Add RAM or new PC?

I'm using Ableton 6 to produce along with a lot of VSTs.

I want to upgrade my PC to run all the synths & effects. However my PC is 4+ years old. 1.6 Pentium 4 and only 640 MB RAM.

I was thinking I could get away with putting a couple of 1GB sticks in there.

But would it be more wise to just update to a whole new PC?

Help a kneegrow out thanks

Re: Add RAM or new PC?

it would definitely be more wise to upgrade to a new machine. you can get a new dell or gateway with Pentium dual core processors for under $700 that already have a gig of ram. Then just buy another gig to go with it. The new versions of Live just keep getting better on processor usage.

well.. i think if you dont have money and use live you can upgrade ram, pentium 4 works good but certainly if you have money ugrade a new machine

Re: Add RAM or new PC?

Definitely get a new PC a 4 year old machine is not worth putting any money into. The money is better spent toward a new machine.

why are we even still talking about this thread. Erik obviously hasn't made any more posts about it, yet we still keep talking about it.

Get a Mac if you work on music, you'll be more happy in the long run.

Don't know why PROG brought this thread back from the dead?

Anyways I did end up buying a new system and it's been great!
