And he loves us !! I've just got home from an absolutely magical night, I've seen Danny a couple of times but tonight he was just fucking amazing. I danced through the whole six hour plus set and I am totally wrecked. In the best possible way :D

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

I'm glad you gave him the reception he deserved in Melbourne.

It was a different story here in Perth. I didn't go but the DJ before Howells was apparently playing trance. Danny only played for an hour. I hope he comes back and plays somewhere better...actually I hope I move to Melbourne!

This is from Danny's blog:
Only two days in, yet wondering what I'm doing here. It's not the crowds or the venues that's wrong, but I'm just curious as to what my purpose is. I'm supposed to be promoting my Renaissance cd - if anyone's heard it, it's quite deep, and the tempo ranges from about 120 to 127 bpm. I don't know how I'm supposed to promote it or play remotely in that style when opening djs decide to play techno/trance at 132 bpm right before I go on.

Last night in Perth was a great example of a lost opportunity. Really cool, intimate club with a nice crowd. However, as I was walking in, the first track I heard was "The Man With The Red Face" being blasted at 132 bpm. This is not just ignorance, this is downright rude. If you're playing a support slot, you really need to have at least the vaguest idea of what the headline dj is going to play. After the promoter told this dj to "bring it down a bit", he brought the tempo down a notch. The music, however, was the kind of driving prog/trance that I imagine Armin Van Buuren plays. As a result I played a shorter set than I was supposed to. It was impossible to hold onto the energy that this guy had created, and so there was very little I could do musically.

I don't come down under very often, so it's a kick in the teeth when I'm forced into either banging the shit out of it all night thanks to the opener, or am forced into playing a reduced set time. I come here to do my best, and if I'm not being given the platform to do that, then I'm very sorry.

I'm talking to my agent about ensuring the rest of the tour goes to plan - if this means I have to do all the opening slots myself, then that's what I'll do. Sorry to sound so grumpy, but I wanted to air this. Keeping my fingers crossed for the rest of the trip!

Glad you had such an amazing tim DIDI! Danny sounds so disapointed about the Perth gig. And he should be!! Way to go opening D.J. I would have been pissed if I went to that gig!

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

good on Danny to say something imo.. it was probably some local dickhead thinking this was his big chance to impress Danny Howells with a scorcher of an opening set, lol

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

who was the opening DJ?

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

Danny has always been top notch every time i catch him and a real nice guy to talk to as well .. nice to know that he was awesome as usual in Melbourne but just sucks to hear that the opening DJ in Perth had to ruin the night for everyone though

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

I was there at the Perth gig and it was a recipe for disaster from the beginning. Danny was booked at a night called Frisk which is one of the cheesiest and most metrosexual "electro house" fail nights in this city. If you actually care about music, which most of the people that attend this night don't, you'll agree it's rubbish. Think guys wearing massively open v-neck shirts and snakeskin shoes. The only thing going for the night is lots of tarts. Anyway I'm a big fan of Howells and wasn't going to miss his set so I went along. This was only the second time I had ever been to a Frisk night because after the first time I decided I will probably never go again. This is an example of the music they promote on their website "Slut Electro, Ghetto Fuck, Nu Wave Rave, Twisted Glam, Filthy Disco." You get the picture.

I don't know how he ended up playing at this night, as it was completely unsuitable. There was hardly any local promotion for it either. I asked a few people there, so are you a fan of Danny Howells? Their response "who is Danny Howells?" sigh The local support dj before Danny Howells is called "Damir." I arrived with about an hour remaining of his set. He was playing pretty mainstream house and then the last half hour went a bit heavier into epic driving deadmau5 prog stuff and pumping techno. I was beginning to think to myself... where the hell is Howells going to start from? Danny was supposed to start playing at 1.30am but be started playing at about 1.45am instead. I think he was waiting for the support dj to bring it down, but he never really did. Anyway Danny stepped up and started with his intro track, then into Danny Howells - Right Off (Danny's Discomix). Started nice and deep to my pleasant suprise, and he was still holding the dancefloor. After about half an hour I heard that Danny wasn't particularly pleased with the situation he was in and was going to cut his set short. After just over 1hr Danny stepped down and the local closing dj took over. Danny played an excellent hour anyway, although it felt so short.

I was mega disappointed but had a feeling that something like this would happen because all the dj's and punters who are associated with Frisk are the type that listen to and play Ministry of Sound compilation tracks. Even one of the other local Frisk dj's was asking a friend whether Danny will start playing anything "dirtier and faster" soon. The unfortunate thing is that if he was booked at a different night and with different local support, that this would have been a stellar night. Now I wouldn't be suprised if he never wants to return to Perth again. Fuck what a disaster.

Anyway heard you guys in Melbourne were treated to a 6hr set! Jealous is a huge understatement!

Oh how I have stressed his points to almost every dj in this town and they still do this shit.

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

damn, thats a strange story from his blog re: the Perth gig!! What kind of whack opener got the opportunity to spin before him and plays "The Man With The Red Face" before peak time?!!!

a dj at a club that promotes

"Slut Electro, Ghetto Fuck, Nu Wave Rave, Twisted Glam, Filthy Disco."

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

^ oh you saw the myspace page, too?

People who DJ or go to that club could never appreciate Danny anyways. Not when they list hard house dj's on thier roster. He should be happy he skirted a few grand away from them.

although i find it odd that he didn't have enough In-Tec records to throw down.

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

Nice, I think I'll catch him in Sydney this weekend!

Re. the Perth debacle, let's face it, how many DJs these days are willing to play a real warmup set? When's the last time you guys heard a good warmup for a 'headliner' DJ?

