Ok, so I am not the most dedicated listener, I leave, come back hoping to feel that rush I first had finding a local college station that was doing some, house, techno, Trance, Trip-Hop, electronic, industrial stuff and was total rolling with it. I soon started calling to find out more about what they were playing and some how some way discovered GU013 Ibiza. Whoa! I was hooked and whom else did this fine label have to offer damn John Digweed, Danny Tenaglia (come on now GU010 Athens was dark and sexy, Miss Kitten-Frank Sinatra), Dave Seaman, Hernan Catteneo, Tony DeVit, Nick Warren, etc. An open velvety music absorbing you and made you feel something deep, rhythmic. Damn good stuff is what I am trying to say. Lately though I am not seeing the direction. Don't get me wrong, I love to listen to it, the newer Danny is ok, the Steve Lawler Viva Toronto has moments but I am just not feeling that same primal beat that moved my soul, made me think about the mood the DJ is mixing, where it starts and where it leads you through doors and canyons. Delta Heavy Tour, Live at the Crobar, my only two shows, shame, shame, especially now that I am in NYC. There is more ground breaking going on then I am aware. So, my constant reader, those who are wondering if I am serious, guide me, point to someone on the edge, pushing to the next step. I will listen and appreciate the feedback. Thanks for the reply.

Where is this music progressing?
Re: Where is this music progressing?
I hear ya. Just like the rest of the music Genre's out there, the easier the average non musically inclined people can get their hands on production software etc, the more trash you have to sift through. There is still some awesome stuff being produced but you really have to look. As for Sets, by well known DJ's; they too leave a little to be desired any more, but I am not quite sure what to accredit this too really. I like to give not so wellknow Dj's a chance also, but I am not totally impressed like I was a few years ago. everytime one sees the light of day, they are dubbed "the next biggest, or the saviour of etc," but I don't hear it. And the direction things have taken so far isn't really my taste, with all of the minimal and the melodyless techno, but thats just me . I just look for stuff that is my taste,(which takes time), and spin that, while throwing in some older classics. You gott ado what you gotta do.

Is it that time again for the forum?

Maybe. I love what Diggers is playing again, so that's all that matters to me. :D
Re: Where is this music progressing?
I stopped fretting over the music and quit reminiscing about the old stuff or bitch about the new stuff. It's just music. If it's good, great. If it's boring, into the bin it goes. There's always more music out there. (And I'd never have said this back in the day when I was leeching music on a 36.6k modem!)

Yes it is!!! :D
All together now! Say it with me:
"The music these days, it sucks. Not like back in MY DAY when I first got into the scene. I heard those beats on Warren's Renaissance 1 back in 1972, man those loose hi hats, full snares, and predictable trancy melodies really hit the spot. Nowadays, it's all just blippy nonsense! The music is going STRAIGHT TO HELL, DAMMIT"
There. I just saved us about twenty posts in this thread.
Re: Where is this music progressing?

Re: Where is this music progressing?
Can I just say I HATE MINIMAL!!!
Actually I'm feeling really happy about music at the moment!! But I'm not going out much!!
Re: Where is this music progressing?
Well, this is a tired old discussion, but for the record I´ll say that I´ve actually been finding a lot of great stuff out there which is more melodic and proggy, I really think we´re seeing a moment where melody and groove are making a comeback, and it´s no wonder that for me Diggers and Sasha are in their finest form since the beginning of the decade, IMO.
I don´t dislike minimal, but I do dislike the fact that it´s given a lot of talentless people an excuse to put out music.
BTW, if you don´t know about him, can I just recommend Marcel Dettmann? Check him out for some awesome minimal/techno done right.

Re: Where is this music progressing?
How about some deep dark banging minimal that is really progressive with a little bit of acid funk mixed in with some break beat down tempo jump up!
On the topic of music. It's all good. Really...It is. I listen to a lot of music. Mostly crap! I think to myself. Damn this is some crap load of crap I just sifted through to find these tracks and it makes me appreciate the old days even more. The people that I grew up around played such kick ass music and was blessed to have had people around me that played stomp'n shit. The music is out there.
That sound/feeling you are looking for is still out there.
Try M-Cast. Steve James..Mercury Sessions.. His new one recorded at FSM headquarters Pensacola will blow your socks off. I was there. I had to go and hide from all the banging wicked shit. absolutely awesome display of talent and love for the music. I have not seen some one play like that since back in the good ole days of Simons.
Also...Hafid Atzel FSM on M-Cast. Great music. Track selection top notch.
Re: Where is this music progressing?
My guess is that it will still have some sort of 4/4 beat in the range of 120-130 bpm. ;)
Re: Where is this music progressing?
I like the way the music is today...Deep house and tech house is where it's at for me. Minimal....Not so much into anymore.

besides NE being utterly amazing i think it somewhat goes back to the fact that those tracks at that time were unavailable to the everyday punter, being unatainable added to the mystique of the mixes, same with the early GU's.. now within weeks of a mix cd being released or sometimes even before its released, the tracks are all over the web
Re: Where is this music progressing?
Its getting harder and harder to find good tracks because there is so much out there (a lot of it crap), and IMO many of the tracks are in wrong classifications on sites like beatport (eg, too many trance tracks in the progressive section) but overall the quality of the good tracks are exceptional. I love the dark proggy, chugging stuff, with some techno thrown in (some minimal, banging at the right moments).
Many of the sets from our MCAST dj's that I've heard over the last few months have been incredibly good!
Re: Where is this music progressing?
Things seem to be edging away from minimal to having a melody ... but the dark heavy beats aren't back yet - drum tracks still seem to be set at wimpy.

Totally, which sucks because once you've heard a track, you've heard it all. And unless you DJ or really appreciate how a set is put together, a good track that gets picked up all over the net and appears in every set begins to sound like shit because 1) it's everywhere, 2) it's in the wrong place in a set. It's like a Bryan Adams song.
At the same time, if a well-known DJ plays a type of sound, again, it gets picked up all over the net and with the ease of getting tracks these days, we get a whole bandwagon of the same sounds.
Damn it I thought I've given up bitching about music. :|
Re: Where is this music progressing?
Been listening to the Boscarino + Mohrr set for two days. I think it's a good mix of prog and 'minimal' sounds. Please check it out. And tell me what order the files should be in :p

Yes they have been really good.
I've been a bit away from the promos section/mcast for the past two-three years. Got a bit bored with things. Time traveled back about 30-40yrs to see what I'd neglected. Now I'm back to listening to sets. Take a break man- you need one. Or at least cut it with some other forms of music. I listened to prog sets almost exclusively for probably 5yrs. There is far too much good music out there to be monogamous.
Routine/repetition=boredom

quoted for truth.
in addition to that, i probe for old and new school prog/breaks that spiral on the weekly, but quality prog has become scare in distinction to most of the crapola/diluted " linear progressive" these days. imho.
