The following article tries to paint a rather depressing view of the future of the the dance mecca of the world http://travel.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/travel/destinations/spain/article2072859.ece : some of the best sets i've witnessed from the likes of Sasha, Digweed & Hernan have been on that island - it brings out the best in EDM and, at times, makes it truly magical. Worse still, this could be a look into the future of our clubbing lives - if the authorities can mess with somewhere that is known to embrace club culture, and (crucially) depends on it economically, what do the coming years hold for us ? Looks like I'll have to be spending my future summers in the eastern block.

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

Great, yet another legendary place for edm that has a bleak future before I can even get out to experience it.

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

I can't believe they only get 10 cases a week of drug or alchohol intoxication and they think they have a major drug problem. but not an alchohol problem of course!!

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

Geez we can get 10 cases a night in some of a large club out here! There's no way that figure of theirs is accurate.

A couple of things to note: it won't kill the island off economically. Just say hypothetically all the clubbers disappeared, a different set of holiday makers would be tripping over themselves to make use of the island.

It looks like I'll have to get my ass in to gear and get myself over there before it all disappears, but I find it hard to justify the couple of grand which will be blown in one single week. :(

Good point.

You don't need Disneyland to have fun.

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

Top of my list for me after taking a careful look at their website is Warung Beach.

Anyone up for a meet up and can buy me a ticket? ;)

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

It's really sad ..i call for a clubbers protest against the authorities there .. if amsterdam can have drugs legal then ibiza is more applicable

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

DiDi - you're right, alcohol causes far more problems and South America may well be the way forward - although the movies I see always give me the impression that I'll get kidnapped by guerillas, plus being English in Argentina may cause a problem, even though I love Argentinian's and was a small boy when the counties had their troubles ! ... I've always wanted to make it to Buenos Aires, Punta del'este, and (now) Warung Beach. The good thing with ibiza is it takes no planning for me and is convenient - I go back in 10-days for Digweed at Space ... I booked a cheap flight last minute, can get a reasonably priced hotel and know all the local restaurants that give me a fantastic meal that's easy on the wallet.

Indeed, I'd say this is a lot of sensationalism ... everybody loves a good juicy story.

I don't think Ibiza is going anyhwere any time soon. It would be nice if it's less crowded... I'll be there in 4 weeks.:D

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

Thinking about things, when I return Space and Amnesia will be rammed as usual, and getting a table for lunch at the Jockey Club will be a nightmare - what dates are you there Hypo (I assume you'll be at Cocoon) ? Sasha plays Amnesia for Radio 1 on 11th Aug (although then rest of the bill is crap) and Sander & Hernan play Renaissance on the 23rd. I try to check out a night I haven't previously each year - as Amnesia was closed, I checked out Morillo at Subliminal. He suprised me, the place was rammed, and it had a great vibe with some really good summer house (which makes a nice change occasionally).

I'll be at the Operahouse for Sasha. See you there.

As for Ibeefa, don't worry storm in a teacup imo. All be forgotten like a bad shag and dodgy kebab!

Great post man thats some bad bad news and sadly it has begun here in Miami as well with clubs as space that are simply running because everyone thinks its the hottest club around when in acctuallity its a shithole

#890391Post 25 of 45

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

I don't think I will be heading back there anytime soon, which is a shame as I've got some fantastic memories from the island. But it's just too damn expensive for me to justify. I went for 3 nights last year and did ?600 and only went to one club. And I don't do drugs; the money just went on beer - 12 euros on a beer is just scandalous. If it keeps going like that the island will die economically.

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

same journalism, different year.

ibiza always sticks its middle finger up at the critics. It was meant to be saturated and dying a death when i first went in 2000.

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

And from what I've heard it is gtetting worse price-wise - my friend is out there nowand it will be interesting to hear what he has to say on how things are this year.

#893537Post 29 of 45

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

The expense can be relative and depends on how hammered you want to get.

Pacha was 35 euros entrance and 15 for a large measure of jack'n'coke. When I went to Renaissance the night cost me just over 100 euros (with 4 drinks) ... that's ?67 for a night out with Van M, Diggers, and Hernan and pretty competitive with English prices (especially a night out in London).

Space next week will be free (before 10.00) or 15euro entrance (getting in a bit later but still early) with Cox doing an early stint on the sunset terrace and Diggers playing between 3 and 6+ hours (rumour has it her will be playing the new terrace after his Discoteque slot). Even with 6 x large jack'n'cokes that still works out at ?67 !

Safely budgeting for ?100 will give you a cracking night in the worlds best clubs with the best sounds systems and DJ's, playing their arse off because the island inspires them.

Laying on a nice beach costs nothing, and you can still eat great food at decent prices too.

BTW - the Motley Crue story was that they used to rub their dicks with kebab meat after shagging groupies to put their wives and girlfriends off the scent !

The only bad thing about my 9 day stay is that the Dollar is at an all time low with the Euro and the pound, so everything is going to be super expensive for us... the Euro just hit $1.38 and the pound is 2.05. I'll still have a lovely time and will continue to go back year after year no matter how shitty the dollar gets.

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

It's the same every year as fletcher says...
Ibiza is always about to be over. In 1933, the German artist Walther Benjamin wrote to the Jewish thinker Gershom Scholem complaining that the island had become too noisy and packed, that the special magic had gone and it was all over for him.
http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/travelog/2007/07/is_this_the_end_of_ibiza_clubb.html

1/2 a million Brits every year says the White Island will carry on in one form or another...

#894499Post 32 of 45

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

simonr - that theory is fine...if you limit yourself to 4 drinks... but that doesnt happen for me I'm afraid. It's still a scandalous price no matter how you look at it. Consider Bedrock in Heaven, London. ?5 entry, drinks ?3 - can't see that being beaten

true indeed. Since I've been down here I've been surprised by just how shitty and commercial the music here actually is. But the local scene is actually pretty cool...that's where I hang out.

^ I must add, that if you have the cash and the time/stamina then yes, Ibiza cannot be beaten. It will always hold great memories for me, I went there when I was 17 as a young innocent teenager and couldn't believe the world I was in!

Amnesia are having a major fucking laugh with their drink prices ... the place gets closed for a month, now its €45 entry, €12 for a Budweiser and a whopping €18 for a jack?n?coke !!

Was going to check out Cocoon, but now i?m now boycotting the place !

Re: Is ibiza on its last legs ?

And you wonder why people migrate to drugs from alcohol. Economically it sounds better and could be more efficient at those prices for alcoholic drinks. Is water that expensive as well? Maybe its better to drop a couple capsules than get drunk? Cost less, lasts longer and you might end up dancing off a few pounds while your out.
