Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
bombfactory, joemeek, elemental audio, urs, ssl, sonalksis.... but it is also important which software u use, because VST1(Steinberg) doesn't support key in function....VST2 protocol in nuendo 4 supports it...other RTAS, AU also supports key in
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
thx bros! haha i use cubase!
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
new version of cubase offers side chaining....
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
really??? sounds good! i need look that
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
i use the sonalksis sc compressor, and right now can't tell a difference between the original and the side chained versions of the sound. Perhaps I'm not doing something right...i've got some more work to do with my drum programming and let you know when i finish my new track.
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
The new Ableton 7 also got internall sidechaining in their compressors and gates.
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
be sure to watch for the threshold on your compressor when sidechaining, it has a tendency to make your basslines have a popping sound, and that's not good. I had to re record a bassline last night because of it.
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
What do you mean by popping sound? If you mean distorted so that it crosses the 0dB border then I do not think that it can have anything to do with your threshold. Maybe you have your compressor on auto gain compensate (or something like that) . That could give plops, but not the value of your threshold. I maybe not get the term popping sound  But even if that is the case, you do not record something with a sidechain channel already working. Normally you would record something first and then when you got the clean/dry audio track or loop then you start applying a sidechain routing.
You made me curious about what you are/were doing :)
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
i know that you don't record something like that bro.
It had to do with the threshold, but it was also due to the sound i used and it's release and decay rates that fucked up the sound...now fixed and sounding even better.
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
Aaaiight its all good.
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
u got it bro, we are all here for the same reason...music.
so let's dance!

:lol::lol::lol::lol: wtf are you talkin about???
what does threshold on sidechain got to do with it???
maybe your original track is recorded badly or you got make up gain to hi
sidechain is only used instead of fader riding....pushing a level down, when a external (key input) is present, so it is like you would push a fader down and back up on a bass track, when kick hits, for an example!

no offense bro, just to make thing clear! ;)
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
each compressor that is worth it's weight has a threshold feature, and these make the compressor curve work in one way or another. And when you have it too tight it can make things get screwed up. Try using a Sonalksis SV-315 Compressor and then you'll know what i'm talking about.
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
In cubase I use Waves C4 or "Compadre", both work great
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
I've experienced what Jeffrey is talking about. Depending on your settings it can be subtle. It's a combination of certain settings that causes this. I've only noticed it when using it with a fast attack and release, particularly on basslines. And yeah, you should have a threshold setting. I'm using a freeware compressor and it has it:

Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
the clicking occurs because a compressor adjusts the volume of the track to abruptly thereby actually cerating a new high frequency sound as the wave is dragged - it shouldn't be too nasty with attacks longer than 5ms in my experience, but you can use that phenomena to create extra punch in kick drums etc.
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
i've gotten out of making electro, and that really seems to be the only type of house that needs sidechain compression. I'm working in a more dark proggy tribal vein now which doesn't really require the need for sidechain compression. Using nice amounts of eq, I can get the sounds in the right places in the mix without the need for extra compression.
Re: Compressor 4 sidechain!
if you wanna do SC on Ableton. I just found this site and they make a nice SC compressor and have a tutorial on how to use it correctly.
