Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

I wonder if Hernan could give it to us uninterpreted for the MS birthday this year. Probably couldn't, but what a present that would be. :D

Btw is anyone else yelling at Pete Tong ?? "It's Catt aan e o" [You know what I mean!!]

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

Used to think Hernan played the most boring music on earth but this is pretty fucking good.

Converted.

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

Really a slow start but picks up nicely. Decent but not extraordinary a very solid listen.

I did delete this after one listen.

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

If you are all loving this mix, then I suggest you start downloading his Metrodance shows - 16/2 is a belter, and most of his shows are really good, better than this EM i would say, which I think is average at best.

#976732Post 49 of 78

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

^ agreed. The EM was really enjoyable. However, overall, I think some of his recent sequential stuff has been better.

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

you know, hernan had an absolutely corker of an e-mix a few years back at some festival, with other live sets being oakenfold and underworld.

I remember the first time i heard sugarhigh was on that set. does anyone recall which e-mix that one was? i'd love to hear that one again....

werd, 7/10 for me

but, would love to hear that on a massive system in a club type atmosphere down in SA

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

I like the metrodance from 16/2. 5/1 was pretty amazing and there were some equally amazing last year. But for me this essential mix is just superb. !! I'm very surprised that anyone who knows Hernan's work would delete after one listen. His stuff is too complex to pick up all the nuances in one listen. I did love it first play, but my preferences have changed enormously since my first listen. :D And play it loud!

He always gets better with every listen. A definite grower  And turn it up loud to get everything.

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

i didnt like the first 30mins when i first heard the mix but after listening to it for so many times since then made it grew like fine wine. it probably didnt help when it was played off the crappy speakers on my ibook ...

i'd agree that he plays the sickest stuff on his metrodance shows but the reason why this EM is better imo is that its a 2hr uninterrupted mix rather than 4 30mins mix ...

#976916Post 54 of 78

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

Yeah the mix is definately a grower..by the 1st listening I did not like the 2nd half as much as the 1st one but listening again to it one time over my normal speakers and especially listening to it via Headphones made me change my mind..the mix is just superb from the beginning to the end and this includes the track choice, mixing between tracks and the set building. I am also sure that a lot more work wento into this EM than in his weekly Metrodance show and if he would have released this mix as Sequential Vol. 3 commercially I would have raved about it the same way because the mix has a very clubby feeling and picks up the pace rather early already.

#976923Post 55 of 78

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

IMO, it's first and foremost a mix made for a big club system, and I'd love to hear it in that context. I've been looking for an alternative to the chin-stroking minimal bs that everyone yanks off to for a while and this is that alternative.

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

This mix is great! I have to admit I was a bit iffy at first when Hernan changed his style from the tribal stuff he used to play but lately hes been amazing. I love how he is able to create such a distinctive style no matter what type of music hes playing:D

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

This mix sucks!!!! WTF are you guys on???

NOT!!! This mix rules. :) That Ralph Falcon track was beautifully done by Radio Slave...Def not the typical Ralph Faclon Miami (Space) house sound on this one...Very moody and groovy.

while those are terrific mixes, i have to disagree with you that hernans mix isn't up to par. he brings back a sound that has long since disappeared and does it with such grace that it demands attention and respect. with all the millions of tech and mnml mixes that are flooding our ear canals today, it is certainly refreshing to hear a mix that contains the best in progressive house (many of the people roots here at mercuryserver) and done so with pure class. this mix kicked my ass in the first hour and kinda lost me in the second hour, but after three listens i have grown to love this set and the complete atmosphere hernan creates within it. this is such a nice change up from the normal click-clap-slap stuff that i [also] love, but you can only hear so many slap-tap-flap's before you need a different - 'musical' if you will - sound. that being said, i urge you to light a spliff and give hernan one more listen.

Sorry for the late reply, I was really sick for the past couple of days. I got mine from Beatport.

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

The metro mixes aren't anything like a Hernan club set - this mix reminds me more of when I saw Hernan play a house set Def Mix @ Pacha in 2005. i.e. beautiful house, but with no exhibitionism or showing off, no dropping obvious peak-time tracks, just setting a vibe (dark in places) and keeping things going.

Just like Sander's EM's (and Sasha's Maida Vale) this will stand up to the test of time, rather than being dated/restricted to a particular point in time.

Moshic's mix owns this one. not even close. not even in the same ballpark.

i'm listening to it again right now. second listen through. i'll post some of my second thoughts.

#977497Post 69 of 78

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

You can't compare these two mixes anyway..Moshic is Moshic and Hernan is Hernan..they play completely different tracks. Moshic's mix was a studio midtempo mix (one of my all time EM favs too btw) and Hernan's mix has a very clubby and "live" feeling plastered on the whole mix.

#977519Post 70 of 78

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

Well said TomTom ... at least the comments made me dust of Moshic's EM (plus many other sets available c/o west ocean events).

Haven't heard the Moshic EM but his anniversary mix has been in my ipod ever since I got it. Downloading now!!

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

moshics e-mix is gravy pudding pie for the ears. i listened to it so many times when it came out. seems like a good time to pull it out of the archive for another gander.

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

This set melts together pretty well enough for multipule listens really moody and driving enough but not so much to jolt the listener. It is nice to hear a set like this in an era of tech heaven, hopefully new sounds on the horizon. Pretty much been impressed with all the new prog style mixes in the promos section lately, almost forgot how nice it use to be to hear melodies and great synth pads.

#980049Post 74 of 78

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

um......i've changed my mind....this set is real good. I"m not going to saw outright awesome, but i just listened to it again, and think it's better on the 3rd or 4th try around. It helps to listen to this when the sun is out too. :)

I wouldn't compare them though. The Moshic is much more in your face! I actually think if Hernan had done his EM around the same time , it would have sounded similar! I think they have both moved on since then

I think thats an excellent observation...I love how the "Oh fuck" factor creeps up on you out of no where, gradually, rather than being told its that time by the increasingly rapid snare drum.

I think Tong gets it right this time by describing the mix as "lush". Can't think of a better adjective.

Re: Hernan Essesntial Mix????

I love how people describe their feelings on a mix, because it really sets a tone in your head.. then I start to change the way I hear and process mixes..

for instance, knowing what works at what time.

Thanks for the kind comments threehills.

BTW I've just been playing Hernan's 2002 EM from Creamfields, that still sounds pretty fresh.
