You guys know about this? The samples on the website sound pretty cool.
Nine Inch Nails presents Ghosts I - IV, a brand new 36 track instrumental collection available right now. Almost two hours of new music composed and recorded over an intense ten week period last fall, Ghosts I - IV sprawls Nine Inch Nails across a variety of new terrain.

Trent Reznor explains, "I've been considering and wanting to make this kind of record for years, but by its very nature it wouldn't have made sense until this point. This collection of music is the result of working from a very visual perspective - dressing imagined locations and scenarios with sound and texture; a soundtrack for daydreams. I'm very pleased with the result and the ability to present it directly to you without interference. I hope you enjoy the first four volumes of Ghosts."

Re: NIN - Ghosts I-IV

I listened to the samples on the site and thought they were hit or miss. The first one, not my style, but the second was pretty sweet. Made me think of that Outkast line "like piano playing softly in the dark" It was good to hear some different sounds from them, but some of the tracks are still vintage NIN sounding despite being instrumental.

Re: NIN - Ghosts I-IV

I'm listening to Ghosts I right this very moment, just d/l'ed it last night. I've always been much more of a fan of the musical component of NIN than Reznor's vocals, so this is right up my alley. Not ideal for all circumstances, but for certain settings, it will be just what the doctor ordered.

I think it would be perfect for a late, dark flight home after a long week, sipping a glass of wine. I actually have such a situation coming up soon, very much looking forward to trying it out.

great price, too: $5 for direct download from the site, or it's being freely distributed on the torrent sites, with Reznor's blessing and encouragement.

Re: NIN - Ghosts I-IV

got the other 3 segments last night, listening right now. Gotta say, I'm a big fan the more I listen to it. I always thought Trent Reznor was an absolute genius from a musical standpoint. The only "problem" (and that's a really strong word in this context) I ever had with NIN was that the lyrics were filled with angst, both in their content and their delivery. To be totally honest, I've been very fortunate in my life, and I'm not really filled with anger, hopelessness, rage, sorrow, etc., so I just couldn't relate and as I got older, it became harder to overlook that component of it.

This is great, though -- still musically creative and brilliant, still edgy, still aggressive, still unquestionably NIN, minus the totally irrelevant lyrics.

It's not a masterpiece -- there's definitely some experimentation going on (sorta reminds me a bit of Richard James, where he'd do a stream of consciousness recording session and just release the whole thing), and not all of it works for me. Way more hits than misses, though...

ditto that.

i listened to about half of it yesterday night and i love every track on there...

the only gripe i have is that i wish some of the tracks went on for longer... too many small 2-3 minute tracks imo.

Playing Ghost I in the office right now. Wicked, hope the rest of it is equally textured and varied. Did you guys get the torrent with the wallpapers and sleeve notes in PDF? The PDF is beautiful. Each mp3 came with the track graphic encoded as well. AWESOME.

Re: NIN - Ghosts I-IV

Nope, that's not Ghosts, it's a whole new album. ;)

First three tracks were average NIN at best, the rest quite awesome.

great album, got the direct link from the nin site and also bought when it came out in the stores as well. very cool concept. It will be interesting to see how it will be performed live though.

my guess is that it will be like how TOOL performs.

they do real songs then in between them, they take like 3-5 minute breaks and play weird sounds.

or they can always incorporate this album into already made tracks.. would be cool to see that.
