February 04, 2009 [I]Edition 2[/I] [B]NINIEK KARMINI[/B] JAKARTA: Indonesian fishermen saved 198 starving, dehydrated people from Myanmar whom the country's naval officers say drifted for three weeks after authorities in Thailand made them put to sea in a boat that did not have an engine. "They were standing on the boat for 21 days because there was no space to sit," naval officer Tedi Sutardi said. Twenty-two others died on the 12-metre wooden boat during the crossing, the survivors told Indonesian officials. Numerous allegations have been made that Thai authorities habitually abuse boat people fleeing the military dictatorship in Myanmar by abandoning them at sea. Thailand has repeatedly denied the accusations. Indonesian fishermen discovered the boat off Aceh's coast in northern Sumatra and towed it ashore, Sutardi said. The passengers had run out of food and water. At least 91 of the boat people were admitted to the Idirayeuk General Hospital. The people on the boat were the second group of Rohingyas - a stateless Muslim people who have endured decades of persecution in Myanmar - group to have reached Indonesia in a month. Other boats filled with migrants have been found near India's Andaman Islands. The boat people said they had been beaten and set adrift by Thai authorities, Sutardi said. One of them told investigators he and the others were among 1 000 Rohingyas who had been working in Thailand as migrant labourers, Sutardi said.
