What track would you give this title to?

For me, I would have to say Klf '3am eternal'

I think back to when this came out in 89. I was into some of the rap, pop, r&b thing. This track combined all of these things, as well as a lot of synth and electronic beat styles. I think it was one of the most eye opening tracks for me. Some runner up tunes would be Prodigy 'out of space' Orbital 'are we here' Captain Hollywood project 'more and more'

How bout yawl? ;)

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

i actually started listening to EDM by way of pretty cheesy trance which i can't bear to listen to now. then i got ahold of sander's nubreed and nick warren's budapest GU and started progressing to more underground. luckily i moved to atlanta and steve sorted me out real quick with proper underground. don't think there's a chance i'd ever stop listening to EDM now. thanks steve!

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

To tell you the truth where I grew up (Northeast Ohio) EDM was almost non existant. Seem liked all the clubs played 80's cheese music.....so i didnt even really hear EDM untill I moved to Florida and a coworker (djsinbox on ms) gave me copy of that 90's Sasha/Digweed Renaissance 3cd set to listen too.

I was instantly hooked and now almost listen exclusevly to EDM

Wow, blast from the past!

I was listening to a lot of synth-pop and synth-rock in the late 80's/early 90's -- stuff like New Order, Ministry, NIN, KMFDM, Front 242, MLWTTKK, Skinny Puppy, etc. Note sure exactly when I started to get in to EDM specifically because it was just sort of a natural transition to add EDM into the fold. It was probably something cheeseball like 2 Unlimited's "Twilight Zone," Human Resource's "Dominator," The Movement's "Jump," or LA Style's "James Brown is Dead." Tough to listen to that stuff now, but every now and again I'll pop in Praga Khan's "Injected With a Poison" or Apotheosis' "O Fortuna" for old time's sake. Lots of great memories associated with those tracks (which I'll spare you) :D.

+1. The stand out c.d that really got me into edm was Sasha and Digweeds Communicate c.d. I think my eyes popped out of my head when I heard that for the first time at a photographers studio. I ran out and got that c.d right after the job was done and the rest is history!!

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

Kraftwerk: Tour De France, Afrika Bambatta: Planet Rock/World Destruction, Art of Noise: Close to the Edit/Beatbox, could probably throw in Tom Tom Club: Genuis of Love, Malcom Maclaran's: Buffalo Gals, Egyptian Lover: Egyptian Lover, Detroit Techno, Chicago House, FSOL, The Orb, Aphex Twin, Banco De Gaia, Psykcik Warriors of Gaia, Wagon Christ, Sabres of Paradise, 808 State, Larry Levan, Steve Silk, Junior Vazquez Laurent Garnier, why not throw Madonna in as well if you mixed a dance track of her's back in the day it pretty much made you legit. New Order, DM, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, OMD, and so many others.

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

I Listened to alot of NIN back in the day.The first full on dance track for me was probably Robert Miles- Children. I had alot of the cheesie Compilations back in the day. MDMA mixed by Anthony Acid & DJ Scribble. I had and still have alot of the old Ministry of Sound "The Annuals" Ferry Corsten's Trance Nation's on MOS. Alot of Random mix compilations that I have no idea who mixed. Alot Of The Twisted Records.Basically all these got me into EDM. I also was into Brooklyn Bounce, La Bouche, Ice MC, alot of HI-NRG Trance.

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

Early Chemical Brothers or Prodigy is what got me listening to EDM....

BUT

The CD that made me start going crazy over it would have to be DJ Dan's - Loose Caboose.

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

George Kranz - Din Daa Daa (probably dating myself with this one)...but I started in this era early to mid 80's and never have seemed to have left it, just evolved as time went on into the different genres of electronic music. I was probably 12 or 13 and heard this and Kraftwerk (Numbers) around the same time.

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

I'm not sure where pop ended and EDM began ... when I was a kid I managed to miss out on all the Eurasure or Wham or New Order stuff, but listened to Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode a lot, so I guess that was my earliest brush with anything electronic. I think back then it was just 'dance music' or pop to me. SNAP? Rhythm is a dancer? And then Jam & Spoon. After that, the first proper EDM would've been some MOS comp mixed by Danny Rampling, and something random I picked up from HMV cos it had a nice paper cover/case. And then Underworld. It's also odd that I missed out on Leftfield in those days. Then Oakie's Perfecto Fluoro and Digweed's Winning Ticket, then Northern Exposure. I also missed out on S&D's Renaissance until a bit later. I only discovered Renaissance the same time Cream was putting out comps, so it's the era of Nick Warren, Ian Ossia, and Dave Seaman. Then the GUs of course.

So it's been a fairly natural progression from those electronic/synth pop days into more and more EDM.

The weirder thing is I had some small dalliance with bands like Guns n Roses or Nirvana or Bon Jovi but they never stuck on me. In fact I used to hate band music until recently when I decided / realised not as many people listen to EDM as I'd like to think! But before, in my world, EVERYONE (that I knew) listened to EDM. Until this indie uprising and all my friends are suddenly closet indie fans, traitors!

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

awesome replies, could've included many of the same responses in mine :)

it's really all about that starting point, but the beauty is, from there, you don't know where you'll end up! One day you will be disgusted with 'enter genre', and another you will be inspired by it. Just shows you gotta keep the ears and mind open at all times.

For me, as far as DJ music goes, I got into trance and d&b first. Spun trance for a little while, collected a bunch of classics. Moved onto progressive thanks to San Fran, Ibiza, and Hong Kong sessions. And further and farther it goes today, hopefully to no end.

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

it probably also bears mention that groups that I was already listening to, like Curve, Garbage & Sneaker Pimps, started having their stuff remixed by guys we all know, like PVD, Victor Calderone, AVH, Oakenfold, etc. I was already into house music at the time, but that is what got me back into it after the early 90's rave thing died down some (at least where I was).

Re: what track/s got you listening to Edm?

Man, we are going back a few years now but the one that really got me was kraftwerk - tour de france.

Very minimal sound and still believe it sounds pretty amazing even today.

Many of you might know the track. It's the one where Turbo from the movie Electric Boogaloo dances to with the broomstick.

The scene and track below. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVrWDPi12zE

Classic movie by the way. :p

it was always there, i just pointed it out, thank the artists for dropping mad flava on us.

as for me, no idea what my first one was. all i remember is my older sister taking me to a "rave" when they still existed in Florida, feeding me a smurf, and raving til dawn to tony faline. it was only a few months later i ventured to the uber rave ZEN and heard sasha, john digweed, rabbit in the moon, josh wink, keoki, and several others i dont remember that got me in to the amazing sound of progressive house. from that night on and those 10 beans later i was hooked. on the music not the beans.
