Flip-flops in clubs - a cautionary tale

For some reason I recalled this cautionary tale from last summer in ibiza and thought I'd share .

In ibiza (and I'm sure other worldwide beach-based clubbing resorts) it seems cool to be a beach bum, and drag your tanned hide into a club later ... just to show what a cool party animal you are and prove that you can cope with a 24-hour session. The integral beach bum fasion wear is board shorts, shades, v dirty t-shirt and the mandatory flip-flops.

Now we Brits have never been too big on flip-flops .. primarily because the weather's always crap, so you seldom get the opportunity to wear them in - plus they end up chaffing you and giving you blisters, so you end up hobbling around in pain !

So there I was in Space last summer, Digweed is on the Space Terrace for his 2nd set of the night, its 5.00 a.m. and I'm flagging a bit. So I pull up a stool at the bar, get in a jack'n'coke, taking in the sounds/vibe and chatting to the lovely senorita next to me.

Despite the glass collectors regular clearance of emptys and breakages there's a build up of glass on the floor. An unsuspecting flip-flop wearer walks past and then his face contorts in absolute pain - at first I though Diggers must have dropped a mis-labelled copy of Cowpander by mistake ... but no .. the flip-flop wearer looks down at his foot which is now gushing blood Tarantino-style from a wound with a v large piece of glass sticking out.

I signal the bar staff and tell them to get towels (and lots of them) pronto - they then send the poor clubber off to 1st aid and no doubt A & E (or ER as you say in the States).

I'm sure there is a key learning point for all of us in there ahead of the WMC and Ibiza later this summer. So what are your thoughts on flip-flops in clubs per se ... and have you got any similar cautionary tales ??

Re: Flip-flops in clubs - a cautionary tale

anyplace which is crowded, dark, and full of drunk people, with or without bottles is always a bad place for flip flops imo.

Re: Flip-flops in clubs - a cautionary tale

Depending on the location (outdoor being the only scenario for flip-flops), but isn't flip-flops frowned upon in most clubs' dress codes? WTF wears flip-flops on a night out unless you're a chick? And how the fuck do you dance in them anyway? :what

Re: Flip-flops in clubs - a cautionary tale

Flip flops off the beach are never a good look. You might as well be an Aussie and bore people stupid with tales of how you surfed the Thames whilst pouring pints of guiness.

People who wear flip flops in clubs ranks slightly above guidios imo.

The italians LOVE wearing speedos in Ibiza, you can spot them a mile away. It's classic. Back to the flip flops, I've seen the patio outside the terrace at Space @ 5:00AM and it is littered with broken glass at times. People just knock drinks over and sometimes the staff there can't clean them up quick enough. I wouldn't wear filp-flops to a club.

Re: Flip-flops in clubs - a cautionary tale

I always wear flipflops in clubs. If there's no snow on the ground, the flipflops get used.

Re: Flip-flops in clubs - a cautionary tale

i'd say if you wear flipflops in a club, you are basically asking to have your feet getting cut up.

Re: Flip-flops in clubs - a cautionary tale

The initial post reminds me of this girl last yr during WMC @ Niki Beach....we were in VIP dancing & having a good time. This group beside us is nice & hammered and the girls are dancing barefoot on the benches/couches...yes bafefoot!

Anyways, one girl drops her drink and it shatters...other girl doesn't notice and steps down to hug another friend...next thing we know there is blood gushing everywhere and she has this enormous piece of glass sticking out of the bottom of her foot. Looked like a slasher flick with the blood everywhere and the cushions being white didn't help.

Re: Flip-flops in clubs - a cautionary tale

Simple, keep glass out of the clubs or grow up. At least that's how we roll in Florida and I've never had any issues.

Ibiza was the shite too. I was there back in 97 but didn't roll in flip flops then. It just wasn't sexy.
