Paul Oakenfold: Before Ibiza I was playing LL Cool J and Run DMC but when we came back I was playing acid house and Cyndi Lauper. We had baggy trousers and were dancing like maniacs and everyone was like, 'What the fuck are you lot doing?' I started Spectrum on a Monday, which was all acid, and Future on a Friday night, which was indie mixed with dance. That's how I ended up remixing Happy Mondays, the Cure, the Stone Roses, and touring with U2.

"We got to Amnesia about 2am, and I dropped a pill. There was a big electric storm that took out half the island's electricity. Our half. I ended up sitting outside a bar in San Antonio, buzzing my tits off. It was like we had won the lottery and lost the ticket"

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

That's called Youth/experimental times lol. I am sure right now people in their late teenage times or early Twenties have hell of a fun all the time and are not complaining at all about music going downhill, Life getting harder, the sky beeing not as blue anymore as in good ole times and all that crap. You are old farts, that's all. Accept it, it helps! ;)

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

Can't stand Oakenfold myself, but I can't deny the impact he's had though. Will we ever see some one in the scene again who has had as much influence as Oakey, Diggers, Sasha, Cox and so on?

Maybe it was easier to stay up for multiple days without the threat of losing your job, but top dance music today is better than ever.

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

i remember seeing oaky once, he was snorting lines behind the decks and playing like shit and thinking that people werent going to notice lol

haz i love that mix - gu was so cutting edge then.

even tho paul isnt one of my favorites, he did used to be the king of the wheels of steel... its not that i think that dance music then wasnt as good as today, in fact, the early milennium progressive house from austin leeds, lucien foort, diggers and others was prolly my favorite era, however, today there isnt the same feeling of direction, or togetherness there once was... at least in my city... when a great international prog dj comes, all the old crew comes out of the woodwork and gets hammered. its always so good, you see people you havent seen in years and they are happy and it makes you long for the past... but then when you go out on a regular fri or sat, its just fucking lame.

as well as that, i have found that with the crappy psuedo e shit you can buy, the "real" gear has slipped in quality... you get disappointed and dont get to the level you used to be and its all a bit lame and makes me feel like a grandad...

"in my day sonny, they were larger and worked quicker and i was off my tits rooting your grandmother until the sun went down again"

:D those were the days.

Okey is a class A Twat that was in the right place at the right time...period.

(P.S. If you want to argue with me about this, Please do so after watching the full 80 mis of his Bourne Conspiracy sessions at miami, the first few minutes of which is the SECOND video on page linked below. The first disc of this is - despite highly questionable mixing - probably my favourite EDM mix ever.

It was hardly a case of being in the right place at the right time. Back when he was doing Spectrum at Heaven he and his partner where 30 grand in debt to the club. He released his partner from the deal and took on all the dept himself. Fortunately it worked out for him.

Or them CD's he handed out for free of the Goa mix back in 1994. It must of cost a fair bit of money to do that.

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

If you want to talk about twats how about throwing a broken CD into a crowd, gashing someone on the head, then packing up your gear and running away. Or branding at 17 year old kids as people who have no way of being able to understand whether they like a certain DJ or not.

#1348578Post 25 of 44

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

I think that there definitely was effort involved, it's just that little bit of effort reaped far greater rewards back then.

Now to set yourself apart you have to bust your ass ten times as hard because due to the internet, the competition in the dj/producer arena is expanding faster than ever on a global scale.

So will we see a rise in djs that influence the game like Digweed, Cox and Oakenfold? I think no.

Also dept=shorthand for department, not assets owed as I think you meant Chunks.

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

Same as Pete Tong, mixing isnt Oakies forte but as what has been said before boy could he pick a set. His sets were epic especially in Cream during the residency and he put so much into that time too. I was very lucky to see that on my doorstep and enjoyed it to the max:D. The thing is dj'ing in the 80's apart from Ibiza was a Uk thing but now especially with the internent is a global thing. Apart from Dave Seaman of course who has more air miles than any other dj.

He spotted a niche in the market and did very well with his talent and fair play to him isnt it all about maximising ones talent and sometimes exceeding it. Hats off to him the boy done good.

Just ask Si and Chris to see if they enjoyed themselves in the folklore called the courtyard

picking a set ;) imo

Did you look at the video? nothing he did.. giving away free cds, discovering e, saving a thousand starving children etc. justifies that. Proper Twat.. and hes wearing one of those mini Keffiyeh scarf things around his neck too ..cunt.

No I didn't look at the video. I've tried it several times a day all weekend and all I get is some woman's voice telling me to wait. Then I've waited and waited and waited and nothing. Fucking hell call a man a cunt for wearing a scarf, does that make Carl Cox a cunt to for his head gear on his Global Underground.:?:

Do you think Sasha is a cunt for gashing some girl in the face with a broken CD, then once he realized what he had done he packed his CD's up and ran away. Or maybe a Twat for them ridiculous trousers he wore on the boat party last year .

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

To slate Tong and Oakey is completely wrong. What harm have they done the dance scene? None.

What have they done for the dance scene? Alot.

You may not like their music policy now, personally i don't. But to say they are 'cunts' or 'twats' is abit harsh!!

Ok their mixing is not to the standard of John Digweed etc but there has to atleast be one set of theirs especially from late 90's early noughties you like!!

And i agree with Greg, i don't mind the sound of Tong's voice over the EM's. It's what i grew up listening to and what i'm used to.

Thats exactly what I was trying to say none of us are perfect and people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones ...........lets feel the love and the two gents concerned Mr Tong and Mr Oakenfold we should champione what they have done

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

The thing I've always admired about Pete Tong and Paul Oakenfold is their ability to identify catchy tunes and some great tracks.

Pete Tong's Essential Selection cd's in the late 90's, early 00's were some quality track selections, and I felt similarly about Oakenfold's efforts as well. I might not like everything they chose, they might have not been top quality mixers, but they managed to select some quality tracks.

For better, for worse, they opened up electronic music to the mainstream and opened the doors for countless others and made the careers in some cases for some of the biggest acts in electronic music.

#1352485Post 37 of 44

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

i thought the flow of oakenfolds mixes that is to say the order of the tracks he would select were usually second to none as far as telling an imaginative journey. It's almost like being a master story teller but using music as the medium. Few dj's that I know seem to have mastered this and are usually the ones that tend to rise to the top.

#1352573Post 38 of 44

Re: How Oakenfold discovered ecstacy

my wind up seems to have worked.

Anyway, I was not there when the “said” incident happened with sasha. I’ve heard lots of similar stories about all kinds of djs including Oakie that I would not repeat here, because I’m not sure of their veracity.

If you get a chance, see the video and look up clips from his reality show called “The Club.”
