I know he is pretty unpopular these days but I wanted to share an email I just sent him. Pretty much explains my gripe. Is it unreasonable to expect a headliner to drop the first record before 3.45am? Regretting making the trip to NYC to hear him live. The night plain sucked. Enjoy if you have time:

Dear Mr. Tenaglia,

I attended your appearance at Pacha last night, and being a huge fan of yours for many years I wanted to send you an email. Your influence upon my taste in music has been very formative for so long that I have always been excited for any appearance I could see you at and I always jumped at the opportunity to buy one of your cds. I have also been priviledged to hear you in other countries than the US, with a particular fondness for one killer night out in Ibiza with you on the decks.

Maybe because I have aged a bit and I am now twenty-nine with the career and my first house, but unfortunately I am not able to go out as much anymore. Living in Boston, there isn't a huge EM scene here (with the very notable exception of Club Rise and the recent emphasis on The Estate). I still follow the scene pretty closely, I still buy a lot of music and hit the decks in my basement as much as possible. On occasion, about six times a year, I drag the wife to NYC for a night out to hear someone quality play for a long evening. I am sure many people from Boston and beyond due this much more often, but for me this is a bit of big deal and something that requires some monetary and time sacrifice. This is usually a very happy sacrifice to make, but last night's effort will really make me think before travelling any distance to hear you play again.

NYC clubbing is still alive. The mix of the ability to stay open late, fashion, youth and the stream of cultural consumerism allows quite a good night in NYC. There is nothing better than getting out of a club exhausted at 10am to the bright lights of the morning, struggling to get home with a cup of coffee and a bagel or a savory, greasy street meat smothered in peppers and onions. I totally understand setting the pace for a crowd to keep it going that long. And I totally understand a headliner not hitting the decks until late.

What I am a little unsure of is the headliner waiting to do so until 3.45am. That is just too late. My wife and I had enjoyed an excellent dinner, left the restaurant specifically to get to Pacha last night at 1am, and were really excited to hear you play again. What we got for a long, long time were two opening djs who surely did their best to keep the night going but really struggled. There was an awesome crowd at Pacha last night, people of all ages and backgrounds, it just looked like a prime night. But really, by 2-2.30am, the place starting to lose steam. All credit given to the openers, but they could not keep the place going in anticipation for a performance of a legendary headliner. By that time, I noted a lot of people leaving the club, and people were really buzzing about it looking like you cancelled your appearance. The place was far from dead, but clearly many of the people who left are not the "leaving-at-2am-types". I was close to giving up myself, I was a bit deflated to say the least and the ten dollars I was spending on each drink wasn't helping.

So when you arrived on the "stage" around 3am, it was more of a sense of relief than a sense of excitement. And yeah, you were funny with your hat and the crowd was amped. And so was I after you did your vocals for a bit over the openers' continued music. So we were expecting you to hit the decks to take the night to the next level. But for some reason it took you another 45 minutes to do so. I totally understand the build up of expectations, the excitement of it all, but it was lost again by the time you finally came on at 3.45am. A lot of people, including my wife and I, were just flat out tired. I decided to leave during your first song because I was so bummed and so tired of waiting to hear you play. The openers couldn't, and shouldn't be expected to, keep a good crowd hanging on until this long.

So basically, I made the trip to hear two decent openers play for about three hours. Nevermind the cost of transport, bad drinks, and lodging, what really sucked was losing a weekend, losing what could have been an excellent night out. You were pretty much, as I said, a legend to me for quite a while and your sense of professionalism really hurt that last night. For someone who does not get to come to NYC for a good night too often, this was a bit of a waste. I hope that you can consider this feedback for your future performances and your remaining fans.

And for someone who really admires you, who still supports the scene to the best that I can, I am just really disappointed that I spent a weekend in NYC to have such a short and deflating night.

I really wish you the best and hope you can see this feedback as coming from someone who wants to see you succeed because of all of the good you have done for those of us who still seek a night to forget about humanity's unnecessary contingencies and seek something real in a night of good music and fun.

Take care,

Chad Boston, MA

when i saw him at arc, he didn't play until 3am. i think its par for the course, but i understand your frustration.

Re: Danny Tenaglia is a total D-bag

Aren't these things like start time, end time, or duration, written into his contracts every gig? I can't believe a club or organizer would spend a bunch of money to bring in a DJ and he does fuck all the whole night until 345am! He's started fairly on time at about 1am when he plays here, till the morning too.

Re: Danny Tenaglia is a total D-bag

Get'em Chad, it really is pretty fucked up that he waited that long to start playing. If it was supposed to be a late night, you and everyone else attending should have been informed so you could schedule around it.

