I would just like to know peoples views as to when they think DJ's should retire. I personally feel that there should be no age limit, if you like what you do then thats that. But at what age do you think a DJ should hang up his/hers headphones:?:

Re: When should DJ's retire?

When they're not having fun anymore.

Re: When should DJ's retire?

Not able to mix and uninspired responses made me think of Oakenfold.

The bigger question is when Sasha and Digweed retire or slow down will the next generation be able to keep the music scene going?

Re: When should DJ's retire?

when they start to suck.

Re: When should DJ's retire?

I didn't know there were rules first of all and since there really aren't any retired dj's (perhaps a handfull) there's no precedent, rock star's don't really retire why would djs be any different?

When 85-year-old Melboune DJ David McLeish talks about "mixing it up", he does it with the poise of a seasoned professional. McLeish cites a genuine love of music and a well-grounded sense of feeling - and acting - much younger than his years as reasons for his continued success as Melbourne's oldest DJ. "I certainly don't feel 84", he says. "And even if I did, I'd still be doing this because I love it and I don't know what I'd be doing otherwise."

No wonder I haven't a seen him playing out anywhere!!

Re: When should DJ's retire?

When DJ Staples like Tiesto, Oakenfold, Sasha, Digweed, Cattaneo, Pappa, Deep Dish etc etc etc retire, I've no DOUBT the newer DJ's of today will be able to take the reigns successfully. Look at virtual prodigies like Zabiela and Holden. Kiki, Ellen Allien and Claude Von Stroke are ruling the minimal scene along with hundreds of others. I think the change is going to be sad but extremely exciting; just as the entire scene changed around 1990, so too will it change soon enough again and if history is any logical beginning point, it'll only get better:D:D

....personally, I'm not looking to see oakenfold trying to DJ for much longer. but thats me. shrug

Re: When should DJ's retire?

come to think of it, I'd like to see a good 2/3rds of the world's current popular DJs retire tomorrow.

Re: When should DJ's retire?

No one can replace diggers peakt time feeling after he will be gone, the feeling that you don't know where you are anymore being bombarded by evil banging sound.

Re: When should DJ's retire?

The real question i wonder about is will Sasha & Digweed go on tour in 20 years like the Rolling Stones do

#918197Post 24 of 32

Re: When should DJ's retire?

When like most of you stated, they start to lose the ability and/or no longer have their passion for it. When a DJ doesn't enjoy what they are doing any more it shows...the last thing you want to do is pay to see a DJ play half-assed

Exactly. Or when they start going deaf Frankie Wilde style...

Re: When should DJ's retire?

 1. when they only do it for the money

 2. when they get their tits in a flutter about unauthorised recordings of their live sets.

 3. When they wake up every morning with a high pitched whine in their ears and start talking too loudly.

 4. When they've been admitted for the 57th time to a methadone clinic.

 5. When they keep waking up in a hospital E.R.

 6. When they keep banging out the 712th remix of their 1st superstar solo production.
