Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

I'm specifically referring to the period from about 1995-2000 when the above 3 dj's were playing the same style of music (and oakey was up there as one of the best dj's on the planet).

I have always wondered - do you think S&D get on with Oakie? I remember listening to sets from that period, and S&D never seemed to play any tracks from Oakey and vice versa. I mean, I have never seen a set from Oakey with Xpander or Heaven Scent in? They were the two biggest tracks from 1999 - you would think he would have played them?

There are exceptions of course - Grace 'Not Over Yet' as an example.

Anyone have any stories about S&D and Oakie's relationship?

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

Oakenfold used to play Sasha - Arkham Asylum and Be As One. Oakenfold also was the guest DJ at the very first Bedrock at Heaven in 1998. Sasha & Digweed played plenty of Perfecto records in the mid 90's. I cant imagine they like what Oakenfold plays now, but i doubt the is any rivalry

Sasha also did some remixes for Perfecto.

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

There was definately more common ground with the Quivver and Breeder stuff back then .. they probably just played different clubs - Oakey was all about his Cream and Home residencies, Sasha and Diggers were all about Twilo.

Paths did cross at Cream but always in different rooms ... I'd also imagine S & D not wanting to follow on after a Courtyard set.

Interestingly Sasha has nothing to do with Carl Cox, whereas Oakey gave Carl his 1st break and Diggers always plays Carl's ibiza shows because their paths crossed in the 90's. Maybe in the UK relations with Pete Tong's are also a factor.

Remember - in terms of Sasha he had a major rep for unreliability around this time and that may have effected relations with other DJ's i.e. only Diggers put up with it !

Cox and Digweed share an agent (who's name escapes me atm) as well, so most likely Carl gets the discount! =)

if he tries to cuddle me i,ll kill him

i was thinking about this last night ( no not that me and huggie are pink )

with regards to oakenfold, people have said some pretty harsh things about him over the years including myself, my reason was that he went all comercial when i'd been brought up in a way to think that comercialism is bad ( in ways i still do think it is bad ) and of course he "sold out" but if u sit down and think about it he was probibly one of the most old school people in the buisness, he's been there right from the start like pete tong and various other people, i have a book which has pictures of him in the acid house days etc....just kind of realised this last night :|

doesnt mean that u will respect him better personally but in the buisness i guess he's just another tenaglia as most of the people in the game will look @ him with so much respect because in the days he was probibly one of the guys that everyone looked up to.

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

Agree with Red1. Can't agree with the road Oakie has gone down but can't deny he's a true pioneer in the industry. I think the smell of money took him away from the quality of music.

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

^^ yup.

after all, he was responsible for a few mind blowing mixes goa two great GU's the cream double cd resident tranceport perfecto flouro cd's were pretty good imo.

after that... i dunno, nothing ever drew me in. i felt like he was trying to beat me with hit songs.

Once he did that song with Crazytown it was the final nail in the coffin. And then Brittany Murphy........WTF?

yep... Another Wold is also a really great compilation on its own.

as for their 'relationship' i really doubt with the constant globe trotting all these DJ's do that they have any time for arguing or bad beef.

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

I guess I'm just intrigued as to what S&D think of Oakie. You read interviews with S&D and they always tend to namedrop people like Tenaglia and PvD but never Oakie. The same goes when Oakie is interviewed. I have always wondered if there was a rivalry, but I guess there isn't.

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

Yeah but Sasha was asked in Mixmag when Oakenfold's Biography came out, if he planned on doing one. He replies that its something you do when your carrier is over

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

it's sad to see him get drunk on his success. it's like watching a car crash in slow motion. or was that train wreck...

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

The StateSide series Oakie did weren't bad. I think most were very very different from his normal cheese trance bullit in the gun crap. I think he dove into something different for that.

Re: Sasha, John Digweed and Paul Oakenfold?

Don't suppose you've got any of the State Side/Party 93.1 sets ? The 2002 sets in particular look really good from the tracklists.
