Need help with my first gear

Hi, I've been dJing for about a year and a half now and I have been using VirtualdJ software and my mouse, and some headphones. Well, the mouse is terrible for EQ control and I want to be able to do parties soon, not to mention, something that feels real:D

So I am about to purchase my first decks and mixer. All of my music is on .mp3 (all purchased :)) I have been reading here about CDJs and I'm a bit confused about the difference between the 200,400,800,800mk2. what functions separate them?

By the way my budget is max $2000 for 2 cd decks and a mixer. I will need a mixer as well, I was recommended the dj-m600 from doing research. So I ask for some advice, hopefully I can get a nice set up with the money . right about now, anything is better than a mouse and a screen. . .

Thanks in advance for your responses,

Haroun

Re: Need help with my first gear

$2,000 could easily get you 2 CDJ 400s and a DJM 400 mixer. That'd be a sweet setup if you want to go all the Pioneer.

Anyways, there are quite a few threads about all of that on this forum, Even on the first few pages!

Re: Need help with my first gear

That seems like an idea, the cdj400 looks real nice. Has anyone used the djm400 and djm600. It looks like the difference between the two is that the 600 has 4 channels. Why would you need 4 channels instead of 2? bear with me, i'm a bit new to all this:)

Re: Need help with my first gear

Also PSSL offers (lists) the price of cdj400 at 630(750) and the djm400 at 550 (700). Are these good prices or would I be able to do better than that somewhere else?

Re: Need help with my first gear

check electronicscity.com for some pioneer stuff

they have great prices and bundles

Re: Need help with my first gear

that setup proficient said would last you a long time and you'd be a lot better off on the decks if you had a pair of them in your own home that you can practice on.

Re: Need help with my first gear

Thanks, I think I am settled now on proficient's set up. Now just have to wait until the cdj400's come out. Can't wait!

Re: Need help with my first gear

2 channels = 2 cdjs.

if you want to add anything like a midi controller or a laptop, you need more channels... if your going to be spending that kind of money, i would opt for 4-6 channels just in case you want to add anything later... which will probably happen

i been saving my money for a setup of my own too... had a little set back, saw a piece of KAWS art that i absolutely had to have... 1/50 in the world. but still saving... lol

Re: Need help with my first gear

in my country, for the price of 2000$ you can have 2xcdj400 + djm600... which'd be more than an ideal setup for the beginning home use :) i wish i have that ammount of money, i'd not think about it at all.. 'd call the store and order, well now.. i dunno if the prices are the same there but i think it cant be that different so i'd suggest this setup.

tho.. u'll need some money for some good headphones also, in that case you need extra 100eu for some decent ones at least.. and in that case djm600'd be a lot.... so, think about it all. or try to save some more and take cdj800!!!!!!!! :D

Re: Need help with my first gear

should have gotten a better mixer - better in the sense of more functionality - at least a 3-channel one. Should have taken a look at the Vestax PCV-275 - less money, more channels, great build quality.

Re: Need help with my first gear

what do I need 3 channels for if I have two turntables?

#1221232Post 15 of 25

Re: Need help with my first gear

^^^just in case you buy a CDJ, it gives you more flexibility for growing as a dj.

#1221248Post 16 of 25

Re: Need help with my first gear

oh sorry, i meant i have two cdj's. it would be kind of pointless to get a vinyl turntable at this point eh?

#1221278Post 17 of 25

Re: Need help with my first gear

it is not pointless at all :) you just have to decide whether you wanna be a turntable dj or a cdj dj.. its up to you and your own preferences, what you think suits you more, as simple as that.

as for the number of the channels on the mixer you're choosing to buy, if you have 2 cdjs (or turntables), for the beginning, you don't need more than 2 channels.. but someday, when you get the basics of djing you might wanna try out something more, to use one more cdj or a turntable or a laptop.. something.. and for that you will need one (or more) channels more, thats it. the thing is that 2000$ is a more than an OKAY sum of money for the startup equipment, and for that one, you can afford a mixer with more than just 2 channels and i think you should go for it. :) someone mentioned Vestax, its damn good and solid and reliable as rock mixer, if you dont wanna spend that much for Pio and take djm600 for example. As for myself, i think it's better to take a better mixer that has more options like effects, samplers etc etc like Pio600/700 have to learn using it all cuz you'll need it, than taking some xpencive players.. 200s are gr8 for beginning, they have all you need for the start.. and after you're standing on the sold ground.. :) ..go for more. Saving some money by taking 200s instead of 400s and putting that sum of money for the better mixer is a better option for me. And i also think that 400s are overrated, they're not that good as they look, 800s kick ass for not that much more money than 400s cost.. so..

dunno, its up to you, just think about your wishes and what you wanna do in the future and try spending that money the best way. ;)

..and dont forget the headphones! :D

Re: Need help with my first gear

well then you could use the third channel for something like a Korg Kaos pad to add different sounds to your mixes, therefore making them stand out a bit more than your other local dj's.

#1221464Post 19 of 25

Re: Need help with my first gear

that was exactly my point. also, the idea of going with the more expensive/more feature-packed mixer - like the Pio 600/700/800 is a great one, coz you get to learn the industry standard at home where you can mess around with all of the features and get the hang of them in you own bedroom, and not in front of a club audience, while it doesn't matter if you learn on the CDJ 200s now, and then have to play on the 800/1000s at a club.

^ :!::idea::!: ^ exactly!

this! pay attention to what this guy just said.. if you buy good players you'll get the basics & more of playing on them, yes.. but you'll get the really basic mixer for the rest of money after you give a load for players, and then you'll have a lousy mixer and when you're playing a party you get a good mixer (mostly cdj800) and you'll catch yourself that you dont know how to use all of those adorable features it has, cuz you wanted to buy good players and not a good mixer instead. :) take 200s.. you'll learn everything on them, and you'll know how to play 800/1000s in a club also, for sure, and use all of their features! .. but you'll also know how to use a good mixer if you decide to invest in it instead of players, which is more important and gives you an ability to create your own style as a dj and differ from the rest of those 37745867 djs in the world, and you can do it everyday in your own room ;)

all the best! :)
