Re: Is less more?

i just have a few that i know are really good for bass, and ones that are really good for keys parts. I got rid of Massive and some other programs that take more time twiddling than composing.

I have been finding more and more presets for the preset programs in ableton, like operator. There are some nice free build-ons for that around the net.

i thought you might answer first i dont own operator. But have a few others. I think i might choose a 3 or 4 and sell the rest cheers jeff

Re: Is less more?

you still need around 15-20 synths at least, otherwise you'll be stuck with same sound all the time. imo

Once you learn synth construction, type of synths and it's modules it becomes easy. So you know with what synth you can create a certain sound character and which one suits you best and have wanted modules others don't have. So i try most of them to find a quality ones.

But at the end of course less is more, but that must be real quality.

And if you are to lazy to take time to find a real unique sound, that's just a shame. Tweaking and searching for new sounds comes with a music production, like running comes with football.

the produccion is the best

Re: Is less more?

don't forget that most of the biggest producers utilize the same sounds in quite a bit of their own songs. You can still hear the same sounds in Prydz's stuff today as you could two years ago. Same with Angello...although he now uses guitars too.

Re: Is less more?

make sure one of them can do a good rhodes electric piano sound. Cause that is a major sound in electronic music, and you never know when you might want one in your track.
Hi all i have a few vst's and want to downsize what im using. How many vst's instruments do you guys use and is less really more? Thanks
I use two or thre for basses and synth sounds. I have two or three for pads I have two or three for stabs and REALLY strange noises. I have ONE for drum work.

I find having tons of vsts and presets have nothing to do with making original sounds. If you have one REALLY good synth vst and you know how to use EVERYTHING on it you cna create almost any sound you can think of.

The only reason I even use more than one synth is some of them have cool effects build in that others don't.

For example Synth1 is a free analog synth. There are a million presets for it but when I jump on that thing I can make almost any damn sound I can think of on it.

I think learning to use what youy have and purchasing better effect vsts is the way to go.

Re: Is less more?

It's pretty easy to be bogged down with an endless supply of plug-ins; and depending on the complexity of each one, it can take forever just to learn what each can do.

Get a few high quality synths and learn them to the fullest. This was the best advice ever given to me.

that's not true, if you know theory and options you know what each can do in a minute... that is just for beginers, that always miss the main point, to learn synth structure and basics of effects. Once you learn the basics it all becomes easy, but most never does, so that's why you think that way....

LEARN BASICS!!!

Re: Is less more?

you got that right, you can do so much simply by learning how to use delay right.

Re: Is less more?

Depends on what you are talking about. Not absolutely certain about everything, but I think that the bottom line is system resources. Does the installation of a synth or plug in use up more resources? It slows down the boot up of a sequencer (I suppose when it scans your plug in directory). Does anyone know if certain plugins use up system resources even when they are not actually in use probqably some do, but I wouldn't think that it would be that much. I read somewhere poorly programmed plugs will eat up more resources than efficient code. (I'm PC XPSP1) Processor Speed, RAM, Virtual memory, and my soundcard pretty much set the limit for how much i actually can use at any given time. If you monitor your system resources you will see that certain plugs have bigger drains than others when in use. I always felt that more is more, in so far as, having more tools, more power, more options, especially since the tools are constantly evolving, but good music doesn't care how many plugs you have and neither will the listener.

Re: Is less more?

The only reason you need more than a couple synths is if you don't fully know how to make sounds from your synths. I can make almost and lead or bass sound using just synth1 which is a free vst synth. I guess if all you know how to do is use presets than it would be neccessary to have alot of different synths.

Some synths come with really cool effects built in which may be a reason to use them. I personally only use about 4-5 vst synths. I got rid of all but about 8 of mine. If two different synths have the ecxact same construction. 3 lfos 2 filters ect. than they should be capable of making the exact same sound.

I think money is better spent on effect vsts

Re: Is less more?

Yeah once you know how synths work then its fairly easy to make your own sounds, just be wild and experiment with all the nobs then you'll learn. I'd say start off with a few but sometimes a new synth with its patches can be quite inspiring so I cycle through lots of free ones, while keeping the work horses for the typical sounds.
