http://www.leechild.com/ Bit weird that he treats his hero almost like a real person , but the books are great. :D
Another one I like is Harlan Corbin. I love Carl Hiaasen, bit quirky, very environmentally friendly. Not everyone's taste.

His earlier stuff is superb.....Sick Puppy one of his best....one of his recent ones about his golfing exploits didn't quite hit the mark
Time for some Elmore Leonard, Up in Honey's Room
Re: What book are you reading now?
Loved Sick Puppy !! My first Carl Hiaasen !! Actually bought it in an op shop in England and bought it home to read!! Haven't read anything about golfing yet. As I find golf pretty boring unless you are playing , might just skip those! :)
I've probably read most of Elmore Leonard as well.
Funny, I would have expected Floridaorange to be here saying "single eh" by now
I must be in an English mood, started Elizabeth George "Careless In Red " Last night.

These are on my next up list:
New Neal Stephenson:

Almost 1000 pages long and it sounds awesome.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061977969

This is supposed to be pretty good too and packed with lots of 80s references.
Re: What book are you reading now?
I started on Ready Player One but it's on hold at the moment 'cos before that I just read Reynold's House of Suns which I thought was really good, couldn't follow up with Ready Player One.
Currently reading Reynold's Terminal World which unfortunately is not as good as House of Suns.
Reamde's premise sounds similar to Stross' Halting State, whose sequel Rule 34 I just read before House of Suns. But will probably give Reamde a shot, been years since I read Stephenson.
Re: What book are you reading now?
I have this waiting as well. Egan ... is not an easy read.

Yeah I was hooked into it for sure. The Tim Page one i started about a year ago but never really got into. After reading Dispatches though i kind of got into the Tim Page one more easily.
Re: What book are you reading now?
Recently read:
Little Hands Clapping by Dan Rhodes. ^^^Fantastic. Entertaining, a bit of a quick read, but the characters are wonderfully detailed. Lovely stories behind all faces.
Apathy and Other Small Victories by Paul Neilan ^^^Really good... Funny and realistic. The main character seems to be a basic sketch of a 21st century Holden Caulfield, but caring even less.
Currently reading:
The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery Not sure how I feel about this one. Only 60 pages in, and I've started reading instead...
The Years of Rice and Salt by Kim Stanley Robinson Too early to tell.
Future reading: Replay by Ken Grimwood ...based on a recommendation. Premise seems like it might be repetitive, but I'll give it a shot.
The Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey A whim, basically. I remember reading a couple of her books when I was a kid, so I thought perhaps I could start at the beginning and see if it's good enough to commit myself to reading the entire series.

Currently reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde. Sumptuous. Need to resume Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain, too.

I'm 70% into this. It's very slow and not too exciting. I remember Murakami being a bit more surreal, this is tedious. And the language is just so plain, not sure if it's due to translation. I might quit Murakami after this.

Re: What book are you reading now?
Started The Hobbit 2 days ago - it was on the bookshelf (my girlfriends side) and I was bored. Cant say I'm overly impressed so far, but it will be nice to say I've read it.

'One of the best last year' surprises me, got a link? Curious to see what else is on the list.
1Q84 is actually 3 novellas, book 1 progresses at a LANGUID pace and you have no idea what's going on. Book 2 you do get an inkling and towards the end, the plot moves faster and then slows down again. Book 3 is continuing the same slowed down pace.
I think Harry Potter The Deathly Hallows Pt 1 would be a good comparison: Scenes of the teens camping in the wild, completely vacuous.
I want to say 1Q84 suffers from over-writing but it's not, it's just the pace; I guess the plot can be more condensed. If you're a fan you'd probably still wanna check it out for yourself but yeah it's about a 1,000-page commitment—can't wait for this to finish and move on to another book.

Re: What book are you reading now?
Just had a look at 1Q84's reviews on Amazon, pretty polar :lol:
I've only read Bossypants on that list, I suppose it's entertaining and insightful enough to be on the 'best' list.
