Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

Hi all

I downloaded this from the promos and recommendations page to see if it was an improvement on his essential mix, which wasnt my cup of tea.

What a desperate mix this is from Sasha. Maybe I'm getting old but I can't see how/why people are falling all over themselves about this mix? I literally couldnt wait for it to end-can't recall one decent tune - just a series of tunes that sometimes started off good but then became crap.

Maybe it sounds great on a system? But this music is doing nothing for me at all - he's going the way of Digweed for me, which means less of my listening attention.....

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space?

i agree sasha hasn't been all that exciting for me either lately, but i thought for the first 45 minutes i heard, the set was entertaining... listening to the rest tonight. what i didn't like was a couple spots suonded like the set just skipped immediately from one song to the next and i had a hard time telling if it was the broadcast/recording or if it was him doing that... regardless, what i heard, i liked. and OF COURSE it sounds better live on a big system. the people that were there seem to really dig it too. i love recorded sets where you can feel the audience out. really gives the listener perspective to the occassion. i hope the rest of the set is good. we'll see.

"going the way of Digweed"?

he's no where close to being at a digweed level right now...

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space?

i thought the set was ok but what killed it for me was hearing the radio ids every 10 seconds. ffs let at least 1/3 of the track play

there must be a crack epidemic in Luton. Sasha has been on fire this year...

Jib - thanks for letting me express my opinion mate. I hope this board doesnt go the way of the GU board.

I just can't see all the fuss with Sasha and Digweed nowadays. It cracks me up when a mix of theirs gets put up and people are saying 'Top 5 mix sets ever' etc etc. It has happened with Transitions 3 - people saying its amazing and up there with the best etc..

Think I might stick to Nick Warren and Hernan Cattaneo....

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

we strive not to be GU mate.

i'm feeling frothy today so forgive my for mislabeling your thread. i didnt care for that mix either, but i move on to the next one instead of stating how much he or it sucks.

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

its been a while since i've checked up on you jib... the rate you were going you should only have about 40296742.5 gigs of music to catch up on. that's almost as bad as adam's water bill.

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

haven't heard this set, but i've been pretty happy with sasha's stuff this year. i'm not one of his bootlickers, but it's much better than the ride-scorcio-hoochie koocie man-in a state- into cowpander days

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

Really dug the thank you mix and the Emix seemed like on on bit of on on builder. Not always into all of his tracks, yet he finds on on way to get some flow going and once Sasha catches momentum, its on. As for him sounding like Digweed, they have been playing more together lately and they seem to be more on the same page adding to each other, instead of cancelling each other out, which they seem to do in the past. Catteneo does play on on wide variety of style and is one of the few people besides, Howells and Kevorkian who can play 8 hr sets and go through multipule genres of music, which makes Cattaneo special indeed.

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

yeah i find cattaneo TOO dinamic nowadays ... love him but nothing can beat his dark deep prog period

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

Its simple - Sasha hasn't been carrying around that much decent music on his hard drive: very few vocals, and none of the amazingly beautiful soundscapes that blew people away previously ... lets face it, he used to drop tracks that would stop you in your tracks on the dancefloor and leave you awestruck .. now I'm happy to hear something that is just pretty good and unclicky - he can have no excuses, Digweed had plenty of decent stuff in the summer and Hernan and Garcia always have tremendous productions to hand. Maybe the flunkies that dig out the "exclusives" from Mr Coe's server need sacking, and he definately needs to transfer his old vinyl on MAVEN. While I'll continue to support him and turn out there's always a sense of disappointment .. he's a bit like an old boxer who may or may not have that one last big title fight in him !

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

The beginning of his EM was good, and then it just went on a 1hr+ peak which got too much for me. It's all that synths and shit (when was the last time Sasha played a track with a good bassline?!). But I enjoyed the Thank You mix, shows what he can actually do when he puts his mind to it, and all in under 60mins.

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

Apart from both the EM and Sound of Space sharing a few of the same tracks (see below) they both suffer (or benefit) from being sustained peak-time sets. He really revs the joint up when he drops the Julien Jeweil - Air Conditionn? (Umek Remix) track but that's about it. Of course many might like that, but I don't mind it when the set builds up, climaxes, releases, builds up again and so on. Kinda reminds me of sex. That's why I really liked the Bonnaroo effort. Maybe before the summer is out someone will post a link to a 6 hour beach party set where he gets to stretch his legs a bit and show us a few hidden jewels that no-one else is playing.
Well that's your first mistake
There, that told you Greg! ;)

I love these arguments/discussions. They are literally the most pointless thing ever because there is no one on this planet who can label music as 'good' or 'bad' coz it is all 100% a matter of opinion. To people who love death metal it is the best thing ever to them and all this electronic stuff is total shat and no even real music coz its made on a computer. (They are obviously talking bollox but u know what I am getting at!)

However, I still enjoy reading/participating in them so..

Sasha sucks and has totally lost it

Digweed is on top form and has been since the end of 2005

I am right, anyone who argues otherwise is wrong. End of story..

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

Also the maybe because the sets are live from a club and he comes on after a warmup DJ, so he's gotta pump it up or carry on / maintain from what the warmup did. But I've never been a fan of his peak time sound, sounds like music to gurn to. :Acidbanana:

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

I haven't been impressed by Sasha for years. Seen him three times during that time, once with Digweed, and they were all average to good ,but nowhere near, great nights. The one with Digweed was the best. I mean in all aspects, mixing, track selection etc. A few train wrecks there! While I have a lot of respect for the part they have played in EDM, particularly Digweed, neither of them do a great deal for me anymore.

Transitions 3 is pleasant, and there are a few tracks I really like, but it don't touch me at all. I really want to be moved in every way by the music I hear. !! :)

It's not good or bad it's just what works for me!! I still like Nick Warren, he's getting a good run on my ipod at the moment.:)

Fucking nobody touches even close to where Digweed is now and has been for two years.

Sasha's a bit meh now but still better than he has been since 2002.

True that, the pre and post Ableton Live Sasha is quite different. I enjoyed his 2005 Maida Vale EM when he was just started playing around with Live. Now it's just, yeah whatever.

Same with Zabiela actually. I preferred him when he was making the promos, inc. his latest 4.4, but seeing him live and fucking around so much on the effects just spoils the musical experience for me.

Re: Sasha's set from Sound of Space? (another sasha bashing thread)

The reason I posted in the first place was because I'm just very surprised by the plaudits he has been getting for what I feel are very bland sets - most of the tracks sound the same to me.

And as for Digweed - don't get me started.......

his live recordings are always boring to listen to at home. i would think that being on the floor whilst he's clicking and pointing would be a lot better. like space wmc 2006 with digs, they killed it together. these internet sets always bore me too, but i couldnt pass up an opportunity to use that manpon pic. :p

Agreed, never was a Digweed fan until the past 12-18 months. Don't know why but it just started to grow on me and I can see why he is where he is. The man never seems to do any wrong.
