Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

Superstar Ibiza DJ Steve Lawler chatted to Skrufff this week and revealed that he?s seriously considering cutting back on international DJ dates to make way for new DJs. "I?m 31 now and I?ve been touring for a long time and right now I?m thinking that I don?t want to be touring the world at the level I am at the moment, when I?m 40," said Steve. "There?s no way. I don?t think I?d be able to, even if I wanted to."

The Birmingham raised house/ progressive star also suggested new DJs? lack of experience can offer them a distinct advantage over today?s stack of big name jocks. "When something is new to somebody like DJing, they bring in a certain amount of initial excitement that?s humanly impossible to recreate when you?ve been doing it for years," he pointed out.

"I still get really excited to listen to my new music and I still get nervous before gigs, but it?s not the same as it was for me 10 years ago. But every industry needs that kind of fresh excitement, it?s a really positive thing. If a thousand people start DJing tomorrow, within that thousand they?ll be some good talent somewhere. And good talent shouldn?t be hidden," he added.

much respecct to lawler. he's a stand up guy. and a monumental size dj for being only slightly taller than 4 feet.

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

That's quite humble of Lawler. I'd still enjoy his sexy tribal sets anytime. He brings in a great crowd

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

That how a DJ who's had a brilliant career should step aside. With some dignity and self respect. You've gotta admire a guy who's not gonna disapoint clubbers because he no longer wants to put in the effort. Good for you Lawler. Thank you for respecting the clubbers and the music. We need to see a few others follow suit. We'll miss them but, the right thing to do is give a shot to the next generation. :D

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

good point Soul Keeper ...

I used to drive 3.5 hours each way to see him in LA, im glad i did it then because i might not be able to catch his music now ... personally I love his sets and still listen to Lights Out 1 on the regular. I hope after a while he gets the feeling back.

#263681Post 7 of 32

^^ i don't think he's lost the feeling. i just think traveling overseas everyday takes its toll on a person. he'll probably sleep for a couple months straight if he took a break. :)

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

I love his Dark Drums and Lights Out compilations and going to miss his spinning. I do think it's admirable for him to allow new djs to come up through the ranks. Just hope there is someone that is just as good to fill his place.

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

Definite props to Steve on this one. I honestly noticed his lack of enthusiasm the last couple times he visited Toronto. The tracks are great and flashes of his past brilliance would surface but from beginning to end in my opinion his set didn't remain focused.

For a guy like Steve its probably in his best interest to find a venue he loves, close to his home and studio and develop it. Let us come to see him instead of him travelling to us. Danny Teneglia does this and it only increases the excitment when he does decide to travel. I assume that it also allows him to maintain a level of performance that he is satisfied with.

Regardless, he's right. There is so much talent out there that isn't being booked because of the safety of bringing in established talent. If more of the vets take this approach it might make promoters take a chance from time to time. Isn't that what this scene is all about: change and something new?

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

if they play often like 3times a week it kinda becomes like being on tour which they will maybe become like a robot knowing every beat and cue point, sometimes playing now and again but better special sets are the way forward

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

never heard of this happening before... a dj actually retiring... thought they would all go til they had no more :)

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

I think this is smart on his part and others should take his advice. He has put out some banging cd's over the years (Nubreed and Light Out 1) and has built up the tribal scene, let's see what the new talent can do. Don't want to see him go but when he does he'll be greatly missed.

I'm sure the Rolling Stones said the same thing at 31.

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

Let's hope he does one more "Lights Out" party @ the WMC in 2005!

#264017Post 19 of 32

Good 4 him, now make way 4 me. HA

I give him a lot of credit to see things in that light.

#264021Post 20 of 32

he will be back in the future.. He will probably take a couple years off and then have a huge return.. Fuck i hope so.. i would hate to never see a Lawler set.

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

I will still be listening Steve Lawler sets even if he retired one of the best

#264046Post 22 of 32

Wow, he sounds intelligent and genuinely nice.

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

Lawler is great, love his sets, would be a pity to not see him again, but I have enough of his sets that I could still reminesce(sp) Go out on a high note, don't be a Oakenfold

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

Hehasn't said he's retiring, he's just wants to cut back on all his travels. This makes perfect sense. I'm at times shocked when i look at his site and see him gigging for like 15 times in a month - its gotta take it out of you.

Also what with Lights Out 3 (the final instalment) due out in the new year and an artist album some time soon, we're gonna be hearing a lot more off of Lawler in the future!

Lack of enthusiasm? I really doubt that. Just because he doesnt prance around the booth like Tiesto doesnt mean hes not into his gigs. Would you say that John Digweed doesnt get enthusiastic about his gigs because he rarely cracks a smile or doesnt jump around the booth like a madman like say someone like Danny Howells does? I doubt it.

Steve like PVD, Digweed and countless other DJS have never been ones to go nuts in the dj booth, its just their personality. I dont think it means that they arent 'enthusiastic' or not into the party.

About the not focused part, well thats your opinion and your entitled to it. I've seen him spin a bunch of times over the course of the past four years and personally i've liked the livesets that i've heard out of him this year more than any other times i've gone to hear him play out. Needless to say I dont think hes lost his focus at all.

Yea I dont think hes going anywhere anytime soon. (thank god)

;)

He said when hes 40 he cant see himself gigging around the globe as much as he does now. Hes only 31 years old now. I can see him taking a break/cutting back on some of his gigs but like you said, with the release of both his artist album and the final installment of 'Lights Out' due shortly I think its pretty safe to say well still have plenty of chances to see the dirtiest man in house music rock the living shit out the worlds best clubs.

#264317Post 27 of 32

I think this is a commercial management trick

#264603Post 28 of 32

I can definately understand his point...with all those tour dates and stuff, it's gotta get hectic! I don't know what I would do if it he retired for good. That would suck. For those of us who live in ares that only bring big DJ's, it could suck if he started a trend. Instead of new DJ's getting a chance, these clubs will revert back to their hiphop/pop/trendy days. I could definately see why he would want to cut back though. And I'm sure with LO3 coming out he's not retiring just yet. As long as he makes it back to WMC '05 it'll be all good!

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

He is one of the Top 3 DJ's I still have not seen so far. He had some pretty good things to say about the dj circuit.

#264679Post 30 of 32

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

Lawler not breing on the circuit is a terrible bomb to the scene. He is an incredible DJ and brings in a crowd that motivates and encourages the peolpe to come back again again and again. Its a sad day when he steps away from the booth.

Re: Steve Lawler plans to step aside for new DJs

Props to Steve Lawler. There are so many unknown DJ's that deserve more recognition. I think it's pretty obvious that there is only so much room at the top, and these are the same names we've had for 10+ years, progressive house needs some new blood and fresh ideas.
