DJs who DON'T really DJ

in light of recent events, i must say that i have seen DJs on more then one occasion who acted as though the've been DJing (mixing, laying down fresh vinyl, finding the start point, etc) when in fact i would have sworn they were either playing a commercial CD or pre-recorded CD. their actions did not match their music.

is this a common occurance? has anyone else experienced this at a large club venue?

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

I've seen Oakenfold do that. He wouldn't even mix songs, hw would just play one record and then once it quit, put on another record and do a "jesus" pose.

Not saying he's a bad DJ, he might have been on some drugs or something that night. :Naughty:

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

DJ Scribble got busted for pulling a stunt like that maybe a year or two ago.

#287422Post 4 of 62

I've known some people to make claims like that against DJs but its usually been that they have no fucking idea what they're talking about

#287432Post 5 of 62

Oakenfold has been known to play DAT's during a set...

Jonathan Peters got busted before for playing a mix CD and "pretending" to mix...

and I'm sure there are others out there as well.

Hey I've no problem if a DJ wants to drop 2 tracks off of a mix CD; some big names have done it before (because the CD is that good)...just don't "pretend" to mix while it' splaying or play half the damn thing!

Koop, when playing Puffin the Herb by Karl Gunton

#287498Post 8 of 62

I like pretending to scratch when the scratches are actually on the record.

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

I really don't want to admit this...but back in the day when darude came out with the sandstorm...he played in TO....man it was so bad...you could still hear the 2 tracks layering in, and he takes off the record before it is even finished mixing...and it is still being layed while the record is off...

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

it was rumoured that bad boy bill played one of his "in the box" cds at turbo in toronto.

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

you could say that any dj that uses ableton does this to some degree

#288367Post 17 of 62

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

i ve heard djs opening shows with the first tracks from mix cds(first 2 tracks from steve lawler lights out), but its nothing compare to going to a club and durring the show to hear a essentialmix gingle, really embarasing

#288466Post 18 of 62

no, i concur that bbb sux.

#288507Post 19 of 62

well, looking back, i will say that BBB's global house culture CD was a crazy CD that got me hooked on the EDM scene (circa 1995). :Honest:

haha thats why one hit wonders suck and shouldn't be wonders

that depends what they are doing with ableton. are they just using it to beat match? then thats lame. are they using it to a live PA act? then thats cool cuz ableton opens up doors you could not do or not do very well with vinyl

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

Nick Muir has done sets yet apparently cannot DJ, and doesn't BT just plug in a laptop and reel of the exact same set time after time? :Who:

the 1st time I saw BT do a non-live set, he had 1200's, and it was a bloody train wreck. The next time was all Ableton, and it was all his own tracks, minorly remixed. It wasnt too bad, but it was a BT Greatest hits show, so somewhat disappointing.

yeah bt is a bloody tool. i heard him do a promo set using ableton and he did not mix or anything, just played his lame ass songs over and over and used ableton to do weak effects ontop of the tracks.. not what i think ableton is used for

any of you remember his kissfm set a few months back? oh god.. the best is when he started saying 'your listening to BT.. live.. well not really live, cuz im playing off of john digweeds laptop'

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

I've seen Junkie XL do this during his "live" shows ... twice

Completely pre-recorded from start to finish. Absolute joke considering how much gets paid to jump about like a fucking 'tard.

#288789Post 30 of 62

a mate of mine in poland said he heard this techno dj.... really amazing mixing, lots of effects and quick track changes... perfect mixing... then ever 30mins or so theres be a massive trainwreak, then it would go back to being perfect. turns out he's mixing between mix cds and can't mix to save his live hence the trainwreaks :?

I have to agree....

How can you tell if a DJ is mixing or not unless ure standing directly behind him looking over his shoulders and listening into his headphones... im sure most of you dont know what the DJ is doing to begin with.

Re: DJs who DON'T really DJ

Lets see.... Dont know where to start with this one. Lets start with the funniest one.

Two years ago. Dj Irene. Im in the DJ booth with her. Shes pumping both fists in the air for at least 10 minutes while the tracks were mixed. Classic!!! Everyone in the crowd knew what was up.

Oakenfold....same thing. Was standing there, arms folded, looking down at the crowd while a new track came in.

Bad Boy Nutz... hahaha guy was too lit to even talk/

DJ Rap... had to put ON a CD cuz she was too drunk and kept t/w'ing lol

And yes, BT does plug in his Apple and do his thang...but so does PVD

#289101Post 39 of 62

Saw darude in London, ON.

The guy was clearly playing a CD. It was hilarious.

Just to give the guy a little credit, I was watching closely, and at the end of the night I think he actually played a couple of records, but overall the whole mix was a farce.

:(

That doesnt count, you should allowed one or two of those a year.
