Re: digital audio format wars which is best?

I use 192 kbps AAC for ripping CDs to my iPod. It's my perfect balance between good filesizes and sound quality. Keep in mind that AAC in not widely supported yet by many players.

Definelty the best when it comes to MP3s.

Although the best audio format is without a doubt, FLAC.

All the quality of WAV, but smaller files. Albeit slightly smaller file, but smaller none the less.

Every CD I buy goes straight into my drive, is ripped by EAC and encoded into FLAC compression level 8. The CD is put but into its case, filed into my CD rack and forgotten about. May sound strange but I am compusive about my CDs getting scratched. This way they don't have a chance to and I can listen to them in all their lossless glory.

The true is that all those kind of formats are pure shit anyway .wav is the best.

A FLAC file is basically a 1:1 compressed WAV. There is no information lost and it is smaller. What is "pure shit" about that???

Better sound quality than MP3 on lower bitrates, smaller files, written with streaming in mind, and getting more and more support. Even won a few listening tests.

Why hasn't anyone else realized how great aac is? (aac+ is better) I've seen some very impressive uses for aac/aac+, especially in the streaming audio category. :D Like you said, too bad there aren't many players out there for it.

Re: digital audio format wars which is best?

So whats the deal, can any of these formats be played in my car? Its an Alpine...it plays mp3's & wma's .... anyone recommend something?

Re: digital audio format wars which is best?

If you have enough free space on your hard disk WAV format is the best, you can get an exactly copy of any CD.

If the free space on your HD is the problem, MP3 format with 192kbp is the right choice, of course with a good encoder!

#268099Post 26 of 29

how do you encode a flac file? and does it work with winamp?

#268108Post 27 of 29
how do you encode a flac file?
Download the FLAC Frontend here, rip the CD into WAV, drag and drop the WAVs into the frontend, choose a destination folder and hit encode (level 8 is the highest compression level but unlike MP3 the only sacrifice in encoding level is size). Its pretty much just like using any other audio encoding frontend...standard stuff, nothing major. If you're really savvy you can integrate it into Exact Audio Copy and automate the process down to 1 click.
...and does it work with winamp?
Yes, there is plugin available on the Winamp website.

MP3 for being widespread and used .ogg technically good and even better compression .wma - it's a Microsoft format, so I don't trust it FLAC not bad either - but not widely used

Just my experience on the matter...
