Just as subject says. What tracks/sets would you play to a person who never before listented to progressive, or any kind of trance/house musice for that matter?

And what do you consider the must-hear productions?

#263487Post 2 of 66

this is actually a really good post.

kudos.

i have zero input tho, since prog puts me to sleep. (although i'll admit, Dave Semen's EM is pretty good for prog)

but i'd like to see some responses nonetheless.

cheers

I always pop in Jimmy Van M's Bedrock CD1 for any newbie... I acutally gave a copy to a youth pastor on an airplane a few months ago. he was so excited about it that he actually told me that hre was going to play it for his entire youth group!

Re: First time listening to progressive

I tried to get two people into the whole genre with NE1 and it miserably failed! There's no accounting for taste.

Re: First time listening to progressive

I?m sure this has been a topic before.

NE1 has got to be the dogs for starting people off. Saying that i recently played all of the Luke Fair@Moonpark to a group of non belivers and they loved it!!

Re: First time listening to progressive

I wouldn't play anything from Sasha for first timers unless they were rolling their nuts off. I remember when I first heard Sasha I thought it was boring. I've played the Orb's "Orblivion" though, and people seem to like that.

#263516Post 8 of 66

I've gotten about 20 people hooked in with airdrawndagger and james talk sets

Re: First time listening to progressive

i played "Sasha - Involver" for a few friends who were into other music, and they really enjoyed it due to Sasha's use of more "palatable sounds," i.e.--his use of guitar in the shpongle track, etc. They mentioned it was more musical, which I agree with, but also understand they usually don't like to set foot outside their 'comfort zones' and challenge themselves musically. This cd seemed to let them "ease-in" to the progressive pool. :Bingo:

Deep Dish GU - Toronto

Re: First time listening to progressive

Digweed Bedrock. POB's 'ba ba - humate remix' could do the trick...

#263542Post 13 of 66

Jenks thanks for approving my topic.

I notice that most of the stuff listed is rather chill.

I myself have played Airdrawn Dagger and GU Dipdish in Toronto(for it was the only audio cd with prog I had) to couple people - it got them interested. Perhaps, any track or set would do with the right presentation.

We need more youth groups like that! The salvation is in music(sepciffically prog). I would be down for going few times a week on daily basis.. if we'd listen to that.

I still love Sasha & Digweed @ gatecrasher 2001 OH and a Definate must for any newbie is, Sasha @ Digweed @ Miami Arena, Delta Heavy tour, WMC (emix)

I'm partial to Digweed's Essential Selection from February.
I always pop in Jimmy Van M's Bedrock CD1 for any newbie...
yeah a nice one there. also Taylo Synesthesia popped into my mind. maybe it's the platoon-esque opening. also, CASS Fire/Prologue is a nice album.

#263561Post 18 of 66

ive always thought about that.. when people come over to my apartment and im listening to some stuff i think is really good... they dont blink an eye. i think they're crazy, they probably think i am

id probably play a noob the usuals.. northern exposure etc. maybe tranceamerica (dont mind the name, its one of my fave progressive cds ever still) before moving them on to some jay tripwire or something :)

note: ive also found that selecting stuff like chemical bro's, prodigy, crystal method (stuff theyve probably heard a little of on the radio) is a pretty effective way of getting them to at least listen

Re: First time listening to progressive

Deep Dish - Renaissance Ibiza is an old goody, but I don't think it really matters what you put into the CD player, if they don't have an open mind then theres no chance. As long as they don't complain that it's the same beat over and over & don't say that it takes no talent to make music on computers; we'll get along fine.

#263575Post 20 of 66

Great thread.

I vote for Deep Dish - Rennaissance Ibiza and Cass' Spundae Mix.

there are some youth group/Christian et Al groups that do throw raves, events, etc. STRICTLY for the music!! :D :D :D

I once had the Sasha Xpander EP on for an old girlfriend of mine (re: friend not FRIEND ) and she dug "Baja" :)

I've played Disc 2 of GU Seaman Cape Town to a few non-prog people and they absolutely loved it.That disc is a really accessible piece of prog-trance IMO.

I also got people hooked on Athens CD1,but then again that is a bit of a 'house-party' disc.

I would also add that anything by Deep Dish would be good,as they always play some quality house/prog that is very accessible to the new listener

#263656Post 27 of 66

I would start with Deep Dish - GU in Toront. After one or two weeks I would come back with Jimmy Van M - Bedrock. After this start he/she would be a progressive house fan...

agree with you here! I used to try and share what I loved musically with those who weren't into it. I don't bother any more, waste of time IMO. I share now with those who ask.

Re: First time listening to progressive

i actually gave one of my unbeliever friends a listen to day and started him off on MMII then introduced him to hybrid. he really got into the hybrid stuff so there may be home....

tomorrow i might introduce him to GU 22 see how we go :D

#263684Post 31 of 66

GU24, Balance 005, or Holden's E-mix are the 1st 3 things 2 get some1 inline with my tastes ;)

For something a little less up front I'd probably go from something like Involver.

Good Choice one of my favorite E-mixes ever. I also want to add John Digweed-MMII & Sasha:GU-San Francisco.

Re: First time listening to progressive

I would say the best prog to play for a newbie would be Hernan Cattaneo. The man plays great music and very appealing to the ear. If he/she doesn't like it, their a lost cause.

I agree here - got a few people hooked thru Perfecto South AM CDs

Digweed's GU019 would be a good choice.

Re: First time listening to progressive

A friend of mine, who swore she hated all that noise i play, recently sat and listened to all three hours something of Nick Warren at the TLV from earlier this year. Since then she has progressed to Digweed's GU19, Holdens Balance 005 and Way Out Wests recent proton mix.

This weekend i thought i would move her on to Pappa and Lawler!

Renaissance - Sasha and Digweed the mix collection.

Journeys by Dj's 005 - Digweed

Leftfield - Leftism (open up, what a tune!)

Re: First time listening to progressive

You should really start with S+D's Norther Exposure. (North) As classic as it comes.

#263888Post 39 of 66

i think the person needs to be open ... i have found that people who like movie opener music tend to like progressive and electronic. I remember my first time ... all i heard was untz untz untz ... i put my headphones on and listened to MobbDeep. Of course this was my year in France and dafttrax just came out with homework ... it was everywhere in France.

hesh.

Re: First time listening to progressive

I have always had a difficult time getting my friends to enjoy prog house. I have had some luck with Digweed Sydney Disc 1. Most girls like a little Deep Dish. As soon as they say all the songs sound the same I turn it off b/c they will not listen and give it a chance.