Same happened to me, but even later. I believe it was the last or second to last Arc night, one of the Low End Specialists warmed up until 4:30 am, which is when Danny decided to take over. I could only stay around for another hour and was a annoyed that I was only able to catch a small portion of his set, which I hear ended up going until noon. No offense Chad, but I think you summed it up in your email. You were out with your wife and youre getting old. I am the same age and find myself in the same situation often, that it feels late when the headliner starts. However, if it were 10 years ago and you were single, your ass would of been out tearing up the floor. You also have to give Danny credit that he is the age he is and can still play massively long sets and the thought of it being too late never crosses his mind. Thats what makes him the madman he his. Sorry dude, but I dont feel Danny owes you an apology. Since when has the party scene catered to people who want to go home and go to bed before the sun comes up?

I suggest you all focus on seeing other DJs who play better music :p

I actually agree with you about him being awesome for playing long sets and not expecting to go home before the sun comes back up. That is exactly why we made the trip hear him out, to have a killer long night. But if you are stuck a bit listening to a pair of, to be honest, very mediocre openers, for about three hours, you are in no way going to be juiced for another ten, let alone two hours. A night has to be built and I think showing up for a set that late just wastes a lot of opportunity to do so.

Re: Danny Tenaglia is a total D-bag

Just out of curiosity, aren't these things such as time slots etc usually up to the promoter or whoever is throwing the event?

I dunno, I'm sure Danny can play whenever he feels like it though.

Next time I guess just go to bed early and wake up around 4 to catch his set. Perfect way to wake up imo. I wish I'd done this in Miami lol

it's not a rave, buddy. it's a proper club. that's the difference. if the 'party' scene held back headline dj's to the early hours of the morning, fewer people would go out, with the exception being ibiza.

would your assertion be true for other forums of music?

Imagine if doors open to a radiohead concert at 10pm, and they don't come on till 3:30am.

you would be pissed, too, no?

I think there is an implied expectation, unless explicitly stated otherwise, that the headline dj should come on at a reasonable hour. Or else, what would stop Tenaglia from waiting till 9am to come on???

Re: Danny Tenaglia is a total D-bag

Yeah i saw him at Arc, he didn't come on till 3am. But the club didn't open till midnight, so i expected that. What i didn't like was the place didn't serve alcohol. Being on holiday picking up drugs wasn't easy either. So No Drugs, No Booze, there wasn't even much pussy either. I stayed for 2 hours but he was playing Garage, so we called it a night. What i should of done was go to bed, get up early and then hit the club. I would of struggled with on booze though. Danny rants about Being Yourself, but i am myself with A drink in my hand, a bird on each arm, some charlie up me nose and a few pills with polish the night off. Danny is seriously deluding himself if he thinks drugs don't play a big part in music.

Yeah Sasha didn't come on at Ministry Of Sound till about 3:45 either. Pretty annoying when you know he was already in the country the night before.

Re: Danny Tenaglia is a total D-bag

Cracking e-mail ... this is becoming a bit more of an issue these days (particulary with lack of decent bills/upcoming warm up dj's).

Sasha played 2.00 til 5.00 last week .. but even that's too late, particularly on a weekday (and i incl. Friday in that, as I'd done a days work). By 4.00 people were leaving and the bar wasn't doing any business. So I can't see the sense in having the headliner close (unless you are on holiday in ibiza, brazil, argentina, Punto del este etc.).

Even Carl Cox starts his nights off at 11.00 in ibiza - which draws in the crowd before a headline support Dj plays and Carl re-appears at 3.00. At least you can get 2-hours of Coxy (plus 3 hours of e.g. Digweed, Deep Dish, or Fatboy Slim etc.) and leave at 4.00 if you're knackered (Carl goes on til 8.00).

In 2003 at Heaven, Hernan opened at 11.00 and Oakey played 1.00 til 3.30. Then some other dj did the graveyard slot for anyone that was simply too high to go home.

Yeah saw Tenaglia last year when he played a 8 hr set which started at 10am but it was just fifteen minute track after the next, nothing really inspiring. It is tough to rally till 6am or later.

32 is old dude... you aren't seeing alzheimer's signs yet, old man? :D

its a struggle for me to even make it to 3:45am much less see someone open at 3:45am. that is why i am glad for the most part, the clubs here in atlanta mandate an early starting time because the clubs have to close 3-4ish.

Digweed usually starts at Fabric around that time... finished around 8am....

lol.. no it has nothing to do with what time he starts, i dont care about that.. you go to a massive club you expect to be out until 6am or so

but because of his stupid rants, most recently about him crying over his set being recorded sometime late last year at a club in italy.. just a fat whiny big girls blouse.
