New bigscreen TV?

I'm thinking about buying a new big-screen TV... I've been looking around, and the best-priced tv I can find is a Phillips Magnavox 51" Widescree/HDTV-enabled at Walmart for $1k. Saw it at Best Buy for $100 more. Read Best Buy's reviews, and nobody had a complaint about it.

I bought a 30" Magnavox from Walmart about 6 years ago and it still works like a champ... anybody have any recommendations on this make/model/idea? Buy it? Don't?

I wouldn't purchase a television of that size for a grand. I would purchase a smaller toshiba 16:9 hdtv for around the same price. Sure that thing is huge for the price but its got 10watts of audio and its rear projection

#283989Post 3 of 17

yeah, the rear projection thing I'm not too fond of, but that's been pretty active technology for a while now. and who really uses their tv speakers, anyways? :) My roommate and I have two subs connected to our stereo, which is connected to the TV... we use it all the time. Just seems like I need more inchage.

well shit.... if it suits all your needs who am I to comment on what you should get :)

I'd say if you don't mind the rear projection and have an audio solution go for it!

I've been looking in the paper on and off for a while, but I'm a little scared to buy some electronics used from another person. The cheapest I've seen in the paper is like $700, too.

And I definitely wouldn't say I "need" it... but I sure do "want" it. I don't have anything else to spend my money on, and since I graduated from college a year ago I've definitely got a little to spend on something like this

i wouldn't buy anything used from another person. mostly because you don't get any support if you ever need it.

Re: New bigscreen TV?

that would not be my choice due to the fact that it must weigh a ton. go for somethng on the lite side like a plasma. from my point of view i have to move two 21' and one 19' moniter with a 27' tv, moving all that stuff around gets heavy. Now i am going to buy a big screen tv that weighs 300+ pounds? no way, i would be looking at plasma tv's only. but this is just my situation not yours

Re: New bigscreen TV?

I saw some really nice wall mount flat screens at Circuit City a few weeks ago...a nice one goes for about $1,800.

Rear projection has a bad rap and all...but since they've been around for awhile, they've improved dramaticallly from when they first came out. If your interested in a rear projector type, look at the Hitachi.

The picture quality is great...

besides, it's not like your going to pay and arm and a leg to get one...

either way, you gotta get something big! :Bingo:

do a search, there is a lengthly TV thread around here somewhere.

two pieces of advice...

  1. Go HD.

  2. If you're going projection, get the smallest projection you can, usually around the 40-48" range. The smaller the projection tele, the brighter the pic.

i picked up a Mitsubishi 42" HD widescreen a,d i fucking love it. Rear projection has come a long way, especially with HD.

I wouldn't buy a magnavox.

brands i'd consider...

Samsung (DLP is the fucking BIZ!!!) Mitsubishi Pioneer ($$) Sony (as much as i hate this company, they have reasonably priced HD widescreens with nice options for a decent price...hard to ignore that.)

Phillips, not a bad choice i guess, i just never even gave them a chance, because it's...phillips. dunno why.

GO SOX!!! Plasma is he only way to go... BTW - which is BETTER: Plasma or LCD? I am aware that they are completely different technologies but will bem oving soon and nee a new tube

i watch on my 14" tv in my room... got a 30" for the main room last year...

why bigger? r u blind? :P

Re: New bigscreen TV?

bigger is better! How can u watch a widescreen movie on a 14" tele r u an action man?

Plasma is best, prices nearly down to a ?1000

lcd hasnt got the colour

rear projection to bulky and u can only c the screen if your sat at the right angle

 [/quote] Honestly, I think I'm trying to prepare for San Andreas.

But also, I want a bigger TV. My 30" is nice, but a 50" would be nicer. I went to walmart earlier and checked out the TV I was looking at, but the picture quality didn't seem right at all. I still want to buy one, but I don't know if I'm going to go for that make/model.

Re: New bigscreen TV?

I don't care for that Magnavox big screen in the first post. Too big and I don't like rear projection anything.

I bought a Samsung 32 HDTV LCD flat panel this week and really enjoying it. Watching lots of sports and Discovery HDTV the last few days.

I nearly bought a plasma, but I have a friend that installs theater systems and he told me to stay away from plasma unless I want to replace it in 2-3 years. But, he said that I would love the plasma tv at first until later on when the colors fade. So, that's why I went the LCD route.

If you do get something, make sure it's HDTV ready at least, has a DVI input, and if possible a HDMI input. Starting to learn more about this HDTV lingo recently.

Just don't be alarmed when special forces crash into your house because the TV set is sending out some kind of stress signal... :P

Re: New bigscreen TV?

the best things to consider are resolution and the right size for the viewing distance.
