Housemate Advice Needed

So I live in the lower level of a house and above me I have two male housemates and the one guys gf basically lives here too. We all rent from my one of my good friends and his gf (who now live 2 doors away) and for the most part we get along just great....the only problem is them smoking in the house.

We all signed lease agreements stipulating that we would not smoke in the house, but they seem to have forgotten or just don't give a crap. Normally I wouldn't care what other people do, but the problem with them smoking is that it comes down into my apartment through the furnace vents (one is directly above my head on the couch where I am sitting now, and another directly above my bed where I sleep).

I hate the smell more than anything and it drives me insane! There is nothing worse then sitting on the couch or laying in bed having wafts of cigarette smoke coming down on you or when you are gone for a day over the weekend to come home and your entire apartment reeks of smoke.....one time there was even a haze when I came in the door as they were having a party upstairs and a ton of people were smoking inside.

When I first moved in I complained to my friend about them smoking and he went over and advised them if they didn't stop, they would have to find somewhere else to live as this wasn't the first time he had warned them. It worked for a bit, but then the started again. A couple months ago I finally snapped and asked them to stop and they told me they were only doing it in the winter when it was really cold, but they would stop doing it....well its nice out now and they haven't stopped (surprise surprise).

I just don't know what to do at this point. I love where I live as its a great apartment, my best friend is across the street, and it is also really close to where I work, but I am fed up as I pay a lot of money to live somewhere that is smoke free and isn't. I have complained to them and they don't listen or care, so its seems to leave only one other option, but I don't want to be responsible for getting them kicked out either.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

Yeah, run , don't walk and tell them what is happening  You are not responsible they are.!! If they are too infantile to comprehend adult behaviour they should go, definitely not you !! You actually owe it to your good friend to tell them . Cigarette smoke does an amazing amount of damage. Not to mention the burns that happen as well !

They have been told the consequences of their actions, they chose this way, you certainly didn't.

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

I agree with DIDI

they obviously aren't looking out for anyone but themselves, so why should you? not having to smoke outside because it is cold isn't in their lease is it?

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

I smoke and I think you should tell them once more and if they do it again tell your friend immediately and get pretty pissed off...I mean they are being dicks in all honesty and you shouldn't put up with their shit

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

Agree except for the one more time thing  They have been told, and told. Telling them again will only make DQ feel bad and she shouldn't!

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

yeah..well I am just saying what I would do...I am more sympathetic since I am a smoker and I know what its like to smoke outside in the winter :)
not having to smoke outside because it is cold isn't in their lease is it?
Nah, that was just their excuse....they stood in the kitchen with the window open and smoked when it was cold out thinking that because the window was open I wouldn't notice them smoking.

Yeah I think I will have to go and complain....I just wish there was another way to solve it, but they aren't leaving me much of a choice.

I had friends over on the weekend and they noticed the smell too...some of them are even smokers and noticed and complained. My friends all go outside to smoke when they are here, and even at their own places.....if they can manage smoking outside, then the guys upstairs should be able to manage it as well.

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

lol, yeah, that was a rhetorical question

you have every right to feel comfortable where you live, if that includes getting people to leave that are not following the rules, that's on them, not you

#1185402Post 9 of 54

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

I'm a smoker and in the smokers mind the smoke is only traceable when it goes in your lungs, we don't realize if there is a minor draft in the house it makes the smoke go in and out and everywhere around the house.

I would talk to them one more time and tell them this has to stop if they don't do it , you will have to tell your friend .

If they continue go ahead tell your friend , give power to your word.

Btw If we seem to be talking different seasons of the year here so they have definitely been told enough , they have probably got to the stage where they think you won't do anything anyway. Nothing like beating your head against a brick wall to make you feel sick and angry. :)

#1185423Post 15 of 54

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

The fact of the matter is that they signed a lease that said it is a smoke free home. Tell your friend Karen and don't bother discussing it with your roommates upstairs. You've given them enough chances.

