Ever tried to break a CD in half?

Accidently burnt a file as data instead of mp3, rendering the CD as useless... so I thought I'd snap it in half.

Except I couldn't, so I stood on it... four times. At which point it didn't break in half but exploded into a zillion pieces which I had to sweep up. And now my eyes hurt. Although that may because I've not been in front a computer screen for two weeks. And I'm tired.

Just a little story.

No, it's best to wear safety goggles when doing that. Man did you retain nothing from shop class?

#273627Post 3 of 41

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

Shop class? Is that where you learn to shop? What's that got to do with CDs? Unless you're buying them...

Hmm...Maybe I should've called it Wood Shop. You know, where they teach you to put safety goggles on before you do anything constructive or destructive. "Learn to shop"...man you cra-zy.

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

hey, you coulda just used the data cd for storage of .mp3's ! Useless?! I think not there, chief.

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

It's cool. You have to do it the right way though. If you bend it in one direction then it just breaks. If you bend it the other way all of the thin filmy material that holds the data disintegrates and flys everywhere. You're right though - Don't do it near anyones eyes.

Ahh, but I chose to write the whole disc so I couldn't use it for anything else...

There's a lesson here for all of us, you'll thank me one day

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

when I was a kid my dad broke countless cds that I had borrowed from some friends that had some vulgar words and such..... even on some psy goa cds that had titles like " orgasmic trance " or what not.

He'd break the cds to my face and amazingly enough I never got hurt

agree

#273701Post 11 of 41

yeh, I've done it both ways... had it explode into confetti, and other times had them not even break, just would bend into a taco. And yeah, I always close my eyes if I ever even attempt to break one after the explosion 6+ years ago.

With technology such that files on your hard drive are not considered unrecoverable even after 5 low level formats, breaking a CD is a refreshingly thorough way to distroy unwanted data.

#273939Post 15 of 41

^ ...except that those files that you want "permanently" destroyed have/had to reside on a computer somewhere for burning, even if it did go through 5 low-level formats, they're not permanently destroyed

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

I hear putting it in a microwave is pretty sweet. Probably not good for the microwave though.

Here's some other CD fun you can have: http://apache.airnet.com.au/~fastinfo/microwave/cd/

Well, yes but if you save mp3s as data you can store 800MB on a CD as opposed to 80 minutes (around 80MB) as an mp3 (which will play on a CD player)...

Anyway, my eyes feel much better today thanks, so you needn't worry any more. :D

A female friend of mine sat on one that was on a car seat and broke it with ease. Fucks sake, I have to check out what her arse is made out of.

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

MMM yeah, once I had a demo cd that a friend gave me at a rave in my pocket, fucker broke in half sometime during the night.

The next time I burned a cd from one of the kiss shows so I could play it in my car. It didn't work and I got pissed and broke it into about a thousand pieces. Damn, I was more pissed that I had to clean up all those tiny pieces.

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

#274681Post 34 of 41

i think my story is the most sad and stupid of all (or at least i am the most stupid of all).the first (and only cd) that i broke was ''chris fortier-bedrock cd2''.i got it by mail and i was so anxious to listen it (i always listen the 2nd cd first)but somehow i couldn't get it off the case.after 2 minutes i managed to break it in half....the good thing is that i am more patient since then..

#274743Post 35 of 41

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

a cd can shatter if you burn it a 52x for 4 minutes.... (which is about the 700mb size of the cd).... combination of the heat and spinning will break it and your burner..

saw this at local puter show where i go.....

crazy fuckers.....

and of course the microwave works ....all to well....

An advice from a friend... CHANGE YOUR DAD!!!

And back to the topic... I just tried to break a CD and it's not even that hard. And there were only about 10-20 pieces flying around.

...although they do look quite sharp and a bit dangerous... :)

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

Try frying a CD in the microwave, it's kinda cool, don't know how this came about but a co-worker showed me a couple of weeks ago in the company microwave, he put it in for about 15 secs. It's kinda cool, doesn't hurt the microwave but does some cool shit to the cd

Re: Ever tried to break a CD in half?

You should toss those cd into the air and shoot them with a rifle like that that skeet shooting competition in the olympics!

I've thrown scratched beyond repair cd's in a parking lot until they shatter, when it does shatter it's a cool spectacle.
