Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

If you don't have kids, I'd say go for it. I know 99% of dogs wouldn't hurt a child, but there is always that 1%.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

I LOVE DOGS AS SOME OF U MAY KNOW... Get one mate, and make sure u take some puppy pics ;).. I have (or should i say my family has) 2 dogs. The first one is a lab cross kelpi and its balck and she is a girl, the second is a golden Lab.. They are so much fun.. And the best part is when u have had a shit and i mean SHIT day at work and u come home they always welcome u back. Also if u do get angry at them ( I do sometimes when they are naughty) and after all the yelling and screaming they love u just as much as when u did not yell before.. Go for it.. I am starting to wonder if they are better than women sometimes

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

 It's funny you should mention that johns.

I currently have a < 3 year old collie. Her mother was an Australian champion collie. She cost us a fortune, but she is an amazing creature and there's nothing I love more than coming home from work and playing with her in the yard for a few hours. This dog is my best mate in the world.

She follows me around everywhere, and even gets jealous when I have female friends around her.

As for this comment, that's a stupid thing to say. Bring your dog up normally and it is absolutely no risk to your children. Your children will be better off with a dog around.

Go for it matey. I've had 3 collies in my lifetime and a cross maltese terrior/shih tzu. It's never a dull moment.

You're an ass for saying that's stupid. Why is that stupid? Every single dog brain out there is wired totally correct? We all know certain people who are more innately aggressive than others, so why can't these be true with dogs as well? We have all heard about shizophrenia or other brain disorders that have nothing to do with how you were raised, why can't these same diseases affect dogs? (http://www.floridapetpages.com/articles/SchizophreniaInPets.html)

I'm just saying...if I had an infant...and my dog were to have some disorder that would randomly show up one day, I would want that dog to be one that had a reputation for "niceness" than "agressiveness".

And especially when you have a young dog! The dogs intentions could be nothing but great, but sometimes when dogs, espeically younger ones, get all excited and wound up, they do crazy shit they don't necessarily mean to. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs as well, but not bothering to consider these things when choosing a pet is whats stupid.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

one of my old college roommates had a doberman and it was absolutety the sweetest dog...to me that is, cause I always treated the dog nicely and didn't get too crazy with him...as for my roommate he had a terrible habit of yelling and hitting the dog and that just didn't go down very well with the dog. So just be careful how you treat the dog (or any dog for that matter) and if done right you rarely if ever have a problem.

As for the comments about aggressive dogs, most if not all that actually cause bodily harm tend to be those that are trained to fight or have owners that don't properly take care of their dogs.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

^^+1

You treat a dog right and raise it in a positive environment and the dog will be great dog. Make sure you socialize them early with other dogs/animals.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

dobermans are GREAT family dogs, imo! i grew up with 2 males. very protective of their "pack", so that's the only thing you might have to look out for. not saying aggressive or anything like that. they're very playful, energetic, intelligent, and loving dogs. i love em, and will be getting one when i have the time to invest in raising it properly .8)

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

Thanks for the comments guys , the only thing that I don't know if I will be able to do is take it to the vet to cut the tail and bits of ears to make it look beautiful , I don't know if I will be able todo that.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

General concensus is that if you raise the dog right, then the doberman is unlikely to attack anyone. I agree this is by far the biggest factor. That said, my personal opinion is that people are in fullest denial when they claim that a pit bull, rot, or doberman has no more aggressiveness or fighting instincts hard wired into it than, say, a miniature sheep dog. There is a reason why the former has a famed reputation as a very reliable guard and attack dog and the latter does not.

But yeah, raise it right and you should be ok.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

My mom's cousin had a Doberman....she lives out in the country in Florida somewhere (I haven't been there to visit since I was 12, so I don't really remember exactly where) and since they are in the country they get a lot of ass holes who ditch their dogs and drive off ( she has/had 4 dogs total that were all strays)...I will never understand in a million years how someone could do something like that....so sad :*

Anyways....the Doberman, named Ladybird was the sweetest thing....she was always so happy despite what she had gone through. She loved swimming in the pool and playing catch....she would play all day if someone could keep up to her.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

Dogs are so dependant on the owner. "pet me pet me pet me" "give me attention" "I have to poop" etc... ffs.

cats > dogs

It's illegal over here now, thank goodness. Why you should your dog suffer for some else's idea of beauty!!! I'm the biggest sucker for dogs you'll ever know, but no child should ever be left alone with a dog. There are always unforseen things that can scare the dog and it may not react in a good way.

Unfortunately dog behavior can be genetic, so some breeds are definitely prone to be more aggressive, and you will not know until the dog is put in a stressful position. The only dobermans I've ever known I loved, and they were magnificent animals. But, two of them were certainly capable of aggressive behavior. One, as she got older became deaf and bit my boyfriends niece on the face when the child surprised her. The other nearly ripped a guys hand off when he put it in the car. This was in a service station and the guy put his hand in to be paid.

As I said I love dogs but it really pays to look into the type of dog which will best suit your lifestyle.

Btw We just had a women who was killed by her own dogs, mixed breeds.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

as a vet to be, i have to agree, don't leave a kid alone with a dog. a part of behaviior testing of dogs is to have this wack 3 1/2 feet doll walk up to the dog. for some reason, small people aren't always understoof by dogs. to dogs, they aren't full sized people, they walk funny, have random jerky movements that can be threatening, etc. but that said, dobies are the CUTEST! and wasn't there some study that said 90 % of dogs are naturally friendly lovable things whereas it's like 33% or soemthing for humans who are naturally friendly? Though dobies were bred to be guarddogs...and x-nay on the tail docking and ear cropping. it's still done here in the U.S, but why? enjoy your new doggie! as for the cat comment..i have 2 cats, and they follow me around and ask to be petted just like dogs do, except they are small enough to lay on the desk and get in the way when i study. they also sit on command for food...and one fetches...

dogs are great tho and true friends but cats are independent and that suits me the most

But everything you've said there directly applies word for word to humans too. So by your logic you shouldn't have a second child as it could be a potential harm to the first one. So you shouldn't have the second child as it could pose as a potential risk to the first child.

Re: Wanting to get a Doberman

Errr, There is a major difference!!! It's called communication !! We can talk to our children and tell them what is right and wrong and why, trying explaining that to a dog who has just been molested!! Babies usually don't bite !!