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

Had a college roomate who was a smoking machine, would open his door and a blue cloud would roll out, the guy spent all his time in the room studying, so we partied everyday for a month straight till early in the morning to get him to leave, loud music, strangers sleeping outside his door when he woke up, then load up on some LSD and get so weird, he would not come out of that room for days, anyway, as to your problem I would move out, get your security deposit back from either the home owner or the roommates that place is a sinking ship, so its either time to crank up the hate, slash their tires, smoke all their weed, drink all their booze, eat all their food, and the glue their locks or find some other roomies. I personally perfer the former, oh the stories, roomate stories, now that would be a good thread. Good Luck DQ

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

Don't even think about moving DQ. You are upholding your end of the lease agreement and they should too. If you want to tell them one more time, let them know why it bothers you, that it stinks up your house and that you can't stand the smell. Bring up the lease if necessary. If you don't want to talk about with them again, then let your friend (landlord) know about it, and don't feel bad for one second. You haven't done anything wrong.

Sorry you have to deal with that shit, I hate cigarette smoke too.

go overboard with air freshener and pot porri!

see if they get the hint or a blinding headache! ;)

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

yeah, I'd just go straight to your friend and tell him. Your housemates have gotten enough warnings.

Also, there are these things called "e-cigs"...apparently smoke free. It has a little nicotine capsule in the "cig" which is vaporized and inhaled, so there is none of the smoke or other bad things associated with tobacco cigs. Maybe your housemates should invest in a few of those.

I guess its that I would feel bad for getting them kicked out....I know its not me that is at fault, but I am sure they would be pissed at me for ratting them out....but I get what everyone is saying. It isn't me that is doing anything wrong and they are aware of the agreement and the consequences, so they should have to deal with them.....you'd think at 30 and 32 they'd have the decency to follow the rules

get your friends that you rent off to have a word with them.

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

^ Exactly... who do you have loyalty to, your friend who owns the house and wants it kept smoke free (so future non-smoking tenants will rent it) or the smokers who could care less about your friend (the owner) and you?

Or just continue to suffer in silence.

Fuck them, nothing to feel bad about if they can't uphold their end of the lease. That's their responsibility, not yours.

Some people never grow up, get the landlord involved, if the roomies get stinky so be it, large flaming bags of dog turds in their room is what I am thinking, no, everyone signed a binding agreement if they don't stop have the landlord give them the boot, the house is the last place you should have to be stressed.

You could always do this instead

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

I have the same problem. My neighbors below smoke cigars all day to try to cover up the smells of their illegal dealings. I don't mind the occassional quality weed smoke smell, but cigars blah. However, they put up with my loud music, late hours, grilling on the balcony and DDR. So I have learned to put up with their cigar smoking and crack dealing to keep things civil. I feel it is a good trade off for living in a crammed apartment complex and not having enough money to buy a house.

It almost seems like they might be smoking some cannabis, I really don't see why anyone would like to smoke cigarettes inside the house. You might just have a serious talk with them and tell them to use spoofs or what not, because they might be afraid to smoke outside due to getting caught.

#1188648Post 31 of 54

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

How about getting them to get some proper ventilation ... those air-moving fans. Open a window and point one of them at the window or away to suck fresh air in, might alleviate the problem. Most of the time the smoke-smell problem is more ventilation than anything else. It's like going to a club when they allow smoking, and coming home with stinking of it ... if it's an enclosed space, it's only logical the smoke finds the path of least resistance and the smell stays.

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

So Dq how did it go?

#1189402Post 40 of 54

Re: Housemate Advice Needed

Everything went as well as could be expected. There was some arguing, some denial (said it must be the incense that they burn sometimes), which my friend called them out on, and then a final decision.

My friend advised them that this would be their absolute last and final warning. He then advised them that he would be randomly checking the place/stopping over to ensure they are upholding the end of their agreement and if not, there will be no other chances.

Lets just say they are not to pleased with me and I am sure in the next few weeks I will hear a lot of stomping around upstairs and door slamming each time they go outside to smoke (which has already begun).

Thanks again for the advice everyone and for giving me the courage to actually complain.....hopefully it makes a difference, but I guess time will tell
