absinthe
Re: absinthe
i saw it at my local liquor store but have not dared to try it yet...
Re: absinthe
Lucid is the main one in the states right now. Started by the guy who does the most expensive of the French Absinthes. I tried some and the black licorice taste and the anise was so overpowering that it really made my tastebuds go....EEEEEEEK. I haven't tried it since and i'm really glad to have not spent 100$ on a bottle from Europe.
If you like Black Licorice, you will probably like this drink.
Re: absinthe
lucid is the big brand here in new orleans. it's made here and supposedly top-notch, but i always think about grabbing a bottle at the worst moment.
Re: absinthe
so is it like jagermeister?
Re: absinthe
so is it like jagermeister?
worse by a ton.
this shit is worse than any medicine you had to take as a youngin. and the US shit doesnt do dick. you want the "real" stuff... go to amsterdam.
Re: absinthe
I thought it was supposed to make you hallucinate... You're saying the US stuff doesn't make you do that, and it tastes like shit? What's the point
Re: absinthe
exactly

I've only had the real stuff in Europe, smuggled 2 bottles back. Black and a Green one. Fecking great twisted times I tell you. One suddenly gets a moment of clarity and everything look really in focus; it's all downhill from there though. :)
Just in case someone says pic or STFU:

Re: absinthe
it doesn't make you hallucinate...it just makes you drunk a lot faster than other alcohols. There are many sites out there that will alude you to Absinthe's history and you'll find out a ton.
And no it tastes nothing like Jager. Jager has a madicine taste, where as Absinthe just takes like Black Licorice.
Re: absinthe
^sounds like instead of buying Jaeger and Absinthe, i should buy myself a bottle of green NyQuil and do a little q-trip.
Re: absinthe
you'd probably have more fun and for cheaper too.
Re: absinthe
and a MASSIVE hangover. took like 2 shots one night before going out, really didn't drink much more and felt awful the next morning.
Re: absinthe
not recommended. Soul-crushing hangover not worth it...
Re: absinthe
i've never been hung over from absinthe... and i have hallucinated on it.
i've also taken one shot of it and been completely wasted.
i love the stuff. dunno much about the quality of stateside bottles though...
Re: absinthe
i hate absinthe, and evarclear. eff it all.. i might take one of these tho!

Re: absinthe
Yeah, I hear the stuff stateside is made from a different kind of wormwood - one that does not contain any hallucigens. But I do like the tast of Black Liquorice ( I love Sambuca) so I might try some Absinthe. THough a hellish hangover doesn't sound good!
Re: absinthe
Does anyone know how many grams are in 10ppm of thujone?
Trying to figure out which absinthe has the most of this in it...Some say it doesn't matter, except to add bitterness...
"Absinthe doesn't have any other effect then the effect of the alcohol. The supposed hallucinogenic effect myth got around, because at the time there was loads of bullshit propaganda about it. Basically poor people drank it because it was cheap, that's why there was the propaganda, because the rich always have to have a reason to blame poor people for the problems they themselves cause in society. Then with the rise in popularity of absinthe, cheap knock-offs started being produced, that use copper salts to give it the green colour. This poisoned a lot of people, and these poisonings contributed to the ban.
It's a modern day myth that old fashioned absinthe had high thujone levels, and was extra psychoactive. GC/MS testings of authentic bottles from that time, show that the thujone levels were pretty low. Modern high thujone absinthes aren't any more psychoactive, but they are a hell of a lot more bitter then traditional absinthes. High thujone is just a marketing ploy. Large quantities of wormwood aren't psychoactive, and I have personally taken several grams at a time of the stuff, with no psychoactive effects."
Here are some cool sites about/and that sell absinthe...

I had Lucid at an English pub on Friday. The after effect was a really nice euphoric buzz. Never had that kind of buzz from liquor before...
Re: absinthe
if you drink it properly, its great. do the sugar cube burned over top, then mix it in with some water. the water dilutes it to a tolerable alcohol concentration, and the carmelized sugar adds a nice flavor to it. done in the right way, its good stuff!