It takes a lot of confidence and humility to understand the place of a warmup set and you have to put your ego aside, and these days, DJs don't become DJs for that!

#1114856Post 17 of 52

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

I'll be at the Sydney gig too! Can't wait. Shame about his Perth gig.
who was the opening DJ?
Some local wanting to make a name for himself . Came onto a forum here saying Danny should harden the fuck up !!!!!! Maybe his username on the forum explains a little "DKolonic"

Btw Danny took down that blog, and has since apologised for it . Personally I think he had every right to say what he did and I appreciate that he said it!!

Also just found out he is playing again at a club within walking distance on Thursday night.:D Just time to recover :D

Feather, Rollin connection played the best warm up set last night. :D A good Dj should be able to do a good warmup set. We have a lot of good Djs in Melbourne. :D

Forgot one asked about deep house, I thought so , whatever, it was some of the sexiest music I've heard in yonks, built slowly and superbly over the night! You knew it was going to be amazing from the 1st track and it was :D

Keep forgetting stuff. He was down at floor level, and the sound/vj guy said it was being recorded:D Fabulous crowd of incredibly friendly people who certainly knew who Danny was.

#1114862Post 20 of 52

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

It would be better if Howells did the entire night, during his Dig Deeper tour, he opened the club and played till closing, where he starts his sets with ambient tracks, some old school hip house, then deep stuff, working into the heavier techno over an eight hour night, working the crowd the entire time, he'll never turn down a free shot, takes pics with everyone, play till the house pulls the plug, the people's dj and still rocks the vinyl.

He shouldn't need to take down that blog comment nor apologise! Too nice! DKolonic should shut the fuck up and stuff Deadmau5 in his costume up his ass so we never need to hear from either again.

Glad you had fun Didi. Howells put on a good show here in NOLA too a few years back. Would absolutely love to see him again sometime.

There's actually been some nice recorded sets coming out of Melb recently, hope this surfaces. Was this a Darkbeat party? They released the Pappa set?

It was a Darkbeat day rave :D But I think it was Danny that was recording it, not the Darkbeat Guys. Haven't hide nor hair of Grant in ages , but he was Sydney based. Really huge contributor.:D

I'm so jealous. I'm missing his set here in sydney this weekend, exams starting soon, so i can't really afford to have a late night on the weekend :(

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

Was and awsome set and Danny simply smashed the dancefloor and did so with the greatest of ease.

Six hours of musical bliss. Great music, crowd, kickass rig and an amzing talent behind the decks.

Might have to make it down to Qbar tomorrow, although my head is still hurting. :HungOver:

Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

Just backing up Didi's words Danny did an awesome show here in Melbourne and everyone was loving it I knew Melbourne would get things back on par after the Perth disaster, the Rollin boys did a perfect warmup for Danny and his set was just pure class, he started out with some really good deep tribal sounds lots of bongo's & yummy warm sounds and slowly progressed into some deep hypnotic funky progy house & techno he covered eveything in the 6-7 hours as u would imagine. I really hope the set becomes avalible for download I would luvvv to hear it again, Im very tempted to check him out again tomorrow 8)
hey guys..it was ME!! and to be honest im not feeling the slightest bit sorry for myself at all...danny howells is a world class dj and should have been able to deal with the situation in a much more profesional manner!! i was on 12 - 130..the club was packed, full of energy like it is every weekend...i think i did a reasonable job maintaining the room...not once did i play any techno/trance or did my bpm go anywhere near 132..infact i maintained it at 128 then in the last 20 min brought it right down to 125 which i personally think is rediculous for that time of the night!! i respect what he does and have always been a fan..but i was pretty disappointed in the position he put me in!!!
Re: Melbourne loves Danny Howells !

You should really read this whole thread. Its fucking hilarious

And Danny's response
Ok everyone. First of all, I've been feeling really bad since writing that original blog. I wanted to write something about why I played a shorter set, but it turned into an angry outburst. The next day I realized it was unprofessional to vent my frustrations in that manner so I deleted it. Too late though as once something's out there, it's out there! Colon, you're not the first DJ who's banged it before me recently, and I'm sure you won't be the last. Normally I just deal with it, as there's little else I can do. However, on this particular night, my record bag (which, I hasten to add, contains the bulk of my bangers, compared to my cd wallet which takes the bulk of my deeper stuff) had gone missing. So when I got to the club, I was taken to the office for a drink before I came on. On hearing what you were playing, I made it clear that it was going to be very difficult to follow you, especially as my records weren't with me. On no occasion did I refuse to go on, but Roy kindly offered to ask you to "bring it down a bit" which you did ... a bit! Once I got on it soon became clear that it was going to be very hard to maintain the energy you'd built up, and to hold onto the floor. That was why I requested the next DJ come on a bit earlier, as I felt I was wrecking the night with the change in flow. Colon, I'm sure you're a nice guy, and probably a great (peak-time) DJ too. But your comments are making it hard for me to like you. I never wanted this situation to escalate like this, but when I see your comments about how I've been "throwing the shits" (??! please elaborate - this is news to me!) and calling me a girl, you're not really doing yourself any favours. Anyway, I hope this all calms down as generating this kind of drama was never my intention. Perth, when I return next time, I'm gonna try and find a venue for an all-night Dig Deeper party. That will hopefully make up for the truncated set you got from me last weekend - I do want to make it up. And Colon - I'm sure we won't be playing together in the near future, but I'm willing to kiss and make up, but only if you can quit with slagging me off! And I would like to apologize for the way I publicly dealt with my frustrations. i took it out on you when in reality, you were just the straw that broke the camel's back. Danny
