For as long as I've liked edm people have teased me about it. Hardcore too, I mean some of my friends just don't let up about it. I've got a few good friends who are just as heavy into edm as myself, but the majority of them haven't a clue. I figure they just don't understand the beauty of our music. Most of what they hear is cheesy workout trance or some lame tune on a car commercial and they think all edm sounds that way. Even still, people like that would never take the time to listen and try to decipher our music from that rubish. I actually feel sorry for people who musical tastes are limited to what they hear on the radio or MTV. Anyway, I ask you all this after getting ganged up on at work by my co-workers all chanting their version of a techno tune, "Dun da da duh da, dun da da duh da, dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun dun (the breakdown) dun dun dun, dun da da duh da." :D

Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Not surprised people take the piss for listening to hardcore as that is a complete cheese fest full stop, but the majortiy of my mates like listening to indie but will happily come out to an edm with me and addmitedly say they enjoyed themselves.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
:(they spit at me
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
I always get this..your music is for the elitest..I also get if you listen to techno you must have a drug problem.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Do people make fun of you for being boring?
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
I hear about it all of the time. It mainly has to do with the fact that I'm in the military and most of these fools are either backwoods, thugs, pop freaks etc. The only ones to show any interst are the nerds believe it or not. haha. I have a shit load of money tied up in my equipment for spinning and wen I have a party all I hear is do you have hip hop blah blah blah. I thought by coming to Germany, this area would be more appreciative of the music, but since th American military has been here so long, our pop culture has infected the locals here. All they want to hear is hip hop or whatever. But if I head out of this local area a couple of hours I can find good shite. I always have to travel to hear EDM no matter what continent I'm on. :|
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
i hear about it sometimes... most people they say it sounds the same.
i think of it as their ears are not atuned to each of the different tunes an noises that make up a EDM track, they are stuck in US-pop mode and are not going to get out of it

Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
I quite often have banter with any members of the funky house crowd. They say my stuff is all the same/boring and never changes, I say their stuff is cheesy and has no real soul to it (I dont necessarily believe the second one 100%). I love saying to them; 'one day, when ur a bit older, you will come to learn and recognise'... So patronising, it gets them every time!
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
seems to me that listening to electronic music makes you a "raver" in most peoples eyes :x

Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Coworkwers: yea, a bit.. I give my boss Digweed and Hernan mixes though..
Other friends: Solution, I've found better friends.
Some of my other friends just like trance more....... at least they find something they like.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
sometimes , but those ppl are usually the ones who like hip hop.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
lol! no, most people dig it, cuz i'll only play the tite shit for them, so if they hate their basically a fucking idiot.

PLUR!!!!
The only people that say anything negative about it are usually the people that have shitty taste in music anyway. I cannot help people that only have the radio as a source of new music. My employees usually come into my office dancing if I am listening to EDM, it's pretty funny.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Music has been a bridge for all of my real friendships so most of my friends either already dug the music or liked it after their first club night or after listening wonderful discs like NE1 communication, or The orb.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
When people I know hear some of the stuff I play...They start moving their hands and arms and say, "I'm raving to this music" or "This is rave music right?".....Annoys me....
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
y'all need to move to Europe :)
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
^^Where everyone is cool??
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
not at all - where electronic music is like pop music.
and you get the "joys" of Blue by Eiffle65 and Barbiegirl by whoever that was. aye great stuff.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Yes, people around here especially because the closest edm club is hours away, meaning that the only nightlife around here revolves around top 40 bullshit.
"Oh so you listen to that uncy acy" "How many times have you done ecstasy?"
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
when judged for self-expression. One realizes those who leave you, where never with you to begin with. Thus non-attachment is personal freedom in any relationship or not. Only the Ego Mind craves attachment. Personal relationships, like Life... are a dynamic and continual process. So to, must the Mind be. Dynamic. Flexible. Water.
my friends are cool. i try to surround myself with people who have some intelligence and are open minded. most of my friends are not into edm, but have an open mind and are willing to listen and respect it. co-workers... some are fuckers, some are interested. i am pretty quiet about it at work. the less most people know about my private life the better imo. i have opened up to some people a bit, but the wrong ones, and it was just a pain in the ass.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
when people ask me what type music i listen to i usually give a blanket response: "techno" or sometimes "house music" i find that it's usually a big waste of breath trying to explain the difference between Music, and the bullshit on the fm dance stations, so i will just steer clear of any music related talk since i am totally biased and hate 100% of the crap on the radio. if i even get so far a to state my opinion on commercial music i usually come across as a total asshole since i tend to think the people that are satisfied listening to that trash are more simple minded than myself. :D
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
I have one friend who jokes that I listen to "boom chicka boom chicka" music. I joke back that he listens to "shit"
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
its normal in san diego and orlando and those are the only places i've lived...;)
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
I have noticed that people that have bashed me for EDM are either in the catagory that listen to KTU 103.5 here in NYC or they listen to 97.1 or 105.1. Either way those stations speak volume about who really should be laughing at who. Usually I just walk away and remind myself that most developers listen to diggers when they open up their IDE and start blasting away.
If they ain't with me, fuck em I always say.

Actually, I do wish that I lived in England. That is where my mom and her side of the family is from. 8)
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Doof doof doof.
I usually give people shit about listening to indie music 'cos it's so trendy now. Every dickwad around is either some emo indie kid or neu rave or electro clash whatever fuck. Take your music and shove it, leaves me with more space on the floor when Digweed swings by again.
And the people who don't understand EDM describes everything with a 4/4 beat as 'techno' and in their minds, they're thinking some kinda euro trash dance megamix music.
Seriously I just don't get it. Within the EDM genre there's such a spectrum of sounds and sub-genres ranging from breaks to psy to trance to tech to minimal to prog to house. The 'other music' are what sounds all the same to me

You should see some of the people who start tapping their feet etc. when I have my ipod on in the tram though:lol:
Another thing that pisses me off is people who say Djs aren't musicians, I actually got this one from a guy who play banjo in a bluegrass band!!
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Yeah i get everything that people have mentioned on here plus more. The shit thing is most of my friends think along those lines too. So what i am planning to do is get a gig in melbourne later this year with another friend who also likes my sound and open up a nite in Melbourne. Then i am gonna invite all my mates and co workers etc advertise the nite make it really special and make the nite a real success (hopefully). Thats my idea right now cause i am sick to death of trying to explain it to people and give them cd's to listen to etc because they never listen to them or if they do they listen to them once and say nah its not for me. So i figure if they wont come out clubbing with me to listen to "DIGWEED" i will be the "DIGWEED" and then they will go (cause i will be playin) and you never know enjoy the nite and more importantly the music. Thats what i think you guys should also do hey..
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
^ good luck with that. :) not a bad idea.
i don't get teasted much at all except for at work, which is pretty much to be expected. most of my friends dig the edm scene. i have certainly turned some heads of friends that didn't originally like edm as well.
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
never heard anybody not liking edm

Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
my mats are 50/50 on this one but my work mates are all into 70s glam rock or 80s new romantic, but each to there own8)
Re: Do people make fun of you for listening to edm?
Another thing most people into EDM have pretty broad musical tastes in general and listen to a lot of other styles and usually are open to new music whether it's dub reggae or avant garde classical. Secondly, some of this R&B/Pop?Hip-hop music has seem to borrow a lot of EDM sensabilities the sounds, the off tempo backbeat, trippier structures. You have to remember most people have become so accustom to having everything watered down, people expect it, so we must educate, sheez you even hear EDM in a lot of movie soundtracks and not just songs but soundscapes relating to the feel of a particular scene.
