November 29, 2007 Briton Charged With Insulting Islam in Sudan By JEFFREY GETTLEMAN

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov. 28 — The Sudanese government decided Wednesday to charge a British primary school teacher with blasphemy, inciting hatred and insulting Islam after she allowed her 7-year-old students to name a class teddy bear Muhammad.

If found guilty, the teacher, Gillian Gibbons, who taught at one of Sudan’s most exclusive private schools, could be sentenced to six months in jail and 40 lashes.

“She will be brought in front of a judge, and now she must prove her innocence,” said Rabie A. Atti, a government spokesman.

The British government responded by summoning the Sudanese ambassador to the Foreign Office in London.

“We are surprised and disappointed by the developments,” said Omar Daair, spokesman for the British Embassy in Khartoum, the capital. “This isn’t the way we were hoping it would go.”

The charges were made as Sudanese government officials continued to resist efforts to deploy peacekeepers in Darfur and accused several Western countries of being anti-Islamic.

On Tuesday, the British ambassador to the United Nations asked the Security Council to address warrants against a Sudanese official and a militia leader accused of war crimes in Darfur, a troubled region of western Sudan where more than 200,000 people have died. Some Sudanese analysts wondered if charges had been filed against the teacher in retaliation.

The case started in September when Ms. Gibbons, who is from Liverpool, began a project on animals and asked her class to suggest a name for a teddy bear. Unity School, where she taught, educates Christian and Muslim students, many of them the children of wealthy Sudanese families and foreign diplomats. It has been closed until further notice because of the controversy.

The class voted resoundingly to name the bear Muhammad, one of the most common names in the Muslim world and the name of Islam’s holy prophet.

Ms. Gibbons then asked students to take the bear home, photograph it and write a diary about it. The entries formed a book called “My name is Muhammad.” Several parents complained, the government said, and Ms. Gibbons, 54, was arrested Sunday.

“We don’t name animals Muhammad,” Dr. Rabie said.

In Islam, insulting the Prophet Muhammad is a grave offense, and in northern Sudan, where Khartoum lies, it is a crime.

Unity School printed an apology in several major newspapers in Khartoum on Tuesday, saying that the school had not meant to offend Muslims and that Ms. Gibbons had acted without informing the school and had been fired.
Re: My name is Muhammad.
The protesters streamed out of mosques after Friday sermons, as pick-up trucks with loudspeakers blared messages against Gillian Gibbons, the teacher who was sentenced Thursday to 15 days in prison and deportation.

They burned pictures of Gibbons and called for her execution, saying, "No tolerance: Execution," and "Kill her, kill her by firing squad."
I'm really struggling with a question here: Is this behavior really representative of the way most Muslims over in Sudan and other surrounding countries think about things? Or are these protesters just a few whackjobs, and everyone else around there is personally horrified about the notion of murdering a woman for a stupid, ignorant mistake? I'm sorry to say, but I honestly don't know.

Certainly, there is intolerance everywhere. But at least when the KKK says ugly stuff over here in the US, others are quick to denounce it and to make clear that as a society this is not what we stand for. And while people may have differing opinions over Iraq, war, politics, religion...I would have to go far and wide to find anyone who thinks that a woman should be murdered for this kind of an offense.

What concerns me is that I never hear other Muslims criticizing these sorts of extreme opinions. And this isn't a small isolated cult we're talking about, this is the expression associated with a major national religion over there. I never hear of people in authority within these Islamic states saying "Shame on you...this is not the way, and this is not what we stand for as Muslims." Why is this?? Is this just selective media over here...or does this never even happen?

Re: My name is Muhammad.

OK, first off... why, why would a teacher, living in a Muslim country first off, surrounded by Muslims, go out of her way to do something so DUMB like this. Out of million names, she picks Muhammad? She obviously is ridiculing Islam and you expect people to let that slide? Someone posted a picture of a teddy bear saying " Jesus". Believe it or not, Muslims would also be angered by that because Jesus is a mighty messenger to them. Anyhow, that lady deservers whatever she deserves. Thats Sudan's decision. In regards to what she did as being good or bad? Not a very good choice. Miroslav was right, how do you expect Muslims to like those who make a mockery of them?

First of all, read the fucking article: the kids in the classroom named the teddy bear. She just went along not knowing any better.

http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iUYY9aFqMRYNGvVIYkw8XTkcTi0QD8T6Q7LG1
Gibbons was teaching her pupils, who are around age 7, about animals and asked one of them to bring in her teddy bear, said Robert Boulos, a spokesman for Unity High School in Khartoum. She asked the students to pick names for it and they proposed Abdullah, Hassan and Muhammad, and in September, the pupils voted to name it Muhammad, he said.
Furthermore, you clearly misunderstood my comment. While I don't think that she should have done what she did, I don't think that anyone should face jail time, lashes, or even death over a name given to a teddy bear, for God's sake. It was an innocent mistake, and she should apologize and be forgiven.

