so....

yesterday, at the dunkin donouts across the street from my office here in muttontown, there were cops and FBI agents all over and newsvans...

turns out today, in the paper, a rich couple who live down the street made the mistake of letting one of their slaves escape.

these people kept two indonesian women as slaves in their home for over 5 years, making them do the dirty work, list of offenses outside of kidnapping and imprisonment...

scalding with hot water, making them run up and down stairs 150 times, hitting them with rolling pins, using a paring knife on thier ears, force feeding one of them 25 hotchile peppers, forcing them to take cold showers, and only allowing them 3 hours of sleep a day, on a 3 foot by 6 foot flat floor mat.

dude... wtf. the couple is originally from india and indonesia, and owned a perfume company who sold to foreign countries. currently being held in nassau county prison as a flight risk.

see nydailynews.com or newsday.com or nytimes.

the one woman who escaped was wearing a bath towel and a pair of nursing pants. and the dunkin donuts employees found her and hid her in their storroom until the cops arrrived.

These things usually happen in countries with a big gap between rich and poor (and the absence of a broad middle class), so I can imagine the outrage you must feel when you notice that it's also happening just around the corner...

The more I read shit like that, the less I believe in a "free" society built on the goodness of people and mutual respect. Man might be the most developed mamal to wander this planet, but in the mean time, when push comes to shove we're worse than hyenas. I'm gonna sound like a senior citizen, but what we need is less individualism and consumption and more discipline and social structure (family life).

Can't agree more...sometimes I feel like I'm one of the few individualists that still knows to take care of other people, or at least minds them. And indeed in big income gap countries you get this sort of thing, strange as it may seem. Have seen rich Ghanaians scold poor ones in public for the most futile of reasons, I've rarely been so surprised and angry at the same time.
