So i have gone completely of GU.

we all know of the various threads and discussions over their change/lost of taste and direction.

However, not to be one to pigeon hole i decided to give Emersons last release a try.

Now, i never really rated this last 2 cds. his first, GU15 was bad at all. Gu18 was less than memorable. but this is when confronted with the other gu's. on their own they are pretty decent cds.

and Bogota?

well i listened to cd1 in the car and i enjoyed it! not half bad. cd2 kinda passed me by.

will need to relisten to both but on first impressions, i'd say it a not a bad cd. definitely better than thie recent releases!

It's not bad, was expecting worse.

Think disc 1 is the better one, but love the skyscraper finish on disc 2.

I really really like this and not just because I'm biased.

Re: GU 36 - Darren Emerson - Bogota

Now I know its the Mix that is the most important thing but I don't really like the concept they have now it seems like a load of shite. I'm fully aware its not a recording of the night. But how can it be a mix of tunes inspired by the night when you've done the mix before the night. Its actually a night inspired by the mix. My understanding of the old process is you go to the location, do the gig., come back then create a mix inspired by the gig.
The city location is the choice of the DJ- they choose that location based on what is inspiring them in the international scene and on their experiences with that city. This is the first point of call. Only then do they go into the studio to compile a city album- the mix is based around the vibe, flavour and experience of that particular city. Next comes the album gig, which acts as a space for the DJ to air their mix/or track choices to that specific community, and for the artwork to be shot. Emerson obviously chose Bogota due to the music coming from that region and the gigs he had done previously -Bogota being the city that is inspiring him personally at the moment. The city albums have never claimed to be inspired from the specific album party gig, just the city and underground scene as a whole.
^yes

Anyone want to list any of the first 25 GU's where the CD was done before the Event

that i didnt know!

Re: GU 36 - Darren Emerson - Bogota

i believe of all the compilation there is one GU that is actually recorded live , i can't remember right now which one is it.

Anyhow I agree with what chunky says ... So i guess now the whole idea is to actually play that night the tracks that are already in the recorded mix really sucks...how can a dj leave the house knowing what to spin that night.

Re: GU 36 - Darren Emerson - Bogota

It's a concept album and always has been. Where you the guy going on about it over on the GU board? Does it REALLY matter if it was on/before/after the night?

Nope it hasn't. Have you ever read any of the sleeve notes, read any of the magazine articles or watched any of the promo videos. So are you saying most the Cd's have been finished before the event took place. and yes I am the guy going on about it on GU.

#1150847Post 11 of 58

Re: GU 36 - Darren Emerson - Bogota

I was always under the impression that the cd's are/were to reflect what was played, or in the dj's "record box", at the period of time when he/she was at that specific location.

The first 4 where live recordings on the Cd's. Then they stopped doing live sets on Cd's for two reasons. The quality of the recordings and some of the artists started demanding stupid money to clear the track. Which is a nightmare with a continuous mix CD.

nick warren prague. the only one done live. although, he still remains the only DJ of their roster to actually sit and recrod the CD's on tables and cdj's

everyone else just pumps it all into protools and arranges the tracks.

I just love the hypocrisy on this board and how it professes to support the DJs by hosting mix archives yet quite openly broadcasts and fuels the distribution of promotional copies of retail albums at the same time.

umm, i'm sorry to correct you but there is absolutely NO posting of copywrited material here. we may talk about having heard it, but under no circumstances is anyone alowed to 'fuel' the distribution of promotional copies of retail albums.

Yeah gone are those days when I stepped into Tower Records looking forward to a new GU. I remember having all my wisdom teeth taken out, making the trip right after, picking up Oakenfold's box set and heading home to knock out.

So we can't talk about pre-release music now? Can I post tits?

Am not stating that it's done openly, but is certainly discussed, but there have been rumblings in recent weeks that theres a leakage of promo copies of albums trading hands via this site, and that has filtered back to some of the related labels too.

I know that many people involved here invest a lot of time and effort into developing and running this community, so am sure that those of you who create these threads about albums that are in the public domain ahead of their release wouldn't want the hard work discredited if the rumours of albums being circuated, via PM or otherwise were to be substantiated. Just an observation that deserved some comment really.

Re: GU 36 - Darren Emerson - Bogota

Dude, that's like saying we can't go on MSN, we can't go on Soulseek, we can't get online, because any form of music sharing might be linked back to MS because we all happen to talk shit on here. Which goes the same for the GU forum, the RA forum, and any other music form where discussions like this take place.

As much as I get your point, you're suggesting what, that we stop talking about pre-release music? Are you taking up your issues with Google?

Am not saying you can or cannot do anything, was merely making a comment based on the observations of this thread which if you were to look at it was created with the intent to talk about having heard it. It just plain fuels speculation about what I mentioned.

Indeed once things are in the public domain theres not a great deal anyone can do to stop the flow of such things. The point i was trying to get across is that it pays to be mindful just how openly and the way in which it's discussed when there allegations like I mentioned floating around.

End of the day, it's much the same as those net radio statiions that in the past used to broadcast these things before they became official platforms, much like Frisky and Proton Radio are. Most changed their ideas and promoted the availability of these things less obviously so as to avoid damage to their brand / community. As such, I'm just saying maybe a bit more diplomacy wouldn't go amiss at times. ;)

So have you heard that album from the once-cool label by that dweeb who used to be part of this hot electronica band? I'm thinking a number between 30 and 37. Take a guess ;)
I just love the hypocrisy on this board and how it professes to support the DJs by hosting mix archives yet quite openly broadcasts and fuels the distribution of promotional copies of retail albums at the same time.
the "hypocrisy" on this board is we are not a red state controlling everything down to what people now have a right to talk about via PM (which translates to a private message and I'm sure you wouldn't like if it the mods and admins started patrolling your private messages on here to make sure we do away with the so-called hypocrisy).

If it's "shared" in public, as day_for_night pointed out, it's removed. Making a comparison of hosting a "radio archive" vs. "distributing promotional copies of a retail album" is like taking me to court for stealing the monopoly money I nicked from your house. Be fair, we are here to address and correct issues any DJ may have when it comes to them losing a chunk of their livelihood.

We always have and we always will promote the DJs. That's why the only button to date you see on here, is a "Paypal" button on the top of the site.

If you have an issue with something that is being "shared", which you are aware of and affects you in anyway (personally or professionally), then contact one of the team members and take it up with them. Don't round off the entire team and the forum by calling us hypocritical because of something you "believe" is going on in private as it is a very fine line between the freedom people have on this board and to the far limits we allow it to go before we now become a bunch of dicks throwing our weights around to serve a means to an end.

When a promo copy of an album or track does get posted, it's usually by a noob that doesn't know the rules on here. I haven't seen a link to a promo copy of anything last more than a few minutes on here. The link gets deleted, and the thread gets locked within minutes.

It is not tolerated here. We have plenty of well known artists on [MS], and we respect their hard work and efforts by not allowing promo links to be posted.

Out.
