Here's the BBC's story: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/tv_and_radio/3955289.stm

Very sad news. I wasn't a regular listener of the show, being in Canada, but I always enjoyed bootlegs of Peel Sessions and the occasional stream off the BBC site.

damn! a radio broadcaster for 40 years?! that is nuts. i've never heard of him, but thoughts and prayers go to his family. that sucks. :(

Re: John Peel

It's really sad news. The man, without a shadow of a doubt, was an absolute legend.

I know there's a large US following here so you may not have had chance to listen to show (mind you, it had been going for near on 40 years). Go to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 and listen to some of the stuff he used to play.

I don't think we will EVER see another radio DJ like him.

RIP Peel, you'll be missed

RIP to John, a true legend :(

#287819Post 8 of 29

thats such bad news...my thoughts to his family

#287839Post 9 of 29

That's awful.... He was the last radio DJ that truly pushed things forward. Nowhere else could you hear the diversity of music that you got on his show - some of what he played I'd hate, but I'd still listen to him because he educated me... The world has lost the greatest lover of music this generation has ever seen.

RIP

A truely honest, inteligent, funny and passionate man who will be missed by many people.

May god rest his soul.

#287940Post 12 of 29

I've just caught the news and its a great shame. I didn't listen to his show often, but he played such a wide diversity of music, really pushed new talent and came across as such a genuine person that I think he will really missed. I always remember getting my first taste of DJ Cheese many years ago on his show, played back to back with some rock band. Truly remarkable.

John Peel - RIP

#287980Post 13 of 29

Didn't hear his show. But i have a few bands that were on his program. His diversity in his show is was separated him from the rest....

RIP

#288000Post 14 of 29

i never listened to any rips from that show on a regular basis. butdamn thats a bummer. :( r.i.p.

Sad news... RIP..........

#288051Post 16 of 29

an absolute broadcasting legend...and one of the absolute few remaining radio hosts who would push the most obscure of stuff because he truly believed it had to be heard...

Re: John Peel

R.I.P John Peel You will be missed

#288099Post 18 of 29

never heard of him... radio 1's longest serving dj wow! RIP

#288115Post 19 of 29

Peel mixed Fabriclive 7 if anyone wants to check his "style"

the amount of genres he helped push in the "mainstream" is unbelievable, the man did more for music in the last 40 years than most, thats for damn sure

#288128Post 20 of 29

don't be sad. be happy. his life is being celebrated.

and radio 1 are currently playing his old shows. i sure hope the rippers are doing their bit ;)

#288138Post 21 of 29

hell yea, someone needs to rip that tribute show! anyone that loves music should celebrate john peel's life, but it is still sad to see him go.

i came home from work today, and listened to his fabriclive cd, class act

Re: John Peel

He wasn't the best DJ... but in radio terms a DJ is just someone who plays music, not really anything about mixing. And in those terms he was one of the best. He exposed people to allll kinds of music they never would have heard unless he was working at Radio 1. Props to him for all the hard work and talent he's exposed in the last 40 years. Best wishes to his family and may he R.I.P.

And do you know what track he wants played at his funeral

The Undertones - Teenage Kicks.

He was the first dj to play this track and he liked it so much he played it 3 times on the trot. Top man

Its like youve lost a friend you never knew, if you know what i mean. Sad sad day.

#288167Post 24 of 29
and he liked it so much he played it 3 times on the trot.
:ROFLMAO: Classic Peel Moment!! He was always doing things like that - you got the feeling he didn't care about putting on a pro radio show or doing things properly - he was just there to have a laugh and play his favourite music! Good thing his music taste was always lightyears ahead of anyone else! :Respect:

I remember a moment he came to the end of a track and said "I was enjoying that track so much, I completely forgot to cue up the next record - oh well, I'll just keep talking until I this next record gets into the right place...." His shows were full of moments like that!

I'm now gonna go and listen to some darkcore jungle played at the wrong speed followed by some hillbilly banjo music - it's what he would have wanted

Re: John Peel

^^ So true, I grew up listening to Johns show, he had such a reassuring voice and was very light hearted. playing the records he liked and wanted to share. The word legend is over used but i know it applies to him, I will miss tuning in and listening to the wacky mix of tracks he'd play.

He will be missed.
