Hey, has anyone driven from coast to coast lately? I'll be heading to California from Boston next week, and have decided to have some fun and check out the states. I was thinking flying and then renting a car, but finding a rental car seems to be freakin' expensive.

Is anyone familiar with any sites that gives you detailed directions with lodging along the way, and possibly gas prices? I haven't found much on mapquest or mapblast. I know that I will be taking Rt-80 all the way.

thanks, glad to see ms back joe 8)

thanks willie, but I have to have a small plan set up at least. Just curious what gas prices are, and where I can find some detailed directions. Why should I avoid Kansas? Also, is it tornado season out in the mid-west? That would suck to drive right into one

I haven't done the full trip but did go from Chicago to LA. Was a fun trip.

If you plan coming through Texas, avoid I-10 between San Antonio and El Paso because there is JACK SHIT between the two cities, which is about 550 miles.

Get a copy of Mappoint or Streets & Trips...that stuff maps out restaurants, lodgings, best routes, you name it...

I did San Fransisco to boston...

I took 80E the whole way then got on 90(pike) right to my house :)

I went thru nebraska, ohio, iowa, indiana, nevada, wyoming, pennsylvania, new york, utah, plus a few others. It was tons of fun.

We didnt make plans along the way, we just drove till we felt like stopping and would find motel 6, or something similar...

Did the trip right after 9-11 and found that gas prices really depended on the states and hotels/motels were pretty easy to find and cheap ones at that. And if you really would like to see some of the country, get the hell off the highway and start taking some more local roads. Views aren't that great on the highway, especially compared to the other roads.

ruby i wonder if we drove by each other...thats when i took my trip too!

I actually really enoyed 80 in iowa..and wyoming.

rt 80 all the way???!!

Negative take 78 West to 81 South to 40 West to 30 West and swing through Dallas.

Besides you can cut hrs off of your time by driving through NM and AZ.

Of course it depends where in cal you want to go.

wyoming was too much fun to just stay on the highways though. yellowstone, teton...

I started 4 days before 9/11 and finished two days after.

Wyoming is so pretty, the sunsets and sunrises are amazing. The roads themselves all pretty much have scenic views, plus all the touristy stuff too.

#199211Post 16 of 24

Yellowstone is really superb if you go up to the highest continental divide and you look at the stars. It was the first time i actually saw the milky way galaxy pretty insane how many stars there are.

#199221Post 17 of 24

Oh yeah, beware of Wall Drug (in the middle of south dakota). One hell of a tourist trap with not much to offer! When you get closer to the dakotas, you'll completely understand why I'm saying this.

Don't stop in New Jersey. You'll be eaten.

#199416Post 19 of 24

i would imagine gas prices would be a little cheaper when you are closer to the gulf...
