This is the beach where I live. I haven't been to the beach in few years, and one of the reasons why is this....

Re: Anyone want to go surfing?

Those sharks are getting pretty bold. It seems most of the surfers there are comfortable with their presence.

Re: Anyone want to go surfing?

I surf up the coast in Sebastian or in Cocoa Beach (Patrick A.F. Base), in all the years I've frequented these 2 breaks I've never seen any sharks, but farther up the coastline (Daytona to Jax. Beach) there are many more dorsel fin sitings. I've heard of a couple surfers getting hit in New Smyrna near the Inlet.

I've never been bitten (thankfully) but I do work at the hospital that they bring the shark attack victims too and I can say there is a lot of them. The server room is next to the ER and it's always painful trying to get around when they bring them in! Every year it progressively gets worse here!

Re: Anyone want to go surfing?

so after all these shark attacks and the victims who follow why surfers still go there?

Re: Anyone want to go surfing?

been surfing and bodyboarding the california coast my whole life, and one vital acquisition i've absorbed from a few surfin legends is this... you have to be self forgetful and fearless in full. compulsive fear/worry eminates a most inviting vibe to get chomped on in the water. it may sound stupid, and it's no garentee, but it works in subtle ways.

if im overcome with fear, then i say out of the water and catch sum rays with the ladies.

I'm sure there are, we don't usually hear about them here (Miami Beach) in the news, maybe just an occasional attack, the couple I was referring to I had heard about from Spectrum Surf Shop down the coast in Melbourne.

Re: Anyone want to go surfing?
so after all these shark attacks and the victims who follow why surfers still go there?
Well that's a good question. Probably because of the waves and the thrill of catching them. You tend to forget about them while your having fun and there is no guarantee that your going to be the next victim. So why not take your chances.

The problem is that everyone already knows except for the people that come down from the north or up from the south. Those are the people that get bit.

Re: Anyone want to go surfing?

I live right on the beach in Jacksonville and surf quite a bit. There are more deaths from vending machines then there are from shark attacks. I'm tired of all this fear surrounding sharks. Incredible killing machines, but the odds of being attacked are incredibly low.

actually, the discovery that sharks leap out of the water (similar to dolphins) is very recent, simply because no one believed a shark had the strength to propel its own bodyweight to certain heights above the water. The first recently recorded were great whites (iirc the Discovery show I saw it on said they were off Western Australia).

So sharks leaping that way out of the water and that too so close to human habitat is pretty new I would say.
