Gym rant

I've just about had it with the gym I'm currently training at. REALLY.

I'm paying ? 600 per half year to train there. That's effin expensive (the last gym I went to only charged ? 169 per half year), but this one is close to my home and I don't mind paying for quality and extra services...

BUT

Last week Thursday I was doing overhead triceps pulls on the cable pulley (a machine like this), an exercise I do on a regulary basis. When I hooked up 80kgs and started a new set the machine tipped over and fell on my back (total weight 120kgs) because the crappy screws in the floor broke off.

I gave the manager hell about it. If I hadn't held the weight and fell on the ground with the pulley on top of me, I probably would be in the hospital with a serious back injury. Apart from that, locking a machine like that with ordinary screws is just irresponsible. 100.000 apologies of course and a promise that the pulley would be repaired CORRECTLY asap. More than a week later it's still standing there (without the screws) and the manager allows customers to use it while leaving them in the dark about the grave risk of the thing tipping over again.

So two days ago I asked the guy to measure my fat percentage. When I started to train there I weighed 95kgs and had lost most of my muscle volume (got lazy) and since I'm near to "dry" now and my muscle volume is back, I wanted to know how much my fat percentage dropped.

So here goes: I dropped from 95 to 88kgs and gained muscle volume like hell, but my fat percentage dropped ONLY 1,5% according to him and his measures. "That's really weak man, you should work out more and eat more proteins instead of carbs."

I totally lost it at that point. Especially because of the last remark since the tosser heavily promotes his crappy protein diets.

"What the fuck man, do you actually think I'm a complete retard?" "Huh? What do you mean?" "You've tampered with the results asshole, you only want to get your hands on my money." "You're being rude now..." "FUCK YOU! I'm being rude? You're insulting my intelligence with your little swindle you fucking thief!"

Can you believe this shit? He charges a shitload of money, doesn't give a damn about accidents with his equipment and tries to trick people with phony test results.

I admit I always try to squeeze every last eurocent out of my own clients, but I don't lie, tamper or fool them. Douchebag

Re: Gym rant

I quit my gym. No need to go. Waste of time getting out there and money. Bought a mat and fitness ball. Small weight bench is next with basic weights. Home gym is easy and so much better.

Then I use This. Great stuff.

Mate, if you're strong enough to rip out gym equipment from its' moorings you probably don't need to go to the gym.

Find a Hi-NRG night once a week where you live and you'll get you're weekly dose of aerobic exercise.

And for strength training look up some more adventurous positions in the karma sutra and you'll be fine.

Re: Gym rant

Oh, I'm so gonna kill the motherfucker now. After the pulley tipped over on my back I've been having back problems. Nothing really serious in my world since I handle pain quite well (I'm sure Yao does too, it comes with the kickboxing I guess), but yesterdat the weather changed (rain, wind, ...) and this morning I could hardly get up when the alarm clock went off. Pain killers aren't working since it feels like it's blocked. AND I WAS GOING TO AN EDM FESTIVAL THIS AFTERNOON!!!! Dognabbit, €45 down the drain :(

As for everybody saying that I should train at home: you people might be right. Already have a hometrainer, a heavy bag, a bench, dumbells and a barbell with weights at home. I bought a platform speed bag yesterday and I'm planning to buy an all round set up.

After all it's not such a bad idea: I buy my amino acids, HMB, MRP, BCAA 'n' stuff still at my old gym (the current gym doesn't even have creatine drink, effin losers) and more important: Erzina is coming over in Sept, so I don't feel like spending every night at the gym after two years of missing, craving and seeing each other only a few days every two months. Call me a softy, but after having a long distance relationship for two years already, I want to spend some time with her. A home gym is the only solution I can think of...

Here's some professional advice. Sounds like you've strained your lumbar spine.

 1. DO NOT even think of sitting on anything low anywhere. i.e. no couches, lounges beanbags etc. Sit on a standard kitchen/dining chair, roll up a towel and place it in the small of your back.

 2. DO NOT have a long warm soak in a hot bath. You'll get in alright but will probably need to scream for the neighbours to get you out.

 3. DO NOT stay in bed. Keep moving within your comfort zone.

 4. Use heat liberally. Whether it's a hot liniment, hot shower, hot water bottle, microwable heat-bag doesn't matter.

 5. Take an anti-inflammatory at night before you sleep to assist you in the mornings when you get up.

 6. See a physio. (or the Belgian equivalent thereoff) DO NOT see a chiro. You do not need to get your back cracked/manipulated at the moment. That blocked up feeling you describe is muscle spasm. See someone who does massage and other soft tissue techniques.

GOOD LUCK

 1. What's Hi-NRG? Really, I don't need aerobics when I spend 4 to 6hrs per week thaiboxing.

 2. It's kama sutra, karma is something that comes back to you when you've been a bad boy. Btw, that book is on my shelf for more than three years now ;)

Re: Gym rant

why all the aminos and creatine shit, you don't really need that do ya. unless you want to pursue a bodybuilding career... i just drink a protein shake after i work out and eat a protein rich and fat reduced diet, works for me :)

Re: Gym rant

^^^ simple question, simple answer: I started with powertraining as support for boxing (together with running). But if you wear out your body for more than half an hour with high impact training like boxing, your body will go catabolic. This means that instead of burning carbs/fat to give energy to your muscles, your muscles will start to "feed" on their own mass and reduce muscle volume. Yup exactly that's the effect bodybuilders try to avoid with that stuff...

