skills but as I have been informed by the above posts...he is not really a DJ.

then there's the other argument: it only matters what comes out of the speakers and if people are dancing to it (which i don't agree with- the means to the end matter to me)

#1192238Post 26 of 30

Re: How shit is this T/L???

yeah but I think most of us don't go to a club to just "dance"...I like to think that some of us come to actually listen to the music being played and how the music is being played. Oh how I sometimes wish that I could return to the blissful days of just dancing...back when I thought dj's were magicians or priests or some divine shit like that. I thought they weaved their spells on the audience and made them all move as one to the tribal beat...then I discovered pills and knew why everyone moved like one LOL

anyways back on topic...I think there is more to it.Otherwise i would be buying the new Britney Spears or whatever those who just "dance" listen to...

p.s. maybe I come off a bit pretentious but i honestly don't understand the appeal in a lot of todays popular music...its like all of them are like "I got hoes and money" or like "I got dumped" or "I am doing the dumping cuz I am a slut"...whatever

read the gd post m8. i was saying i was under the impression that his music sucked. Internal discord resolved through a good long listen of his e-mix.

Consider this: DJ stands for DISC-JOCKEY. That requires a DISC. ANything short of a disc-like object and you're not a dj. you're something else. Laptop Jockey, Live PA. whatever. Not a DJ.

amirite:shock:

Sure which is why I started that thread about laptop mixing  But in this instance, it's just a simple mixup, you thought he was a DJ when he clearly wasn't one. Not a big deal.

bro I doubt you would have ever said that when people could only spin vinyl or cd's.
