Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Managed to rip a few ligaments a few days ago playing basketball. The swelling is getting worse everyday. I'm hoping to wake up in the morning and have it looking normal. The photo doesn't do it much justice but next to the other foot i look like i have elephantitis.

Nice eh?

So, cos my doctor is a clueless fuck and all my friends have different opinions, I'd like to get an idea of how long it took you to get back to normality, maybe not sports but being able to leave the house without using retard sticks {crutches}. There's only so much tv and computer i can take, I'm literally about to lose it. I almost miss work...and that in itself is fucking wrong.

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Missing work! F*&k that! Have you tried hot and cold compresses on it to get swelling down? Voltaren injection? Lots of rest going to be order of the day regardless!
Missing work! F*&k that! Have you tried hot and cold compresses on it to get swelling down? Voltaren injection? Lots of rest going to be order of the day regardless!
I've been on it with the hot and cold compresses since it happened. I have it elevated 90% of the time...like right now, can you imagine a 6"5' bloke with his leg up over a computer desk with a keyboard on his lap and a little side table for the mouse! haha I've even knocked my monitor resolution down so i can read {my eyes are cactus}.

Voltaren injection? Is that a pain killer? I don't think that's so readily available here in aus...not legally i think. My doctor has prescribed me some anti inflammatory's / pain killers which seem to be doing the trick, when i'm not moving :(

I don't know how people could be hermits. I've been at home 3 days straight and as i said, it's mentally painful. The only thing that's keeping me going is having my wife doing EVERYTHING for me

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Voltaren might relieve some pain but it's mainly anti-inflamatory. It won't do the complete trick. Go see the doc dude

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

i did my ligaments in years ago.

its a slow recovery and u will need to exercise your ankles.

first thing u need to do is go to the doctor.

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

i was born with a calcium deposit on my right ankle. it caused pain all throughout highschool and finally when i was 20/21 it was unreal pain. i managed to get a free surgery through something called Vocational Rehabilitation and they sawed off the excess bone. couldn't walk on it for a month. the pain is nonexistent now, but it sure hurt like a bitch before that surgery. imo, take the advice the others have offered and get in to a doctor. as i tell my friends who are in the military overseas - protect your feet and your balls - because you will need them for the rest of your life.

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Rolled my ankle in the same fashion two summers ago jumping outta the back of a cube van, rolling it on the side of a dried out rut. The night of, i dragged it around to a few bars, bad call. Took about a week and a half to actually be able to walk on it without some assistance. Turned from the ugly black/blue color, to an even uglier yellow nearer the end. They always say it's better to break, than sprain. Either way, your looking at a long recovery. Still fails on me from time to time when you put it in an awkward position. Makes you realize what you take for granted. Take it easy eh.

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Tore three of four ligaments in my right ankle playing baseball a few years ago. I heard them snap. Thought i broke my ankle, but nope, just tore the ligs. Doc said it probably would have been better if i would have just broken the thing, because ligament damage is something they really can't do a lot for. Wrapped it up, stay off it, take some meds, that's it. The key to recovery is- when you are able to walk on it, physical therapy is a must. If not professionally, then at least get some ankle workouts from someone and do them regularly to build strength back up in your ankle. Really a fucking pain in the ass injury man. And to this day, my ankle isn't the same, never will be. I still favor it playing sports, and i feel like it has a higher tendency to roll now. I wrap my ankle if going wake boarding, or doing any high pressure ankle sporting stuff. Guess that's why i'm so into fishing now. lol.

Best of luck, ligament damage = ball suckage.

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

I sprained my thumb about 3 weeks ago and it still not right. I can't open a fresh jar and many other things. It's going to take some time to heal, but get yourself to the doctor. It looks bad!

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Have had the misfortune of doing it a few years ago, and like everyone else on here, it's never been the same since and never will be.

Got a bad tackle playing football (soccer) and ever since then I've never been as strong as I once was.

Bitch of an injury really, good luck with your rehab!

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Sheesh, I guess we've all done in our ankles. I did mine about 14 years ago, skating.

Consider yourself lucky you tore the outer ones (there are two), because they will heal. The inner one almost never heals correctly.

I didn't have crutches, but I probably should have. I can't remember how long I limped around.

It was about nine months before my ankle felt "normal", and maybe close to two years before all the twinges were gone.

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

A doctor told you you ripped ligaments or you are assuming?

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

years ago i hurt mine. went to the doctor and got an x-ray. he said it was just a severe sprain. after about 8wks of it looking alot like yours i went to a bone doctor. before he even had the x-ray completely out of the envelope he said it was broken deep in my ankle and the only way to fix it would be to rebrake it, but b/c of the location it would be almost impossible to brake it in the same spot. to this day, it bothers me in bad weather and the knuckle is bigger than the other.

