More then 24 hours after the deadly accident on Macedonian roads, Gumball 3000 finally announced the cancellation of this years rally. After the fatal accident on Macedonian roads yesterday afternoon Gumball 3000 tried to keep it quiet as much as possible, they kept the families of Marga and Vladimir, locals, fans, drivers and sponsors completely in the dark, it took massive negative publicity in the worldwide media for them to realise the coverup failed and there was nothing else left then to cancel the rally. This totally ignorant behavior caused a lot of disbelieve and anger among the same families, locals, fans, drivers and sponsors resulting in a big anti-Gumball campaign. Sponsors took their websites down and removed all affiliation with Gumball 3000, locals expressed their anger in our comments and mailbox, fans discussed the events on virtually every forum and message board out there and drivers announced their immediate withdrawl. They had 9 years to prepare a scenario in case something like this happened, and they were well aware of the fact that it could. However their latest two press releases show they didn?t prepare and show that to Gumball 3000 it?s more important to cover their own ass then to tell the truth. Today Gumball 3000 also spoiled it for other rally events that run with the best intentions. We like to stress that we still support the other events on this site and their organisers, it shows that a good organization that takes responsibility and does all it can to ensure safety of participants and bystanders is absolutely crucial to organize a succesful event. Our Gumball 3000 coverage ends here?
http://www.gtspirit.com/2007/05/03/gumball-3000-finally-cancelled/

Shite, they were gonna pass through Belgium today...

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash

did a patron die? i mean, its a rally, wasnt someone making sure ppl werent on the track. even i know when i go to vermont for the US ralllies, to stay by trees and about 30 feet off track as to be able to get safe.

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash

Juist got an update from Erzina. A UK Porsche slammed into a VW Golf on the highway near Struga at 200 km/h (125 mph). The driver of the Porsche wasn't injured, the driver of the Golf is dead and his wife is in a critical condition.

-edit- The woman died as well today and some locals were injured as well.

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash
i guess something like this was going to happen eventually
True, but the reaction of Max Cooper is unacceptable: first the organisation tried to cover it up (24hrs after the crash still no press release from Gumball) and then Cooper tries to blame it on the couple in the Golf. What a douche

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash

bad publicity m8, its known the world over as quite a safe and law abiding event ( ) so news like this is bad for the whole image and they are always insistant that no laws are broken

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash

this does not suprise me, after looking at the videos on youtube of this years rally and seeing the lowest caliber of drivers EVER in the gumball...this doesn't suprise me. Max really needs to test these people and their driving skills out before letting them into the rally.

Just like Hammond said in Top Gear..."A mans driving abilities do not grow with his bank account."

Another update: the driver of the Porsche has tried to escape from Macedonia with a private jet. He's put under custody now. I hope that piece of shit will rot away in jail.

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash
For those who don't follow the rich-people-road-rallying scene, we wouldn't necessarily expect you to know that this year's Gumball 3000 is headed from London to Istanbul and back, nor that the rally's routed through Albania. Interestingly enough, the Albanian inclusion in the rally came at the request of none other than the United Nations. What's more, Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha says he's "delighted" that the cadre of hoons in hyper-expensive iron will be storming his country.
I bet they're not thrilled about it now
rich people killing themselfs, hilarious
Dude, did you even read any of this? The only ones killed were an elderly local couple. The Porsche driver didn't have a scratch.

I think Gumball should be outlawed in Europe. Period.

Did you hear that when they got to Germany, they were escorted out of the country.

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash

Sad to see the rally come to an end as I love watching the Gumball, but I would have been shocked if it had continued. I am still in shock and how they just hit them and ran off...

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash

can't believe it took nine years for this to happen. pretty much guarantee that this is the end...they'll never be allowed to even attempt it again...every single one of the cars would be impounded on the spot and the drivers arrested.

its for the best, while its seems a very 'cool' thing to do...its also a really stupid idea to be driving 250km/h on public roads other than the autobahn.

Re: Gumball 3000 ends after fatal crash

I'd like to see it the way it was originally in the 70's...it was a total illegal race, not a rally, and nothing was sanctioned...so technically it didn't happen.

Pretty much just like the Cannonball Run...just run by different people.
