I'm not to big opn the French wines. Haven;t found one that I liked yet. As for the Argentinian Malbecs, I always need my weekly dose. Try the Mark West Pinot if you get the chance.

Re: Wine
Where's the love for the big Italian wines?! I love my wines, but have never been a huge fan of the French ones (aside from the Pinot Noir and others as they combine with food well). Huge fan of the barolo, brunello and so many of the tuscan wines. I just like a bigger punch in my wine, not soft and oakey (yes I'm over-generalizing here).
Re: Wine
While I was in France over the summer I learned that American wineries attempt to replicate the French taste by putting their wine into oak barrels imported from France. But the French don't use their own oak because it's too strong and pungent. They typically use oak from the US! At least that's what one winemaker told us.
And as for Italian wines. I've tasted a few good Tuscans and actually my favorite white, other than a white burgundy, is a Pinot Grigio from Friuli.
Re: Wine
I am headed to Italy this year and will try to make it to at least one Vineyard.

Back in the 1860s, a plague of insects detroyed the French vineyards and they brought in the California wine seeds (which were more resistant to the insects) to replenish their crops. If it weren't for the better weather conditions in France, there wouldn't be much difference between the California and French wines...interesting.
Re: Wine
My wife and I are heading to CA for a wedding this summer and are planning on making a week of it in Napa/Sonoma wine country up there. Anyone got any tips?
We're planning on hitting some of the more well-known places -- Opus One, Silver Oak -- but would love some input on some places I might not think to go.
My favorite day-to-day wine right now is the Coppola 2002 Diamond Claret. It's getting harder to find the 2002, though -- more sellers just have the '03, which is good but not as good.
I'm not a white wine guy, but the 2004 Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc is also quite good. Light and crisp, and great for summer coming up when red wine can be a bit much at times, esp. when you're outdoors.
Re: Wine
almost forgot -- Spanish wines are big on my list right now as well, esp. from Priorat...
Re: Wine
Not a huge wine drinker but love a glass of red zin here and there.... all time favorite is Cosentino Zinfandel"cigar zin".... good stuff.

best tip is not to drive. A lot of people will rent a limo and hit all of the vineyards in style. also, if you are going to be tasting a lot of wine, you will get buzzed and its better to let someone else drive.
In all honesty, you write a report when you get back to give us some tips. I haven't had the chance to make it there yet. ;)
Re: Wine
Ive tried a fair amount of wines, I like Pepperwood Grove for under $10 it's the best imo. Give the merlot a try or chard. with dinner sometime ;)

Re: Wine
Wow, what an eye opener!
A 4 page thread about wine and not one mention of any Portuguese wines  That just shows how well we promote our own best products...:what Anyone ever heard about Port? Not that I like it much, but I thought everyone knew that one.
1st of all, there?s only one kind of wine imo...red wine. White wine is a refreshment.
2nd of all, I?m drinking a nice bottle of red wine right now, Loios from Alentejo, my favourite region.
But most stuff from the Douro and Dao regions is always pretty good
But I agree, no one beats the French at this. I especially enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon and derivates. We have the Cabernet chaste of grapes around here too, but it?s not as good, it?s probably down to the fact that it?s not the perfect combination of grape, climate and soil that?s achieved in France.

Re: Wine
Chilean wines are for me the best, Concha y Toro make some incredible CabSav and some impressive Chardonnay, i like their Casillero del Diablo branch out of their Main vineyards.Theres another one thats pretty cheap and tasty, called Santa Carolina wich comes from the central valleys, its a nice blend of CabSav and Merlot. Also theres some really good mexican chardonnays, most of them comming out of the Domeq house. I also like some of the italian red wines, stuff like Chianti, comming out of the Terre regions.
i recently became a wine fan, but i must admit im only buying latin america and some european bottles at the moment, you can get some insanely good Chilean wine bottles for something like 3 to 12 dlls here in Mexico.
Re: Wine

who says room temp? Some where I read that it is kept cooler than room temp, like 50 F or so, but I am too lazy to search on google atm so it will remain an unknown.

wow, the temp for red wine should be similar to cellar temp which is around 63 to 68 degress. I guess you been drinking it the right way.

That depends on the place where you are, doesn?t it? ...doesn?t say chilled there. If he means "chilled" as in "put it in the refrigerator for a while", well...I personally hate it that way.
Maybe we?re lucky because our average temperatures are similar to those in the chart :D

my bad on the wording of chilled. I hate chilled wine too. Here room temp is around 72 - 80F so that is what I am use to in drinking wine, but I might get a good chiller to bring it down to the right temp. ;)
Re: Wine
I love wine. and it loves me. My panties always come off and very easily. I do not drink this Jesus Blood in public.
Re: Wine
I'd like to throw a few new varieties into the mix, the Australian shiraz (my everyday one is the rosemount), a good spanish rioja (great for sangria) and from the white ones a german gurweitzminier (have no idea on the spelling).
 toasty, a few vineyards I'd recommend in Napa are:
Stag's Leap - this was the first american wine to take first prize in a tasting vs. the french, the cabernet (especially the SLV) and chardonnay are both excellent and I usually hate chardonnays. Also, it's not a cheap wine, but their prices are so much better at the winery than in stores.
Sterling Vineyards - just for the tram ride alone
Re: Wine

I agree...I drank buckets of this stuff while I lived in Spain.

The Rosemount Shiraz is what hooked me into wine. Its a great wine IMO
Re: Wine
normally i'm anti-resurecting old threads, but a thread on the politics forum was talking about wines, and i just want to say, two-buck-chuck is as good as silver to me. my tastes may not be refined, but the cost can't be beat.
other than that, i stick to Port; love six grapes and aged fladgate.
(if anyone knows a good pinot noir, i'd love to check that out too, have had good experiences with it ;) )
Re: Wine
u can tell the difference between a cheap wine and a decent wine.
for example i went through every wine on the wine list in a bar in England. they all tasted awful and cost a fortune. we just dont have the culture. yet in italy its very difficult to find a bad wine, and even then you are paying so little u dont mind that its not the best.
Re: Wine
because it depends on where the bottle is sold, not packaged??
Re: Wine
Wow. I did not know about this thread. And I was just at a local Wine and Alcohol shop in downtown and was asking the gentleman in there about Sherry. Does anyone on here drink any Sherry...and I do mean the drink.
I've been interested in the drink for a while but haven't found any sherry tastings in this town, so I went to this dealer and he told me to go to a few upper end wine diners and buy a couple glasses of various sherry. I'm a gonna have my own Sherry tasting...and no not the girl.
Re: Wine
the best thing about bordeaux is that even the 3 euro bottles in the supermarket are decent enough to have with dinner. and don't get me started on saint emillion mmmmmmmmm
Re: Wine
Marques De Caserras Rioja is nice.

Cool. Sherry is a nice drink. Particularly as either and pre or post dinner. For me personally, dry sherry is the best for drinking. The sweet stuff is almost like sugar.
Experiment. I'm sure you will find what you like.