Agree with you on that - a good barman will do it properly - The stuff we get over here is about 45%.:D
Re: absinthe

let me rephrase that: highly alcoholic beverages are just fine, i just chose to pull off some ridiculous shit while guzzling it. heh.
wormwood is a fine herb. perhaps i should take some hemlock or wolfsbane though.

Re: absinthe
go online or to your local head shops and by an absinthe kit :)
Re: absinthe
Its a waste of your money. The stuff in the states that is. Not the real stuff doesn't do anything other then taste like gasoline and mint.
Re: absinthe
^ so how do you know what Gasoline tastes like? I've smelled Gasoline before but this stuff doesn't smell like gas, it smells like Black Licorice.
Re: absinthe
I envision gasoline tasting like absinthe. Saying absinthe tastes like black licorice is puting it lightly. Black licorice doesn't burn your throat going down and is not flamable. Sorry to disagree with you but absinthe tastes like crap unless you water it down. If it is legal to buy in the states don't buy it. Its a waste of your money and will just get you drunk.
Re: absinthe
^^It's a damn good drunk though!
Re: absinthe
yeah i am curious to experience the real thing in Holland. the stuff here blows too!

Pick a country....
Re: absinthe
I'm drinking some of the "shitty" stuff right now....
Le Tourment Vert.... I bought it, then read the reviews on how no one should buy it because it sucks.....Anyhow, the buzz from a glass or two of this shit is pretty hardcore...It doesn't contain nearly as much thujone as the European brands though..

hype! now i know that brand is ok. LOL..... good field work bro.
Re: absinthe
Absinthe rules.
It doesnt give you any more of a hangover than other booze does (well, i cant vouch for the immitation absinthes, but the real stuff is fine)
this stuff is readily available in Ibiza (its distilled there)

Many fond memories of drinking this stuff on the white isle, especially at the mtv party in 2000 when underworld played. Was proper wrecked :D
If anyone is going back there soon, pick me up a bottle please
Re: absinthe
it's funny how it's more of a white color but these companies put dye into the drink to make it look green. Gotta have that whole Green Fairly thing going on to make it seem cooler than it is.
Re: absinthe
The good stuff should be the color of light olive oil, but when cold water is added, it turns cloudy white.
Re: absinthe
Just bought some of the Lucid. This stuff has a very strong distinct taste, and turns milky white. A bit of an oily texture to it. Gets you fucked up though! :)
I just woke up from what was suppose to be a quick nap.....3 hours later....One glass of this shit knocked me out.....LOL
Re: absinthe
I drank about 3/4 of a bottle many years ago. That was a pretty insane night, which I can recall everything. At least I did not cut my ear off like Van Gogh. Plus it was the real shit from the Czech Republic hehe
Re: absinthe
^ i cant remember much of the night i drank this stuff too!
but i definitely went a bit weird!!!
Re: absinthe
A local liquor store near me is selling Lucid gift sets for $59.00 and includes two absinthe glasses, absinthe spoon, and one bottle of Lucid Absinthe.
Just picked a set up. Great deal.

Re: absinthe
All you would want to know about absinthe in the US here: http://www.wormwoodsociety.org/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1
Had some yesterday at a wine tasting party. It's definitely dangerous at 120+ proof it tastes like it has the alcohol content of a white whine. I have no hangover to speak of, but then again I only had 3 shots worth. I did have some pretty interesting dreams though last night actually
Evidently Absinthe is one of the only 100% organic alcohols out there, and the hangover is supposed to be minimal...then again that could all be marketing bs, because again this was a wine tasting party, so the vendors were there talking about their product.
Overall I would definitely recommend it. I frankly forget the name of the absinthe I had, but it tasted far better than alcohol's with 1/2 the alcohol content. There was a bit of a licorice taste, but it wasn't strong, and NOTHING like jager's over-powering aroma and taste.
