Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
Congrats!!! That's fantasic. My dad quit over 4 years ago and while I was visiting him in Mexico a week and a half ago, he would come outside with me while I had a smoke because he still loves the smell of cigarettes. Don't know if the craving ever goes away. Guess I'll find out when I quit.

I quit smoking 7 years ago. I still get cravings while I drink. This past summer I went to Europe and smoked the 21 days I was there. I've not smoked since. Good luck! :D
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
yay Gatz! good going!
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
good for you Gatz. Been smoking strong for some time, I see myself dyeing with a cigarette in my hand. Bummer.
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
Quit in june when the smoking ban in bars came here. Still get the craving but I've found that taking a drag cures that as it now tastes like shit.
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
go swim laps. ;)
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
i used to smoke cigs then quit. started smokin cigars once a week. a few months later, i began to do some light runs to stay in shape. since then ive got more serious about runs & maybe smoke a cigar once every six months. just wasnt worth for my next 2 training sessions to get bogged down by smokin.
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
quit a year and a half ago and I'll be damned if I could go without one when I drink...so I give in when drinking, but no more than 1 or 2 and then I don't have any for a few weeks...til the next time I drink and give into it. ;)
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
I just started trying to quit today...arrrrrgggghhh!
...stupid cigs:what

Do what everyone else does when they quit and eat to your hearts content.
Then go cold turkey on food in 10 years when your Doc tells you you're overweight and have high cholesterol.
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
I quit 6 months ago too and the craving is still there, especially on weekends when I'm out drinking. I don't get it when I'm at work or home, so it's just the environment. I just spent 8 days in Hong Kong and smoked pretty much every night because we were out drinking every night, was developing a sore throat midway into the holiday and had to hold back. The mouth and tongue also felt like shit the next day :what:evil: Haven't touched a stick the whole week I've been back, and haven't felt the urge yet ... Friday will be the test
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
First of all good on you all of you who have given up or are trying to. I was an incredibly heavy smoker and tried everything to give !! I had resigned myself to being a smoker for life and a friend dragged me along to a smokenders meeting. I joined up and it worked !! I haven't smoked in years and don't have the craving either!! They teach you how stupid a habit it is and give you structured information on ways to overcome it, I don't know if they are anywhere else in the world , if they are sign up asap!! If they aren't, this book apparently has a lot of the information and tips that they use. Quite a few people I know have highly recommended it. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Allen-Carrs-Easy-Stop-Smoking/dp/0140277633
Good Luck.!!! It was the best thing I ever did. !!
Btw The only negative for me is that for a little while I used to dream I had been smoking and used to wake up in the morning feeling guilty:lol:
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
You will never fully get over the cravings while drinking. You will fully get over the cravings however while sober. I was a pack-a-day smoker for several years and eventually you just view it differently, but it takes a long time. Speaking of smoking, Marlboro just sold their office located in Downtown Manhattan for $600million, the must be loosing profit share in some area.:D
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
as far as i know(from my sister who gave up 10 years ago) she still gets cravings for ..'just one' which is never just one.
stick with it mate

One of the main reasons that Marlboro wanted out of NYC is because they were no longer allowed to smoke anywhere in the building...I guess they didn't want to be hypocrites ;)

Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
Two of my friends quit by taking Chantix. Neither have had urges to go back.

Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
6 mo's good stuff, they're probably the hardest but not the last
i think its offcial at 2 years, cause u spend the 1st year counting the months so whatever u have to do to keep the streak alive and then it changes into the second year ... its more of a been there and done that, u feel different, u dont feel like a smoker, i kept my fav lighter ... i like telling smoker how i quit cold turkey years ago sometimes j/k ... its a good thing ... keep it up
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
Good one Gatz. Keep at it.

For me it lasted till I started smoking again after almost a year without cigarettes. :what I have read books and logically, everything is clear to me but I still had the cravings for almost a year and thought I am missing something. It is especially hard because all my mates smoke. When we went out during weekends every time I smelled it I felt like a damn junkie gasping for it. But what should I do? Search new friends or never go out anymore lol?
Maybe now it would be easier since smoking is forbidden in more and more places...for example in the last months smoking at work and also in pubs and restaurants was forbidden which sucks for me at the moment of course but this is definately something on my wishlist for 2008 and I will try quitting again. Worst thing about this mental addiction is that you should stop before the negative effects are too heavy but stop doing something you think you enjoy and like to do THOUGH you can still live with the side effects because you are used to them is hard. But I still want to quit on my own and not because the doctor warns me after a check or in worst case when it is already too late to do something.

Thanks for the recommendation. I read on their website that they have success rate of 90% in their program based on their 12 month money back guarantee. I think quitting smoking by the patch, nicorette gum, or just going cold turkey all have around the same success rate of 5-10%. I really agree with the author's approach to the psychological side of the addiction. I definately think I am going to buy this book and see if it works for me.
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
I am on my 22 day withou the cig, it has been surprisingly easy to resist,no help of a patch or a book used to quit just a decision to enjoy my last cigarette. I have a very strong ability todo things when I decided especially with addicitions, all my close friends are smokers and I see them almost everyday, I hope that I won't be as stupid as last time where I went back to smoke 6 months after I had quit just because of the booze, now that both of them are a NO will see how long will I resist.
Re: I quit smoking cigarettes six months ago.
props man but i will say the 1st six are the hardest
i quit cold turkey almost 3 years ago and the 1sy 6 are the hardest but once u make a year u feel great and at 18 mos its pretty much gone
the cigars are the hardest to let go and next is hookah but thats all that gave me trouble ... i would say drink beer and start running (any other cardio sport is good too) ...