Not that I need volume for boxing, on the contrary: the weight only slows me down. But Erzina gets off on Vin Diesel types.... See how that works? ;)

Oh and as for the creatine: it hydrates your muscles, giving you a strength/endurance increase of 10%. Pretty interesting when you're boxing...

Re: Gym rant

Definitely liable for an unsafe training environment, I bet that if you ask the manufacturer they will tell you ordinary screws aren't enough: this shit should be pinned to the ground with bolts, I'd say 6 to 8 mm at the least. I think you can without a problem sue him provided you can have someone (a lawyer) check it out and maybe take pics. If he hasn't obeyed to the installation instructions (and they'te bound to be there for equipment like that), I think you might have a chance.

About the fat percentage...I have never done that to be honest. Sounds like it might be a scam, just don't forget about dehydration from training and possible other external factors. Fisheye seems to be on point with what he says, and usually when I fuck up a back muscle the best thing to do is putting heat on it and just keep moving. That actually goes for any muscle, no sudden movements but no inactivity either -it makes the pain go away and keeps it 'flexible'. Doesn't necessarily help with the healing as such but alleviates better than painkillers.

I've done Amino acids to provide the building material muscles need, but have as yet refrained from creatine on a regular basis, tried it and did indeed find that you train much harder and longer. The problem with it is that you can use it for 6 weeks and then have to take a pause of about 2 weeks: your body makes it as well, so you end up adding to the natural levels which is usually harmful if done for too long: one effect is that your body itself will lower the production as a reaction, it will become 'lazy'. Same goes for testo and other hormones or stuff that is 'native production' of your own body. So use that stuff in moderation, always.

Oh, and I'm hoping to switch to Krav Maga soon...I want to do some real street fighting again. Will probably have kickboxing still there on the side tho ;).

Muscle is designed for 2 things only : load bearing and joint movement. After the initial acute stage of an injury ~24 hrs muscle needs to move to heal. In my experience this goes for any soft tissue injury that does not require surgery. All cellular changes in our body are chemical events. Put simply, muscle growth or healing is a chemical response to the mechanical stimulus of movement or exercise (whether that be weight lifting, martial arts or aerobics). Complete bed rest and ceasing all movement has now been thoroughly discredited as a treatment option for these types of injuries for many years. I tell my patients a little bit of pain is acceptable as long as you can maintain your range of normal movement. If it hurts too much stop what you're doing.

Re: Gym rant

Why don't you just sue their asses for the hell of it (even if you don't need the money), that'll teach them, especially since the equipment landed on you.

Did the guy measure your bf with calipers or a machine? 'Cos the machine isn't accurate.

Home gym: Just get a well designed power rack that lets you do dips and chins as well, and a bench, and you're set.

Re: Gym rant

If you are in serious training with some serious exercises then you need to go to the gym. Some things just can't be done at home (squats, deadlifts...) and as the supplements go if it makes you better looking or better at training why not use them.

As for the screws issue, hell you can even press charges.... But anyway give them hell, make them fix it and always keep complaining if something is wrong, it's your health (back).

But there is one thing that interests me... Are you working out for yourself or for your girlfriend???

#896604Post 32 of 36

Re: Gym rant

Not true ... all you need to squat is a power rack, a bench for presses and other exercises, and you perform deadlifts with the same olympic bar on the power rack but resting on the floor. Throw in a pair of dumbbells and you're set. That's provided Kinky has the space for the plates and the setup.

#896610Post 33 of 36

Re: Gym rant

Alright, that is true, but power racks are big, and you need a lot of plates... He needs a lot of dumbbells too (or plates for dumbbells). Shoulders, arms, chest, back all different weights. Then when you're training with heavy weights you'll probably need a spotter (training partner). For me, there is nothing that can replace a gym. If he is training with light weights and wants a ripped look than it's a different story, but as he said he is after the muscular look (he gets ripped at boxing) it is all heavy and hard. In my opinion the gym is the only real way

#896615Post 34 of 36

Re: Gym rant

Sueing: I read that a couple of times already and really, that's a no go for me. I prefer solving conflicts outside of the court and moreover, given the speed of Justice in Belgium, it could take years before there's a final decission. I have better things to invest my time in.

@ Skotina: The first gym I started training at three years ago was a power house (like we call it here), a lot of bodybuilders in other words. It's funny how all of a sudden you realise putting on volume gets addictive. So in other words, I was already pretty pumped up when I ran into my girlfriend. But well yeah, since she's loving it, I'm keeping it up for her. Really funny as hell when she sees me on the webcam when I get home from the gym at night: priceless look on her face. So yeah, I guess 80% of the training I do for my woman. Hey, it's a motivation like another, right? ;)

As for gym/home gym: most of my core exercises I'm doing with free weights instead of with machines. I already have a nice collection of plates, bars 'n' stuff, so when I throw in a basic allround machine which can take significant weight, I'm set.

Yes I have the space to install a gym room and when I put mirrors on the wall, I won't need a spotter. I'm not pushing more than 120kgs anyways since I don't feel like blowing up like a balloon.

#896719Post 35 of 36

Re: Gym rant

I've actually lowered the weight and increased the number of reps each session. And usually make sure the amount is enough to make my mucles burn -that way I hope to stay strong but not grow too much. I'm pretty slender, so a pumped up build would probably look very unnatural on me, while a more athletic look is prolly more compatible with me, and I won't slow down either. And the climbing i plan to pick up again will only add to the athletic part, it's a great complete workout like swimming.
