Had a discussion with a friend who uses cdj''s and ableton,,, no vinyl( good producer btw imo gettin there) and he told me that i should "throw" my decks cos they are useless (Technics) So i wantd to see how many of you guys still use the wheels of steel!!!!!! And see if it's worth throwing this legendary deck in the trash

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

just get serato and play off your decks. then you can play digital and vinyl on the same equipment, and have the advantage of being able to buy vinyl-only releases (though they are becoming less and less common).

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

I got me a pair of cdj's, but I did not throw out my wheels of steel! fuck no!. Keep them and upgrade to digital.

I still love vinyl and I collect those rarities.

I invested too much in vinyl, that I wont sell my decks or my collection. They mean too much for me to replace them with money... but a whore?.. hmmmmmm

That's wat i said fuck no!!!! Those babies are brand new!!!!! so i might as try and use the serato but how's the sound off serato ? recently saw Moshic using it (not sure if it was final scratch) .....Cdj maybe is the best upgrade ? but much more expensive though..

#970888Post 5 of 46

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

sound on serato is indistinguishable from cdjs. there is no difference.

Agreed. Thats what I did. :)

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

fuck no, don't get rid of your decks, you'll always wanna spin on them. They are just so nice and really do keep your mixing chops up, as it is harder to mix vinyl than cd's.

#970932Post 8 of 46

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

I don't get the opportunity to play that often anymore, but I still keep the decks in my closet. Just in case I get the urge to spin some of my classics. So my answer is no don't get rid of them!

#971009Post 9 of 46

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

same here. I still do all my mixes on vinyl, and even when I move on to other equipment in the future I will never just pitch my turntables.

i respectfully disagree with this.. for me after playing cd's i found it easier to play vinyl.

but as others have said.. do not toss them, whoever said they are useless is very wrong. there is A LOT of great music that still does and always will come out on vinyl.

question.. did this person ever play vinyl or has he always played digital format in some way shape or form?

Always been digital , no interest in vinyl at all..... I think mixing vinyl is harder but then everyone has a different opinion.... i used cdj's for 1hr and i was feeling very confortable with mixing....and tracks that weren't mine. Serato is on the way woooriiii!!! :p

Computers are ok, but I dont know if i will use these. I dont like that Sasha uses them even though he really doesnt need to prove that he can mix...

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

there are some vinyl only djs around here and my music selection kicks their ass. unless you are living in berlin and getting music sent to you by the best producers in the world, your music will lag behind imo

but certainly do not ditch them, serato seems to be your best bet

and i do agree w/ jeff, i find cdjs easier than vinyl, but i have heard others say vinyl is easier as well... all preference imo.

#971994Post 18 of 46

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

i don't know if just playing vinyl here means you are behind, BUT most of the new stuff today is for the most part coming out only on vinyl. But it's kinda funny, with the new ways people are recording their tracks these days...90% of all that new stuff would not work on vinyl. Guys using stereo bass with chorus on it and all kinds of phasing.

yeah for me too, as for toss them NO WAY....i was owner of a technics 1200 blacks in 2000, and i went to the beach with some friends and when i came back home, my bro sell them without my permission i so fucking hate him rite now, but i kept my vinyls safe btw...some of my friends wants some of them but fuck NO!...those are mines...

also find harder spining vinyl after playing cds...but i like it more spining with vinyls to be honest!...

:x fucking brooo

a free pass?

sasha doesnt just take one digital track on ableton and mix it into another like some lap top dj's.. he is actually pretty much re-editing/looping etc... on the fly there is a difference

#976172Post 21 of 46

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

^^^^yeah, realize that, but imo its somewhat overated....he still djing with a cpu.

#976202Post 22 of 46

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

its more of a performance IMO than dj-ing

and as far as when you use vinyl your music lags behind.. lags behind what? some of the top dj's in the world.. luke fair, desyn masiello, danny howells etc.. play shit that came out a while ago that just got buried in the masses of music that continually gets put out by beatport or any other digital outlet trying to make money.. throw as much as possible out and see what sticks, there has seriously been a lack of integrity since the arrival of the mp3J.. of course they get unreleased stuff too and stuff that wont be out for ages. but i saw an interview with luke fair where he said he digs and digs for most of what he plays and rarely if ever plays stuff thats been given to him.

I think part of the problem with this digital era, besides anyone can be a "dj" if they have mixmeister software and a laptop, is the fact there is SO much music coming out and 75% of it is crap Or it comes out and gets played by EVERYONE.

stop worrying about having the newest hottest track and play music that you love no matter how old/new it is, if it is a good track its a good track whether it is a day a month a year or 10 years old.

i just watched those "history of house" videos on youtube and found some tracks off of there that came out almost 25 years ago that would to this day blow up a club

I'm not being and arse when i ask this, but i am not understanding whats difficult about spinning vinyl? beat matching? programming?

I get that going from vinyl to cd is not always good and the sound quality is completely different.. but what else?

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

I sold my other deck a little over a year ago but would never sell the other. Recently did a little spring cleaning in my record collection and ended up getting rid of / selling about 200 records I've listened to once and then forgetting. Those fuckers take up a lot of unnecessary space.

^^^your so right. its totally saturated. I like djs who just play quality music new or old. it seems like so many people obsessed with just playing new relases.

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

keep the 12's. you could go through a divorce, bankruptcy, whatever...and you'll always have your Technics. Something about being with vinyl that is more real than 'mxing' on a computer.

It's the difference between fvcking a hot blonde babe, and a robot with a blonde wig.

That's so true....most of the dj's who started a couple of years ago that i know get very anal about new and "unreleased" tracks that sometimes those unreleased are already released on vinyl....it happened to me that a friend traded an "unreleased" track thru soulseek which was released on vinyl long before...... :p

#977550Post 32 of 46

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

hahaha, just because it is "unreleased" doesnt make it good.. EVERYHING was unreleased at one point ;)

#977882Post 33 of 46

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

It is always great to see Howells bust out some records in his sets. There are just so many tracks available in comparison to even five years back which may cause a lot of imitation production wise but also offer an opportunity with some time and effort in finding those hidden gems, the others missed or those up and coming artists who blow up a year later.

Re: Vinyl only Dj's

Serato is the way to go imo.....

You can use control vinyl or CD's to play all your digital tunes making you a more versatile DJ. I have around 700 vinyls and got Serato for Christmas this past year and have been ripping vinyls and downloading tracks like mad.

Plus Serato's functionality is great. Looping, cue points, track overviews and syncing w/ iTunes using your smart play lists make organizing your music way easy : )

Look at it like this. 2 CDJ 1000's $2k or so or 1 laptop capable of running Serato 6 or 7 hundred Serato $550

Thats 7 or 8 hundred less than CDJ's you could spend on music ; )

Def dont get rid of the Tech's. You'll regret it one day.
