Should humor have limitations?

Ok, I'm not known here for my subtle sense of humor, I think everybody's gonna agree. But really, how far can you go?

A few days ago, I spotted a flick on Youtube where stand-up comedian Hans Teeuwen owned a couple of stuck up muslimas who invited him to the show in an attempt to bash him for making fun of them and their religion (Teeuwen shits openly on every religion btw, not only on islam). For those who understand Dutch: klikkie

One of the points he made was that in a free society you should have the right to mock everything. And that's what he does: he makes fun of religions, mentally/physically handicapped, gays, ..., just about everything. On the other hand he said that as a result from that people are bound to get hurt sooner or later. So what? Live with it.

Totally agree: live with it. Why is it that this or that joke is politically correct and another is not? FUCK THAT SHIT! In political correct terms you could even say :p:p:p

Or to conclude with something another stand-up comedian, Alex Agnew, once said in his show: "I fucking hate jews... Nah I'm kidding, at least those guys can take a joke." :D

Re: Should humor have limitations?

There are heaps of jokes I wouldn't tell myself [ and not just because I'm crap at telling jokes! :)], but I still laugh at them, and I suspect a lot of people are the same. I laughed at the jewish joke :D

I don't find people getting damaged funny though.

Re: Should humor have limitations?

for me, the only limitation that humor should have is that it has to be funny

my wife and i love every time when a comic takes it too far and pushes the boundaries of comedy.

Re: Should humor have limitations?

Please do Jenks, I'm all ears :D

Some time ago I used one of Hans Teeuwen's jokes when I visited friends. It went something like: "You know what I think is hilarious to do? Well, you go out and buy a dead baby somewhere. You put it in a crib and call a babysitter. And then when you come home at night you go like: "So, did he keep a bit quiet tonight? Ah ok, Lemme see... Huh? Well goddamnit, he's completely dead bitch! Just look at him, he all blue like a fucking smurf bitch! Oh now you're gonna start crying, you cunt? You can stick that 15 euro up your ass. HA!" DUDE THAT'S FUCKING HUMOR! HA!"

Oh I forgot to mention this was at a baby shower

Re: Should humor have limitations?

I think that it is cool to tell jokes about stuff that people can help/choose to do/believe in etc, but jokes about physically or mentally disabled people for example are a different story. The suffering and sadness that the individual in question and those close to them must have gone through overtakes anything that could be interpreted as funny for me..

Other than that, fire away...!!

Re: Should humor have limitations?

Andy, check out this piece from Alex Agnew (the guy from the jew joke in post 1). It's about a microphone specially designed for Stevie Wonder's special needs. But sometimes that mic caused a little technical problem (fast forward to 0:22 and piss your pants)

Now what was that about people with handicaps? ;)

Re: Should humor have limitations?

Hans teeuwen is very over the top, totally over the top actually but it's so over the top that it becomes funny, I believe you can laugh with anything as long as its obvious it's a joke. so bring it on i say

I totally agree. This aspect has nothing to do with PC, it's just disgusting and wrong. I'm not one to tell people what to laugh at or whatever, but I lose total respect for comedians that go down that road. Thats just me. Other than that, laugh your ass off.

The only way I could learn Dutch is if I knew someone who spoke it well. Then to hang out with them very much. So Kinky. I'll be on my way to hang with you and Yao and learn Dutch, then I'm off to Germany to learn Deutsch.:)

Re: Should humor have limitations?

There might be things that are really beyond joking about, but sometimes, laughing at wholly inappropriate material can be therapeutic. I remember once I was working on a case that involved the murder and rape, in that order, of a 14 year old girl. We received the autopsy photos, and without going into enormous detail, they haunt me to this day.

There was a time when it was actually worse, though. We knew they would be put before the jury and were knew we had to get used to them and find a way to deal with them. Without hitting on the specifics, by the time we were done, we were roaring with laughter. Not that there was anything even remotely funny about what we were saying -- I suspect it was just such a decidedly unfunny situation that anything to break the ridiculous tension in the room was welcome. Gotta do what you gotta do to get to where you can deal with that shit and do your job.

Lest there be any confusion, I do not believe there is anything funny about the killing and rape of anyone. Sometimes, though, the real purpose of the joke is not to be funny but to cope.

Re: Should humor have limitations?

as a mexican i dont think racial jokes are funny, perhaps you think they are because youre rarely the main point on a joke, it is not that i felt disciminated because i havent, in fact i cant even feel myself related with all illegal people migrating to the US, the problem here is that this jokes tend to generalize all mexican as we all were illegal/ignorant/beaner delincuents and thats realy unfair, i know racism is unfair as it is, but i what i want to highlight here is the generalizing thing (ask beansancheez, he usually makes this kind of jokes)

Re: Should humor have limitations?

Should their be limitations on ignorant behavior. It would be nice. If there was not an audience for over the top kind of comics, those people would being doing something else. Do we really need millions of people putting videos of themselves on You Tube just to link it to their friends for the Mon. morning water cooler talk. No But people do it anyway and it serves a function of self reflection just as the over the top comics do. Saying or doing something most people would be uncomfortable doing in public, say like the Amazing Racist, people think his shows are funny, are they offensive sure, but the context taken is in personal reaction to the show. Or we could just ban all comedy except Seinfeld and That 70's Show, now wouldn't that make for a better world.
