A place I know little about but hear about all of the time. Does anyone on MS have any real experience visting/living in Dubai? Whats clubbing like? What are the women like? What is the culture like?

Ramadan = it?s illegal, to eat, drink or smoke in public from sunrise to sunset:shock:

Re: Dubai

There's a lot of money being thrown at that place. My work is muscling in on the action (an engineering consulting firm). I'd love to get over there as I love stinking hot weather.

It's one of the more liberal places in the middle east, but still quite conservative.

I dreamt about working there a few years ago as the money is excellent, tax free, and you get an insanely huge thankyou bonus upon leaving the country (think 10% of your salary mulitplied by the number of years you worked there).

Cost of living is going up dramatically though (rental prices just keep going up), and it's no longer such a good place to make a killing, but I'd still love to do it.

Re: Dubai

My plan is to move there in about 5 yrs. In aproximetly 2,5 yrs I'll buy (leasehold right for a period of 99 yrs) a summer residence on the world, since the palms are much too crowded form my taste.

Theres so much money in Emirates that things often look almost garishly but it also enables you to think big and live big so its the perfect combination for me!

yeeehaaa cant wait 8)

Re: Dubai

Hmmm, looks too artificial for my taste to be honest. If I was to buy paradise property, it would be in the Seychelles or Dominicana. But then again I'm a nature guy.

Floridaorange: ramadan doesn't apply to you since you're not a muslim. And as for the women: they're hot as hell, but get facial and chest hair around the age of 25 ;)

Re: Dubai

i have family over there, its hot and humid. It doesnt matter if he isnt muslim they dont allow drinks outside. The only places you can drink are in the hotels thats all and the clubs. I heard the night life is great as well. some big clubs over there

Re: Dubai

It looks nice... but I don?t like places that the only thing is "show the others all the money you?ve got"... fuck em, we you die, you can?t take your millions.

Re: Dubai

^^dont be so negative about the money - its just a pay means and thats all, everything else is enjoyment!

Re: Dubai

There was a hilarious article in the NY times last year(?) about immigrant workers who wouldn't stop tacking cellphone pictures of women on the beach. I'll see if I can find it. I agree with Kinky, I'd rather have a nice house out in the country

Re: Dubai

I hear 25% of the worlds cranes are in Dubai at the moment. Would love to go there for a few months. Its a really tacky but fun place im sure.

Re: Dubai

the boom is about to go bust from what I have heard. I heard in 7- 10 years when the world is off oil (we will never be totally off oil but..) that place is going to be a ghost town.. But the buildings are good for me and laseraid!! Keep on building.

Re: Dubai

Dubai rocks... Been going over there almost every year since 1990 as I have family there, so Ive seen it rise from the shit hole it was back then to the mega "Sin City" as its known by the locals now. Its a lot of fun if you can bare the heat... Lots of cool places to go out etc. Lots of tackiness there also for sure, but most of the places are pretty fun to be at.

Even the tallest building in the world is gonna be in Dubai now: http://www.skyscrapernews.com/news.php?ref=1018

I havent yet uploaded some of my own pictures I took when I went there this past March.

@runningman: Not really mate. They are building all these off the wall things like a ski resorts and theme parks because they want to get off their dependence on oil. So Dubai will continue to grow IMO. f.

Re: Dubai

@ frisky I know I don't believe it either but I met a guy that does a lot of business there and that is just what he told me.. They are def. trying to diversify there economy for sure.. Now that Haliburton has moved there I don't believe it either..

Re: Dubai

A lot of money transfers go through Dubai as well. For instance manufacturers of (fake) medicins in India transfer their hundi system (informal money transfers) through that concrete boil. I bet a lot of crime/terrorism money passes through their banks too...

Re: Dubai

I'm sure it's an awesome place to see and I'd love to go visit...but I'd wait to move until the hordes of Islamic militants infesting the whole surrounding region are eradicated in the next world war. Nuclear war in nearby Iran may not enhance property value.

Re: Dubai

ive been there twice...the architecture is mindblowing. the pictures do it no justice...

i was there in 2003 because i was deployed in the gulf at the time and jebel ali was our port call. jebal ali is about a 25 min taxi ride to dubai. bought some "bling bling" watches at the gold souk. lol.

Re: Dubai

Those high gas prices we all pay are part of the reason Dubai is what it is today. The buildings do look cool, but the show of wealth like snow ski resorts in the desert and islands made to look like the world is ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to visit and see for myself, but some of Dubai is over the top.

I question why the Islamic terrorists have not attacked Dubai. Part of Bin Laden's hate of the West is how we live. Dubai appears very Western in its show of wealth. Possibly the answer is some of that money goes directly to the terrorists in exchange for no terror attacks? I've heard this is the case in Saudi Arabia and wonder if its the same in Dubai.

Damn, I'm with you on this one ddr! It may be a little overboard, but some of the buildings over there look absolutely incredible. Look at Vegas... totally overboard on their buildings but that's what makes it vegas and nonstop 24/7!

I know this pic isn't of an actual real setting but it looks sick, nonetheless!

i promiss you, the world will be nowhere near off oil in the next 7-10 years. dubai is gonna be just fine for the next 50-100 years, and by then they'll hopefully be smart enough to diversify their economy.