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?
A doctor told you you ripped ligaments or you are assuming?
No I've been to the doctor, he then referred me to a radiologist to have it x-rayed for any breaks, after that i went for an ultrasound, this is where they found damage to the ligaments.

As i said in my first post, i don't trust this doc, he's not my regular one, he answered all of my questions with such vagueness i limped out of there not really knowing that much at all about what I'd done to my foot. He stressed that i rest up and keep it elevated, that's all that could be done. And by the sounds of it, there really isn't much else i can do.

Since the photo above my entire foot has turned black, fucken nasty looking but the pain is getting bearable.

Cheers for the feedback guys, i was looking for some reassurance and i got it. Back to work on Monday for light duties ie. sitting on my ass all day doing paperwork instead of being out on construction sites. YAY! :|

Bender - that's the shit I'm worried about! I need my ankles for bball :(

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Try icing continously for three days to get rid of all the swelling and get the DVD's out and just prop that ankle up even while you sleep with a bunch of pillow, might be uncomfortable as hell, should make it somewhat usable, can't say it will work for you but I've to do it before from lack of money to see a doctor, good luck

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Pisana, listen to me I've made my living as a physio for the last 10 years treating at leat 3 sprained ankles a week, so I've seen and treated hundreds of these.

The advice I'm giving assumes that you have no fracture at all.

 1. Do NOT ice it any more. It is of no use any more and will hinder further healing. The acute stages of this injury have passed and further application of ice will be detrimental as it decreases circulation.

 2. At this stage do not put any heat on it either. Heat will be of assistance in about 7-10 days time.

 3. You must start to weight-bear on it as soon as possible, pain or no pain and throw away any walking aid (crutches, walking stick) that you may have. If you want, take some Voltaren or other non-steroidal to take the edge off. Plenty of studies of these injuries have shown that early weight-bearing is the most important contributor to speed of recovery. The weight-bearing stimulus actually encourages early collagen re-synthesis and collagen is the basic building block of ligaments.

 4. When off your feet elevate it and do intrinsic foot exercises i.e. basically just curl your toes again and again tensing all the muscles in the sole of the foot.

 5. Start to do calve raises. Half the reason you have so much swelling is that your venous return is so poor because you are not utilising the calve muscles which act as a pump to draw away fluid from the feet. Support your body weight in standing by leaning on a wall with both arms and raise your heels off the ground. Keep yout hips and back straight. Don't count but do as many as you can till you fatigue or injury pain gets worse.

 6. If you have access to a mini-trampoline use it. Don't jump on it just bounce transferring weight from one foot to the other.

 7. Also use a wobble board to start to regain the proprioceptive function i.e. the balance function of you ankle ligaments. The quicker you work on this the quicker your recovery.

 8. Assuming you have not completely ruptured the ATFL (anterior talo-fibular ligament) what we're looking at here is a high-grade 1 / low grade 2 inversion sprain. Expect a full healing time of 5-6 weeks from the date of injury, i.e. a return to high impact/intensity sport. You will not reach this unless you exercise and stretch your calve muscle. If you have completely ruptured the ATFL recovery will be longer. See an experienced sports physical therapist who can make the distinction for you. However most ankle injuries by far are grade 1 inversion sprains.

Let me know how you go

Let me know how you go
you sir are a god! I fucked the crutches off as of yesterday and have been putting weight back on it, not all but some weight. The pain is minimal now, so much that i don't need any pain killers.

I've taken all that you've said on board, thanks again!

Phil

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

Did mine while playing a game of cricket in 1993. I was a young kid then and a tear away fast bowler. We made a few runs that game of which i made 60 odd. It was bout 40 degrees and after we batted i needed to take some rest cause i was suffering from heat exhaustion. Anyway when i came on the team was in trouble and i could not bowl for like 8-12 overs cause i was off the ground for that time. Anyway when i did get a chance to bowl my captain said bowl as quick as u can cause we need wickets.. i think it was my 3rd or 4th ball in and i rolled my left ankle inward.. i fell down like a pack of shit and the pain was the worst thing i have ever felt prob to this day. i went to the doctors after the game and he said i tore the ligaments. i was on crutches for bout a month. Can't remember if we won the game but i made the school boy's team for Victoria and did not get to play because of it.. i was really upset and my cricket ability has gone down hill since then hahaha.. i still play though. don't think i will stop till i am bout 70 or 80 LOL

Re: Ankle injuries..who's had them?

damn, sorry to hear pisana. i've been there. i've sprained and torn ligaments in my right ankle twice or three times when i was younger, from skateboarding. It really makes you appreciate being able to walk normally.

there's some good advice in this thread alredy. Hope you recover quickly!
