Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
"philfunkyness, Apr 27, 2006 For me this album is one of the definitve soundtracks to my life, and has been since I first heard it all those years ago. It sits alongside Leftfields 'Leftism' and Massive's 'Blue Lines' in its status as a benchmark for electronic music when it was released, achieving cult status in drum 'n bass circles and beyond. It seems as though every track has been carefully selected at great pains to ensure the quality never lets up at any given point, and it's one of those albums where everyone has their own favourite track rather than there being one stand-out anthem that everyone adores.
The first disc is an unmixed studio selection, each track a classic in its own right. From Bukem's seminal 'Demon's Theme' through PFM's beautiful 'Danny's Song' (a tribute to LTJ Bukem) and finishing up with Bukem's 'Horizons' (with every other song in between on a par with these), it is just purely a joy to listen to, and you'll find yourself not wanting to skip tracks along the way!
Disc two is a mixed set from the man himself, LTJ Bukem. I won't bother to break down this cd into its tracks, just trust me that it is a journey that everyone should take. It's so good that even near the end, when one of the tracks begins to jump (a real vinyl mix here folks) instead of detracting from the quality of the mix, it just serves to enhance it and give it that raw, underground quality not to be found on any mix cd released today.
To put into a simple sentence, this is one of the finest albums ever created in my eyes, and will be til the end of time. Astounding."
Well going by what he said this sounds like a must have.. Sounds like a drum and Bass Equivalent of Prog's Nothern Exposure.. Will get it during the week. cheers for the info. Any others??
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
ltj bukem is the godfather of intelligent, melodic drum n bass...heck, pick up all of his progression sessions. get Klute's "No one is listening anymore".
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
If you like the heavy jump up d&b get hold of Andy C's nighlife mixes volumes 1-4, straight up club mixes from the daddy :)
That marcus intalex fabric mix is indeed great - really intelligent stuff.
Check out the promos forum (called the grid) on www.dogsonacid.com for some homegrown uk up and coming talent :)

I need to definitely buy some of those, do you have any that stand out that I should check out first, I only have the disc I mentioned above (just put it on too...ahh still good stuff). Plus I got it in the cut out bin at one of those crappy Karma records barely used for like $4!
Also alot of people cite this as a classic:
Roni Size - New Forms http://www.discogs.com/release/12110
Can't say I listen to it as much as the Bukem disc above but many still like it a bunch.
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
Adam F - Circles should be the first album you should buy. I would follow up with Photek's first album (which I can't spell), and then any LTJ bukem cd you canfind.
I DEFO second resonantor's Roni Size "new forms" cd.
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
Adam F - Circles seconded!
Also check out High Contrast's Essential Mixes - particularly the first one he did in 2003.
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
Bukem has new mix cd and DVD coming out next month.
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
drum'n'bass is kool, i think the height of its popularity, round 98-02 in my area was when all the sick tracks came out. i saw it loose momentum bigtime after that... there's still kool stuff being put out, but it was interesting to see that it kinda died down. I always liked the music, but saw it coming that i'd grow out of it so i always stuck to buying house vinyls cause i knew i would never grow out of that. LOL

Pat Foosheen used to be into some really chill dnb. always dug his stuff. you'll definitely enjoy this.
also, High contrast, his most recent mix (2007?/8?) is the better one...the older one in 2003 was ok.

Potentially the best album ever. Ive been listening to Bukem since I was about 14 (urgh thats 14 years ago now) and pretty much every cd he has ever done has been superb. I would particuarly recommend the yellow Journey Inwards and Progression sessions one from America) My first ever bean was done sitting in a field on a summers eve and I had a bukem tape in my walkman. All my other mates didnt like it coz was too chilled so I just sat there in total bliss listening to it over and over. :D
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
i also have the journey inwards cd and it is great stuff. nice chilled out jazzy stuff. if you like kruder and dorfmeister you will like that cd.
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
^^ speaking of, K&D did some good chill drum n bass back in the day, too... Conversions is all drum n bass and parts of their DJ Kicks cd was too...great mix
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
^^ Yes good stuff. The K+D sessions is still my fav though, one of my top cds ever, that mix is phenomenal.
Re: I am really getting into Drum & Bass
Roni Size/Reprazent's New Forms was a benchmark for not just the drum 'n' bass genre that it leapt from, but for all types of electronic music.
Released a decade ago in 1997, the album's title was apt with a sound that surpassed any previous drum 'n' bass efforts and brought the genre to a whole new audience. After catapulting its creators to music's top table, the crowning achievement was winning the Mercury Prize in the same year, beating the likes of Radiohead, Primal Scream and two of Size's dance music peers, Chemical Brothers and Prodigy.
To mark this anniversary, Roni Size has returned to re-edit New Forms. "The first generation of heads who were there with the rise of Reprazent & Roni Size will be able to reminisce over the last decade with the classics Brown Paper Bag, Share The Fall & Heroes. The generation of those who missed it will be able to appreciate the album with the new coat of armour I have added to the original tracks. I think fans of the original album always appreciated what we did with the technology of the day. This latest version shows what is possible now."
Four brand new tracks will also be included, including the single Don't Hold Back, which manages to not only sound like a perfect bedfellow for the original thirteen tracks on New Forms but is also thoroughly contemporary. Not surprising perhaps, considering the timeless quality that Roni Size/Reprazent captured through the likes of Heroes, Share The Fall and the top 20 single Brown Paper Bag. New single, Don't Hold Back will be released on March 24th, two weeks before the reissue of New Forms2.

Once upon a time I went to see Paul Oakenfold and a drum n' bass buy opened up for him by the name of Rockraida or something. Guy kicked ass big time!
I only found one album of his. forgot the name of it, but it has a yello rollercoaster on the cover
