Re: whos into scotch >?

I tried my first scotch on Thursday. I learned that you cannot drink scotch like other liquor. I had to sip it and really enjoy it. Was quite fun though. I will try and get the name of it from my friend who turned me onto it.

I don't know much about it, but its my favorite drink by far. Glen Fiddich on the rocks, tinyest splash of water is the way I like it. Some people drink it at room temp without ice, whats that called? Up? Neat? (can you tell I don't get out much?)

BTW, The new Johnny Walk black commerical is pretty sweet.

Re: whos into scotch >?

I used to hate Scotch but that changed with Balvenie 15-year old single barrel - smoother than a seamless Garcia mix !

Re: whos into scotch >?

drinking scotch (or any hard alcohol) straight is called "neat".

I personally love single malt, though a good 18 year old chivas or johnny walker blue label will definitely be welcomed any day.

for single malts, in order of preference, i like:

Lagavulin - very peaty (smokey) flavor, 16 year old Islay malt, and once you acquire a taste for it, you won't want anything else Oban - a sweeter, more medium bodied scotch. extremely smooth. If you don't like a peat-flavored scotch, this will surely be a winner. Bowmore - they produce several good varieties of scotch, with Bowmore Darkest (15 year old) and Bowmore 17 year old being two of my faves. I would recommend getting anything older than 12 years from bowmore, as their younger scotches are not as good as stuff that has been aged a bit longer. I tried a 25 year old bowmore recently that was to-die-for.

If you are going to drink stuff like Glenlivet or Glenfiddich, don't buy the 12 year stuff...its not worth it. Spend a bit extra and get yourself at least an 18 year old (21 or 25 is incredible). You need to look for deals though...find places that buy the stuff bulk and offer reasonable prices.

As far as how to drink it, i tend to go against the traditional way of only drinking good scotch neat. I add two or 3 large ice cubes (don't chip them, or they melt too quickly) to a tumbler style glass with about 2.5 - 3 ounces of scotch. to me, thats the ideal way to drink the stuff, but find what works best for you.

Re: whos into scotch >?

scotch!!!?????

oh........ u mean whiskey!! they dont make it only in scotland.

i like the odd tipple but not an avid fan.

i prefer mine smokey so i go with a Laphroig or Talisker. Best sipped straight. a good whiskey doesnt need polluting with ice or water.

as for the dicussion between blended or single. u should be shot at dawn for not knowing the very important difference!!!!

Re: whos into scotch >?

Macallan or Glenlivit for me. More Macallan though, always have a bottle at hand. I miss sipping on it while standing out on the balcony in winter.

[Edit: And having a cig ... anyone noticed rollies go really well with scotch?]

i like glenlivit, most scotch is way too bitter for me

I finished a few days ago a bottle of Bowmore Legend. One of the best I drank so far. But I also loved the Ardbeg and always enjoy some Talisker.

Re: whos into scotch >?

Single Malt, always, and I always drink it neat. Even have the Glencairn glasses, made to drink whisky :D.

My fave's:

Talisker 10yr and Higland Park 12/18 yr (smokey, Speyside whiskys)

Good stuff I've tried so far

Balvenie Doublewood 12 yr Macallan 12 yr Dalmore 12 yr (first sip always tastes like honey) Lagavulin 16 yr Clynelish Oban

I really want to get a good Bowmore to try, I've been recommended that one by the guy at my liquor store (he's a whisky fanatic, always lots of good stuff).

Last time I went out I went on the cheap with W and got a few Famous Grouse...after the second one I wanted to puke since it tasted horrible. I loathe blends, the only one that is acceptable is JW in some cases, but the taste is nothing like a Single Malt.

#953770Post 26 of 46

Re: whos into scotch >?

try the bowemore darkest or the bowemore 17yr...both really nice.

ohh, and don´t lump all blends together...johnny walker blue label is some great stuff (granted it ain´t cheap).

#953800Post 27 of 46

Re: whos into scotch >?

I'd like to give Blue or Gold label a try some day, I can't imagine that they're bad at all, but regular blends really just don't cut it for me, as do lower range whiskys :D

I'll see if I can find one of those recommended Bowmores...shoud be good ;)

Dalmore 12 yr (first sip always tastes like honey)
drank a flask of that at my last gig. very smooth. dalmore is an awesome value.

Re: whos into scotch >?

im a scotch guy (unless it's after a meal then I go for cognac or if i want desert a nice port or sherry will do). imo the best are lagavulin, oban, glenmorangie (the 18 is fantastic). for christmas my father in law got me a bottle of cragganmore 29 which is fantastic. my going out drink is the classic mac 12. i usually drink my scotch neat, but at times i add a splash of water for taste discernment. too much water (or ice) ruins it. scotch, scotch, scotch. i love scotch

Hah yeah, I love a flask or glass of whisky at hand when playing :D. And Dalmore is indeed excellent value, though still not cheap...

#954202Post 33 of 46

Re: whos into scotch >?

pinch for the cheaper side and oban or glenlivet for the pricier side. i love have about two shots worth w/ three cubes of ice.

and jib, try drinking it room temp. to each their own, but it is actually supposed to be room temp if you're drinking it straight. you get a fuller flavor.

Re: whos into scotch >?

is there a scotch that doesnt deliver a nasty hangover? otherwise im going back to grey goose i think...scotch destroyed me last weekend:lol:

#959322Post 35 of 46

Re: whos into scotch >?

^^ depends how you drink it ...

if you go straigh you wont be hangover if you mix it with anything , then youll pay the next morning

just got 3 bottles of Old Parr smuggled into Miami ... got them in the freezer ... man when this shit is cold enouh you dont even feel it coming down ... and when you pour it into the glass is so dense it looks like honey

#959327Post 36 of 46

Re: whos into scotch >?

^ Mix it with soda then you don't knock them back too quickly, it still tastes good and you won't feel too furry the next day. Obliteration + Rehydration = :)

Re: whos into scotch >?

If you're into scotch and I mean "Single Malts" not blended scotch, dish water like Chivas... check out the Scotch Doc. His taste notes will really help you pick out a flavor that interests you.

http://www.scotchdoc.com/tsd/tasting/notes/index.html

I use to drink scotch, here are some of my distinct whisky recommendations:

Lagavulin 16yr (Out of respect I pronounce it properly, laga-voo-lin) The Macallan 18yr (serve cold, and you'll really taste the vanilla) Laphroaig 10 yr (Just a sea side Iodine and heavy smoke flavor, great with a cigar) Oban (Was my general purpose whisky)

Worst Tasting whisky for me: Ardbeg, I wouldn't even cook mushrooms with that stuff.

Also, scotch goes very well as an after dinner drink, but if your with a girl that does not fancy the taste, have them try a speyside or highland scotch on the rocks with a shot of sweet Drambuie.

Also...

scotch!!!?????

oh........ u mean whiskey!! they dont make it only in scotland.
In the US we refer to scotch as whisky, add an "e" to make "whiskey" and then you're talking about the young American stuff.

#959454Post 39 of 46

Re: whos into scotch >?

Laphroaig is too much iodine for me, Lagavulin is gooood though. I'll check out that website, taste notes are getting increasingly interesting once you drink whisky regularly :D

My #1 is Higland park 18yrs right now, since Christmas. lol. Oh, I received a bottle of my favourite rum last night, too: Malecon anejo 15 anos...mmmm!!
