BOSTON (Reuters) - Paul Oakenfold is famous as a DJ, but this week the pioneer of "trance" dance music assumed the unusual role of playing with a 75-piece orchestra for well-heeled, champagne-sipping classical music lovers.

By playing in one of America's oldest symphony halls with the Boston Pops, he is remixing the conventional image of a DJ -- a job that has itself morphed from obscure nightclubs to celebrity status as DJs tour the globe like rock stars, put their spin on popular music and produce original work.

In an interview with Reuters, the 43-year-old Briton said his Pops performance reflected the evolution of DJs and dovetails with his work scoring music for Hollywood films such as "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Collateral."

"I'm comfortable with an orchestra because of working in film. I'm just trying to attempt more and more," said Oakenfold, who moved from Britain to Hollywood five years ago.

"From these couple of shows we are already in talks maybe to tour something around the world and hook into local orchestras," he said. "It's a challenge for me and something that I would enjoy doing."

But playing with the Boston Pops in such an intimate setting caused him some anxiety.

"I'm so used to people dancing right here in front," he said from the stage of Boston's Symphony Hall, surrounded by CD players, a turntable, synthesizer and mixer.

"They are just going to be sitting there looking up at me, so I'm a bit worried," he said before performing.

Oakenfold, one of the most influential figures in global club culture of the past 15 years, is known for remixing songs by Madonna and U2. His audience has developed beyond nightclubs into stadiums filled with thousands -- at fees as high as $50,000 a gig.

MOODY ATMOSPHERICS

The Boston performance, touted as a world premiere by the Boston Pops, was ambitious.

Oakenfold mixed samples and pre-recorded drum tracks, "scratched" on a turntable by nudging a vinyl record back and forth against the stylus, and played a synthesizer as the orchestra performed and a drummer kept pace with an electronic drum kit and another synthesizer.

The piece, part of a nearly two-hour "EdgeFest" concert by the Pops, was written by Los Angeles composer Felix Brenner and drew loud applause.

As Oakenfold played, some of the electronically produced parts were barely audible over the orchestra, creating moody atmospherics, although one section featured thundering electric bass drums that clearly startled the audience.

"You're talking about human versus the machine," said Brenner, describing the addition of a DJ to the orchestra as a live "symphonic remix."

"We're pushing that envelope. I approached a lot of different people to do this but most were scared of the idea. But Paul said 'That sounds cool.' So we got together with it."

Oakenfold's two-day Pops performance comes as classical music is gaining popularity.

Thanks to "crossover" acts such as Josh Groban, classical was the fastest-growing musical genre in 2006, with album sales up 22.5 percent. Meanwhile, many popular genres fell, including rap which dropped 20.7 percent, and R&B, which was down 18.4 percent, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Oakenfold, who last year toured with Madonna and remixed Justin Timberlake's single "My Love," said the music that made him famous -- house and trance -- will never be as mainstream as hip hop and other music popularized by the likes of MTV.

"You just don't have the artists and the videos, radios are not playing it," he said.

The Boston Pops, famous for light classical music, is in the third year of its "Pops on the Edge" series that has also featured singer-songwriter Aimee Mann and soulful Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket as it seeks a broader audience.

I am sure you all bash away, but this is actually pretty neat....I will be looking forward to the outcome :)

Not sure if you guys are aware but Oakenfold is responsible for many movie soundtracks that I am sure you would be impressed with (Sword Fish, James Bond, etc.) Just because he is/was a trance dj, doesn't mean he doesn't have talent....he is one of the reasons the acid house sound of the 80/90's came over to the UK...he has done a lot for the industry....he is also in a band, did you know that?

I am aware of all this, and I still don't like the guy. There is a remix he's done, of Olive's You are not alone, which I can't put into words how much I love. But... I begun to listen to Wink and then Diggers, and all the sudden the magic Oakey seemed to possess was gone. His music is, compared to these two's, is for lack of a better word, unintelligent. Sure, it works on many levels, but somehow lacks depth.

this isn't a new concept, and he's definitely not pioneering anything. He's just getting exposure because everybody who doesn't know what EDM is still knows who he is.

Jeff Mills has been writing techno sheet music with the Montpelier Philharmonic Orchestra. Videos of ravers getting down to it are on youtube. it's cool stuff... check it out

One word: bunkka. After that load of cheesy pop bullshit, I haven't been able to take any of Oakenfold's "revolutionary" music projects seriously. But I'm always willing to be proven wrong

What a pretentious prick. If it weren't for his GU:007 mix I'd have him shot.

Re: Pioneering DJ sets sights on Hollywood

^ ^ There were many interviews and articles about that at the time that the Swordfish soundtrack was being worked on. When Oakie was asked, he would dodge answering the questions. That made people really suspicious. I know that Freeland was guilty of that for years as well. He'd pay others to make his music for him.

Re: Pioneering DJ sets sights on Hollywood

I don't like his attitude as well but I am not negating the fact that he produced good music in the past and this will be more a producer than DJ thingie after all. The Swordfish movie soundtrack was delicious, his early EM were a pure mind trip full of diversity and his radio show (forgot the name) where he played fitting EDM tracks in the background while a story teller told a fairy tale were awesome if you were in the right mood. He has a feeling for moods and atmosphere so this venture - though mixing classic and EDM is not new as Adam said which I must admit - is still rare so I am looking forward to it. I can be dissapointed later when I heard it - or be surprised that it is actually good. I just think this is a playground he could do something with if he is already on a non commercial trip (mixing EDM with classics does not bring you up to number 1 on the billboard charts in most cases). But I guess he could do whatever he wants but for [ms] peeps he will always remain Satan. And yes, I know he is a douche but I don't give a shit if the music is good. I also nod my head sometimes to the 1500% commercially produced winner track of the German version of American Idol if I am in the mood so Oakie can't hurt me.

Re: Pioneering DJ sets sights on Hollywood

Yeah, so he's lost some of (all off?) his underground credibility, but I'd be interested in listening to the results.

Re: Pioneering DJ sets sights on Hollywood
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0642949/
This just reminded me of the shout out he gets in "Rules of Attraction":lol: during the awesome sequence where Victor recounts his European vacation to friends.

"Kip Pardue was required to stay in character as Victor Ward from the flight to Europe to the flight back to America, and gave an interview to the British newspaper the Guardian on the condition that he do it in character as Victor. While there was a rough itinerary for the shoot, almost everything filmed was serendipitous, and most "actors" were real-life people that Pardue encountered in character as Victor, including Paul Oakenfold"

Ever the voice of reason when it comes to trance

I remember those fairytale sessions, didn't Nick Warren do one with Alice in Wonderland too, or was it solely Oakenfold?

I realize Oakie has gone the way of trash these days but if you diss him after discovering "better" stuff, I'm curious as to how you got into progressive house. Was it during the melodic era, or the dark era or the more recently electrocrap era? Was it straight from Tiesto / Oakie - trance to Digweed - prog? Did you catch the tail end of Oakie's "credible" career?

Oakie was the gateway to prog for me, his Fluoro was the first mixed compilation I bought and right after, I picked up Digweed's Jackpot and JDJ compilation. This was before I knew the music as prog, I was still looking for a term to describe the music so I could find more. The nearest description was epic or dream house which led me to Blue Amazon and WOW but I digress.

Oakie = Prog = Digweed. When I first heard Oakie and Digweed, they were playing similar styles of music--neither was the better of the other. It's not like, I discovered Digweed and consequently Oakie sounded shit.

I'm not even talking about "what Oakie's done for dance music" but curious as to how you guys decided Oakie sucked and Digweed is better. Because of where they are right now with their music and career?

Oakie did rock.