And finally, if you think that this woman should be severely punished over something this stupid...then I can only hope your own ruthlessness is returned to you TENFOLD the next time YOU make a mistake.

Have a nice fucking day.

Re: My name is Muhammad.

OK OK ... well dont believe everything your hear ... first off i really was disappointed by some of the comments around here .. i am muslim and i am from the middle east and really some comments were just childish or ignorant ... I seriously think that the wankers who accused the lady are probably very bad educated ... Yes making fun of a prophet is very badly perceived in our religion whether its jesus or mohamed or moses , but just naming a teddy bear doesnt mean anything , things are becoming really over exagerated nowadays .. some ppl are just looking to make the news and they dont know when they are doing something like that it fires back in their face and in the face of ppl like me who get caught up in the middle just because i am being stereotyped .. Last thing for anyone out there who doesnt know about islam , the middle eastern countries and most of the muslim ppl nowadays give the religion really a bad image and its been goin on since the f**** 9/11 thing , i really dont know when is this going to end ....

Re: My name is Muhammad.

to answer my own question from earlier (why don't Muslims and the people of Sudan loudly condemn these kinds of insane calls for execution, etc.?), I was heartened to see this article:

Muslims: Sudan Protesters Don't Represent Us http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3940765&page=1

It's in Muslims' own interest to denounce these sorts of barbaric expressions and events. As long as Muslims don't do this, they will find themselves on no-fly lists, regarded with suspicion by the rest of the world, etc. I'm not saying that is right, but it's reality; the rest of the world, still terrrified from a previous string of terrorist acts, is in the mood to place caution over trust. If the world sees Muslims and their governments rise up against its own violent factions like this, it will stop fearing them.

nice...so first, you argue that a middle-aged woman should be beaten or killed over a mistake involving a teddy bear, and now it's the old "I know Bush caused 9-11". I'll be sure to only consider your future posts for their entertainment value from now on

I very much doubt that the Muslims had much to do with 9-11. What did they do pray and building no 7 just fell down into its own footprint (no impact). The evidence against is just overwhelming. And that's something people can talk for days about, and believer will believe and nonbelievers wont.

OK well here we go...classes are over, I'm in a bad mood, and I have too much time on my hands today anyways.

Building 7 was very closely within the perimeter of the towers and by eyewitness accounts sustained significant structural damage when the main towers fell. Despite a ton of conspiracy theories I've read about, that is the best evidence that I have seen is that the building fell as a consequence of the main towers going down. Read this:

http://www.debunking911.com/pull.htm
"They told us to get out of there because they were worried about 7 World Trade Center, which is right behind it, coming down. We were up on the upper floors of the Verizon building looking at it. You could just see the whole bottom corner of the building was gone. We could look right out over to where the Trade Centers were because we were that high up. Looking over the smaller buildings. I just remember it was tremendous, tremendous fires going on. Finally they pulled us out. They said all right, get out of that building because that 7, they were really worried about. They pulled us out of there and then they regrouped everybody on Vesey Street, between the water and West Street. They put everybody back in there. Finally it did come down. From there - this is much later on in the day, because every day we were so worried about that building we didn't really want to get people close. They were trying to limit the amount of people that were in there. Finally it did come down. -

Richard Banaciski, NYFD Firefighter, Ladder 22
He was a firefighter. He was there and he saw it. There are plenty of other accounts from rescue personnel who were there and saw what was going on, and they give very similar accounts.

I'll take their word over yours any day.

Of course, I'm sure your own politically convenient conclusions are far too important to be disturbed by things like eyewitness accounts.

ok I'm out...

For a start building 7 was the farthest away from the towers and sustained minimal damage. There is plenty of footage an TV and i witness reports to confirm this. There's also plenty of qualified witness who dispute this as well. Like i said before believers will believe and non believers wont

Re: My name is Muhammad.

9/11 would be a hoax on the scale of the faked moon landings, i don;t beleive the people involved would be able to keep their mouths shut.

ownit you should be as ashamed chunky for spouting loads of shit. The mad mullars in Sudan are making a big fuss to gain favour in the muslim work, they would like to keep raping and pilaging in Dafur without western oversight. What a good distraction some dumb women and a teddy bear.

Just for the record I bet GWB was overjoyed at 9/11 it has provided an oppertunity for a nice war, gain some oil, finish daddys work, enslave the American populace and greatest of all re-elect a shaved monkey who couldn;t run a 7-11 let alone a former superpower.

And as for the Muslims, if your so clever and you want to teach the great satan a lesson then stop selling your oil. Turn off the taps and amercia is back in the stone age.
